Comparing breast and abdominal subspecialists' follow-up recommendations for incidental liver lesions on breast MRI.
This study compared breast and abdominal subspecialists’ follow-up recommendations following discovery of incidental liver lesions (ILLs) after breast MRI. When breast subspecialists recommended no follow-up abdominal subspecialists agreed with them in 29 out of 30 cases examined, but disagreed with 28 or 30 breast subspecialists’ follow-up recommendations. When breast imagers reported no ILLs, there was 93% agreement with abdominal subspecialists.

Identifying tests related to breast cancer care in claims data.
The goal of this study was to develop a method for calculating rates of testing for breast cancer recurrence in patients who have already undergone initial treatment for breast cancer. Rates were calculated from a cohort of Medicare breast cancer patients and an age-matched noncancer cohort. They calculated testing rates in the breast cancer cohort above the background rate in the noncancer population. There were similar estimates of testing prevalence and frequency in the two groups, with exception of prevalence of computed tomography (CT).

Imaging activity possibly signalling missed diagnostic opportunities in bladder and kidney cancer: a longitudinal data-linkage study using primary care electronic health records.
Sub-optimal use or interpretation of imaging investigations prior to diagnosis of certain cancers may be associated with less timely diagnosis, but pre-diagnostic imaging activity for urological cancer is unknown. In this study, the investigators analysed linked data derived from primary and secondary care records and cancer registration to evaluate the use of clinically relevant imaging tests pre-diagnosis, in patients with bladder and kidney cancer diagnosed in 2012-15 in England.

Factors associated with optimal follow-up in women with BI-RADS 3 breast findings.
Investigators assessed the rate of and the factors associated with optimal follow-up in patients with BI-RADS 3 breast findings. They found that follow-up of BI-RADS 3 breast imaging findings is optimal in only 74% of women. They recommended further interventions to promote follow-up targeting younger, unmarried women, those with Hispanic ethnicity, and women without history of breast cancer and without insurance coverage.

Assessment of radiologist performance in breast cancer screening using digital breast tomosynthesis vs digital mammography.
Many US radiologists have screening mammography recall rates above the expert-recommended threshold of 12%. The influence of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) on the distribution of radiologist recall rates is uncertain. The objective of this study was to evaluate radiologists' recall and cancer detection rates before and after beginning interpretation of DBT examinations.

Is it time for synoptic reporting in melanoma nodal surveillance ultrasonography?
Previous qualitative research has identified a potential gap between surgeons’ and radiologists’ awareness of Second Multicenter Selective Lymphadenectomy Trial (MSLT-II) criteria. The purpose of this study was to explore how these criteria have been adopted and reported outside of clinical trial settings or utilized by surgical teams when interpreting ultrasound results. The study found that of the 269 nodal ultrasounds performed in 78 patients, 81.0% reported normal findings versus 19% abnormal findings. Researchers indicated that only 15% of normal ultrasounds had one or more MSLT-II criteria reported versus 88.9% abnormal ultrasounds. While 37% of abnormal ultrasounds had only one MSLT-II criterion reported, 27.8% had two criteria and 24.1% had three criteria. Of the eight abnormal ultrasounds with biopsy recommendation, 75% had two or more MSLT-II criteria reported. Clinically actionable recommendations were provided in 94.9% of normal ultrasounds compared with 64.8% of abnormal ultrasounds.

Characterising potential bone scan overuse amongst men treated with radical prostatectomy.
The authors characterized bone scan use after radical prostatectomy (RP) using data from a large, national integrated delivery system. They found a substantial rate of bone scan utilization after RP. The majority were performed for prostate-specific antigen levels in which the likelihood of a positive test was low. They recommended more judicious use of imaging in the post-RP setting.

Digital breast tomosynthesis: radiologist learning curve.
This study examined if detect rates and lower recall rates occurred with the adoption of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) than for traditional breast mammography. Performance was compared before and after DBT adoption using data from the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium cohort. There was a small improvement in recall rates, with more improvement in women with nondense breasts. Cancer detection rates were similar.

Trends in clinical breast density assessment from the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium.
Changes to mammography practice, including revised Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) density classification guidelines and implementation of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), may impact clinical breast density assessment. In this study, the authors investigated temporal trends in clinical breast density assessment among 2 990 291 digital mammography (DM) screens and 221 063 DBT screens interpreted by 722 radiologists from 144 facilities in the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium.

Upper endoscopy up to 3 years prior to a diagnosis of gastric cancer is associated with lower stage of disease in a USA multiethnic urban population, a retrospective study.
This study focused on the feasibility of earlier diagnosis of non-cardia gastic cancer (NCGC) for high-risk populations in the US who include multiracial and ethnic populations. A retrospective study was conducted with patients who were positively identified endoscopically with NCGC at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. The primary outcome was an increased frequency of patients diagnosed with stage 0-Ia (38%) as opposed to stage Ib-III (34%) and stage IV (20.3%). For patients with stage 0-Ia if they had a prior negative endoscopy there was a 94% higher likelihood of the NCGC being in a curable stage.

Population-based assessment of the association between magnetic resonance imaging background parenchymal enhancement and future primary breast cancer risk.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate comparative associations of breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) and mammographic breast density with subsequent breast cancer risk. The investigators concluded that BPE was associated with future invasive breast cancer risk independent of breast density. They suggest that BPE should be considered for risk prediction models for women undergoing breast MRI.

A clinician's guide to next generation imaging in patients with advanced prostate cancer (RADAR III).
This paper reports on the convening of the Radiographic Assessments for Detection of Advanced Recurrence (RADAR III) Group to offer guidance on the use of next generation imaging to stage prostate cancer based on available data and clinical experience. The RADAR III Group recommends next generation imaging techniques in select patients in whom disease progression is suspected based on biomarker values, comorbidities and symptoms.

Patient, radiologist, and examination characteristics affecting screening mammography recall rates in a large academic practice.
This retrospective study examined patient, radiologist and examination characteristics affecting screening mammography recall rates. This study used 61,198 examinations from an academic center and two outpatient centers from October 1, 2012 to May 31, 2015. Radiologists’ risk aversion, stress from uncertainty, and malpractice concerns and cancer detection rates were derived from the survey. Their annual screening volumes, clinical experience, and concentration in breast imaging was calculated. About 9.3% of screening examinations were recalled. There was no association found with radiologists’ risk aversion, stress from uncertainty, malpractice concerns and cancer detection rates and high recall rates. The most variation was found with radiologists’ annual reading volume and experience.

This study used Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data to analyze thyroid cancer incidence in adults aged 65 years or older. Data was analyzed in the SEER-Medicare database from 2002 and 2013. Thyroid ultrasound use as initial imaging increased in all types of thyroid cancer, which increased the diagnosis of low-risk thyroid cancer. It was associated with female and comorbidities. Researchers believe that there is greater thyroid ultrasound use which results in increased diagnosis.

The effect of digital breast tomosynthesis adoption on facility-level breast cancer screening volume.
This study examined whether adoption of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) was associated with a decrease in screening mammography capacity across Breast Cancer Screening Consortium facilities. Facility characteristics and examination volume data were collected from facilities that adopted DBT from 2011 and 2014. The majority of facilities had no academic affiliation (73%), were nonprofit (80%) and were general radiology practices (66.7%). Monthly screening volumes were slightly higher after the adoption period but otherwise remained relatively stable before and after adoption of DBT.

Perceptions of overdetection of breast cancer among women 70 years of age and older in the USA: a mixed-methods analysis.
The authors explored older women's perceptions about the concept of overdetection of breast cancer and its influence on future screening intentions. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 59 English-speaking women aged 70 years or older with no prior history of breast cancer. The authors found that many older women did not understand the concept of overdetection, in addition to being suspicious of or resistant to the concept. Providing older women with descriptions of overdetection may not be sufficient to influence screening intentions.

Performance characteristics of digital vs film screen mammography in community practice.
In this study, the investigators examined performance characteristics of digital vs film screen mammography in community practice by comparing the performance characteristics of 297 629 full field digital (FFDM) and 416 791 screen film mammograms (SFM). In their study, modest gains in performance were achieved with the introduction of FFDM as a replacement for SFM, in a large health care organization.

Electronic triggers to identify delays in follow-up of mammography: harnessing the power of big data in health care.
Because of the unique clinical, logistic, and legal aspects of mammography, this study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a trigger to flag delayed follow-up on mammography. The investigators found that care delays appeared to continue despite federal laws requiring patient notification of mammographic results within 30 days. They suggest that clinical application of mammography-related triggers could help detect these delays.

Absence of an anticipated racial disparity in interval breast cancer within a large health care organization.
The researchers sought to estimate the extent of an anticipated racial disparity in interval breast cancer (IBC) within a single, large health care organization. Contrary to expectation, in patient-adjusted models, there was no IBC racial disparity. The sorting of patients by race across facilities appears to have mitigated an otherwise anticipated disparity in IBC.

Adaptive anatomical preservation optimal denoising for radiation therapy daily MRI.
An innovative method, adaptive anatomical preservation optimal denoising (AAPOD), was developed for optimal image denoising, i.e., to maximally reduce noise while preserving the tissue boundaries. The experimental results demonstrated that AAPOD was capable of reducing noise adaptively and optimally while avoiding tissue boundary losses.

Multi-institutional randomized trial testing the utility of an interactive three-dimensional contouring atlas among radiation oncology residents.
The present study reports on the efficacy and usability of a web-based contouring atlas compared with those of existing contouring resources in a randomized trial. Compared with the residents using currently available resources, the residents using eContour had improved contour agreement with both the consensus and the expert contours for the high-risk clinical target volume and greater agreement with the expert contour for the contralateral parotid gland.

Development of a fast Monte Carlo dose calculation system for online adaptive radiation therapy quality assurance.
This article describes the development of a fast Monte Carlo dose calculating system for validating online magnetic resonance imaging radiation therapy adaptive plans with both speed and accuracy. The Monte Carlo system is based on a simplified dose planning method code that incorporates a vendor-provided head model. A validated Monte Carlo code (gPENELOPE) was used to benchmark the new system.

Researchers sought to examine the impact of a false positive (FP) screening mammogram on the subsequent screening mammography behavior. They found that experiencing a FP mammogram increases the risk of late stage at diagnosis compared with prior true negative (TN) mammogram Also, women with a FP mammogram were more likely to delay their subsequent screening compared with women with a TN mammogram.
