African American patient-provider communication about glaucoma vision quality-of-life.
A study was conducted to examine African American patient-provider communication about glaucoma-related quality-of-life. Patients completed a vision quality-of-life assessment to examine patient-provider characteristics, patient demographics, and socio-demographics. The study determined that patients with worse literacy, more severe glaucoma, or depression are likely to have a lower vision quality-of-life.

Do African American patients with glaucoma ask their eye providers the questions they have?
The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to test the effectiveness of a pre-visit video/glaucoma question prompt-list to increase question-asking during medical visits. Participants were adult African American patients with glaucoma and a history of non-adherence to glaucoma medications, The questions that patients checked on the question prompt list were described, and how often the same checked questions were asked during medical visits noted. The findings indicated that although patients with glaucoma had questions about glaucoma and their medications, few asked all their questions during visits. The researchers concluded that future research should focus on ways to improve question asking using a question prompt list.

Perceptions of patient-provider communication across the six largest Asian subgroups in the USA.
Investigators sought to estimate racial/ethnic differences in perceptions of provider communication among the six largest Asian subgroups. Using MEPS data, they found that negative views of provider communication are not pervasive among all Asians but, rather, primarily reflect the perceptions of Chinese and, possibly, Vietnamese patients. They recommended that researchers, policymakers, health plan executives, and others who produce or use data on patients' experiences with health care avoid categorizing all Asians into a single group.

Barriers and facilitators to dissemination and adoption of precision medicine among Hispanics/Latinos.
This study examined barriers to dissemination and adoption of precision medicine among the Hispanic/Latino population. Six focus groups and a demographic survey in English and Spanish was developed. Forty-one self-identified Hispanics/Latinos from diverse countries participated in the study. The participants had never heard of precision medicine and barriers to adoption and dissemination included lack of health insurance, distrust of government, immigration status, financial burden, limited English proficiency, low literacy levels, lack of information and lack of transportation. Facilitators included family support, information provided in Spanish, use of plain language and graphics and trust in healthcare providers and institutions. The authors recommend culturally- and linguistically-tailored, low-literacy educational material about precision medicine in English and Spanish.

Conversations between Latina mothers and their child's mental health provider: An observational study of shared decision-making regarding pediatric patient mental health needs.
The authors evaluated shared decision-making (SDM) and delineated SDM processes in audio-recorded conversations between language-congruent Spanish-/English-speaking clinicians and parents of pediatric mental health patients. They found that their present sample performed on par with other populations studied to date, and that it expanded the evaluation of observed SDM to include Latino patients and new clinician populations. The practical implications of their findings is that use of the Observer OPTION(5) instrument highlights that eliciting and integrating parent/patient preferences is a skill that requires attention when delivering culturally competent interventions.

Preferences for communicating about breast cancer screening among racially/ethnically diverse older women.
The purpose of this study was to examine preferences for communicating about screening mammography among racially/ethnically diverse older women. Through in-depth interviews, findings revealed that older women desire information about the benefits and harms of screening mammography and would prefer to learn this information through discussions with healthcare providers and multiple other formats. Results were consistent regardless of participants' age, race/ethnicity, or education.

Perspectives of English, Chinese, and Spanish-speaking safety-net patients on clinician computer use: qualitative analysis.
The goal of this study was to understand how safety-net patients, including those with limited English proficiency, view clinician electronic health record (EHR) use. Through focus groups in English, Spanish, and Cantonese, results showed that linguistically diverse patients accepted the value of EHR use during outpatient visits but desired more eye contact, verbal warnings before EHR use, and screen-sharing. Support for clinicians in completing EHR-related tasks during the visit using patient-centered strategies for all patients is recommended.

Latino parents' perceptions of pediatric weight counseling terms.
This study analyzed what would the least offensive terms to use with Latino parents when clinicians talk to them about their childrens’ weight, particularly for counseling obese youth. Latino parents across demographic groups were surveyed in English or Spanish and rated the most and least offensive terms to describe excess weight using a 5-point scale. The least offensive term was “demasiado peso para su salud”, or “too much weight for his/her health” in English. The most offensive was “gordo” or “muy gordo” meaning chubby or fat. Terminology makes a difference in how the parents will respond to weight counseling and follow-up.

Racial disparities in family-provider interactions for pediatric asthma care.
The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in family-provider interactions for pediatric asthma, based on race/ethnicity and using parent surveys of asthmatic children within the Population-Based Effectiveness in Asthma and Lung Diseases Network. 647 parents provided survey response data and self-reported race/ethnicity of the child. The outcomes studied were responses to questions about family-provider interactions in the previous 12 months including number of visits with asthma provider, number of times provider reviewed asthma medications with patient/family, review of written asthma treatment plans, and preferences about asthma care decisionmaking. The study concludes that black children with asthma have fewer visits with their providers than white children and are less likely to have a written asthma treatment plan. The authors suggest that asthma providers could focus on improving these specific family-provider interactions.

Establishing effective health care partnerships with sexual and gender minority patients: recommendations for obstetrician gynecologists.
Sexual and gender minority patients have historically experienced high rates of inappropriate and low-quality care, disrespect, and discrimination in health care settings, as well as significant health disparities. This article documented multiple suggestions and resources that health care teams can use to improve the health and health care of their sexual and gender minority patients.

An exploratory analysis of patient-provider language-concordant home health care visit patterns.
In a 2-year period, this study showed that among the 238,513 visits with 18,132 limited English proficiency patients, only 20 percent of visits were language concordant. The study suggests that home health care services may not be meeting the demand for language services, but more research is needed to determine the right “dose” of bilingual home care visits to optimize home care outcomes and establish a standard for care.

The association between parent-reported provider communication quality and child obesity status: variation by parent obesity and child race/ethnicity.
This study examined the association between healthcare provider communication quality and child obesity status, and the role of parent obesity and child race/ethnicity regarding this association. It found that parents of obese children experienced better communication if parents were non-obese or children were non-Hispanic Black or Asian.

"I want to keep the personal relationship with my doctor": Understanding barriers to portal use among African Americans and Latinos.
The investigators sought to understand specific barriers to portal use among African American and Latino patients at Kaiser Permanente, which has had a portal in place for over a decade. Their findings suggest that uniform adoption of portal use across diverse patient groups requires more usable, more personalized websites, which may be particularly important for reducing health care disparities.

Shared decision making among clinicians and Asian American and Pacific Islander sexual and gender minorities: an intersectional approach to address a critical care gap.
The authors illustrated how issues at the intersection of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) and sexual and gender minorities (SGM) identities affect shared decision making processes and health outcomes. They discussed experiences of AAPI SGM that are affected by AAPI heterogeneity, SGM stigma, multiple minority group identities, and sources of discrimination.

Use of decision aids with minority patients: a systematic review.
The authors conducted a systematic review to characterize the application and effectiveness of decision aids (DA) in racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender minorities. ical decisions. They concluded that DAs have been effective in improving patient-doctor communication and decision quality outcomes in minority populations and could help address health disparities. However, the existing literature is almost non-existent for sexual and gender minorities.

Elucidating patient-perceived role in "decision-making" among African Americans receiving lung cancer care through a county safety-net system.
The researchers explored patient-perceived role in "decision-making" related to active treatment and palliation among African Americans receiving lung cancer care through a county safety-net system. They found that caregivers and patients expressed a concurrent lack of understanding of their prognosis and outcomes of treatment. Dyads did not discuss their lung cancer experience in terms of decision-making; rather, most articulated their role as following physician guidance.

Patient-health care professional gender or race/ethnicity concordance and its association with weight-related advice in the United States.
This study examined association between adult patients' and health care providers' (HCPs) gender or race/ethnicity concordance and patients' reported receiving weight-related advice from HCP's in USA. It found that patient/HCP gender or race/ethnicity concordance was not positively associated with HCPs providing weight-related advice. Patients with female HCPs or with racial/ethnic discordant HCPs (especially black or Asian HCPs) were more likely to receive advice.

Primary spoken language and neuraxial labor analgesia use among Hispanic Medicaid recipients.
The researchers investigated whether there is a disparity in anticipated or actual use of neuraxial labor analgesia among Hispanic women based on primary language (English versus Spanish). A language-based disparity was found in neuraxial labor analgesia use. It is possible that there are communication barriers in knowledge or understanding of analgesic options.

Experiences of Latinos with limited English proficiency with patient registration systems and their interactions with clinic front office staff: an exploratory study to inform community-based translational research in North Carolina.
This study explored Latino patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) experiences with, and expectations for, interactions with patient registration systems and front office staff. It found that Latino patients in North Carolina experienced health services barriers unique to their LEP background. Participants identified ways in which the lack of cultural and linguistic competence of front office staff negatively affect their experiences seeking health services.

Patient-reported communication quality and perceived discrimination in maternity care.
The researchers assessed racial/ethnic disparities in patient-reported communication problems and perceived discrimination in maternity care among women nationally and measured racial/ethnic variation in the correlates of these outcomes. They found that over 40 percent of women reported communication problems in prenatal care, and 24 percent perceived discrimination during their hospitalization for birth.

Racial/Ethnic disparities in patient experience with communication in hospitals: real differences or measurement errors?
This study examined assumptions about the degree of commonality across racial/ethnic groups in their perceptions and investigated the validity of racial/ethnic differences in communication quality. Its results provide strongest support for racial/ethnic comparisons on communication with nurses and doctors, and reason to caution against comparisons on communication about medicines due to significant differences in model parameters across groups.

Information and communication needs of Chinese American breast cancer patients: perspectives on survivorship care planning.
The researchers conducted a qualitative study to examine the information and communication needs as well as survivorship care preferences of Chinese American breast cancer survivors. The main themes identified through analysis of interview transcripts were: the need for evidence-based and culturally and linguistically appropriate health information; the role of language or communication barriers and culture in accessing care and communicating with providers; and preferences for care plan elements and format.

Provider-patient communication about adherence to anti-retroviral regimens differs by patient race and ethnicity.
This study directly examined differences in provider–patient communication about anti-retroviral therapy (ART) adherence by patient race or ethnicity. It found more ART adherence dialogue with Black and Hispanic patients than with White patients, even after controlling for indications, and a tendency for adherence dialogue to be more directive in Hispanics than in Whites.
