Long-term outcomes and life-impacts of necrotizing enterocolitis: a survey of survivors and parents.
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe gastrointestinal condition predominantly afflicting preterm infants. Despite its association with unfavorable outcomes within the first two years of life, there is a scarcity of research examining the long-term consequences and life quality in children beyond this age. The purpose of the study was to carry out a survey to assess the enduring repercussions of NEC on physical and psychological well-being, social interactions, and overall life satisfaction as reported by adult survivors and parents of children who overcame NEC. The study found that both survivors and parents of children who have endured NEC encounter persistent challenges affecting their physical and emotional health, social encounters, and overall life contentment.

Trends in regionalization of emergency care for common pediatric conditions.
This study examined trends in regionalization of emergency care for common pediatric conditions. The authors sought to determine how the likelihood of definitive care has changed for 3 common conditions: asthma, croup, and gastroenteritis. They used the National Emergency Department Sample Database to study children from 2008 to 2016 who presented to emergency departments with those primary diagnoses, excluding critically ill patients. Researchers conducted analyses by stratification of annual emergency department pediatric volume categorized by quartiles. Referral rates increased for all conditions in all volume quartiles, with referral rates greatest in the lowest pediatric volume quartile.

Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis in children treated at US children's hospitals.
The incidence of and risk factors for Hirschsprung's-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) following pull-through have been limited to single institutions studies. In this retrospective cohort study, the investigators characterized the incidence of, risk factors for, and consequences of post-operative HAEC. The investigators concluded that HAEC following pull-through occurs in a large proportion of infants with HD and predicts reoperation. They suggest that multicenter studies are needed to develop prediction models and treatment protocols for HAEC.

Transnasal endoscopy in unsedated children with eosinophilic esophagitis using virtual reality video goggles.
Evaluation and treatment of children with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) requires serial endoscopic, visual, and histologic assessment by sedated esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). Unsedated transnasal endoscopy (TNE) was reported to be successful in a pilot study of children. In this study, the investigators evaluated video goggle and virtual reality-based unsedated TNE in children with EoE, collecting data on rates of completion, adverse events, and adequacy of visual and histologic findings.

Knowledge of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome among general pediatricians.
In this study, investigators examined knowledge of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome among general pediatricians. They created a 32-question survey, collecting information regarding participants’ experience with FPIES and knowledge of FPIES diagnosis and management. Investigators found that many pediatricians had a basic but incomplete understanding of FPIES diagnosis and initial management.

Effectiveness of fundoplication or gastrojejunal feeding in children with neurologic impairment.
Gastroesophageal reflux (GER), aspiration, and secondary complications lead to morbidity and mortality in children with neurologic impairment (NI), dysphagia, and gastrostomy feeding. Fundoplication and gastrojejunal (GJ) feeding can reduce risk. A comparison of GJ to fundoplication using first-year postprocedure reflux-related hospitalization (RRH) rates found that in children with NI, GER, and dysphagia,:fundoplication and GJ feeding have similar RRH outcomes.

Decline in emergency department visits for acute gastroenteritis among children in 10 US states after implementation of rotavirus vaccination, 2003-2013.
The researchers compared the rates of gastroenteritis- and rotavirus-coded ED visits among children <5 years of age in pre-rotavirus vaccine (2003 to 2006) with those in postvaccine (2008-2013) years; 2007 was excluded as a transition year They concluded that. ED visits for gastroenteritis in US children have declined since the introduction of rotavirus vaccine.

Seasonality and pediatric inflammatory bowel disease.
The researchers sought to determine whether disease activity in pediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with a seasonal pattern. Studying 1325 patients with Crohn disease and 587 patients with ulcerative colitis, their findings do not support any strong associations between season of the year and disease activity in pediatric IBD.
