Completion of recommended tests and referrals in telehealth vs in-person visits.
The purpose of this retrospective cohort study was to explore the prevalence of diagnostic loop closure for tests and referrals ordered at telehealth visits when compared to in-person visits and characterize related factors. The study included test and referral orders for 4,133 patients A total 27.8% of the orders were placed during a telehealth visit. The study found that of the telehealth orders, 42.6% were completed within the designated time frame vs 58.4% of those ordered during in-person visits and 57.4% of those ordered without a visit. In an adjusted analysis, when compared with patients with in persons visits, patients with telehealth visits were less likely to close the loop for all test types.

Virtual voices: examining social support exchanged through participant-generated and unmoderated content in a mobile intervention to improve HIV antiretroviral therapy adherence among GBMSM.
The goal of this study was to investigate how social support was provided and sought by gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) within a technology-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence intervention. Participants used the messaging feature in to discuss and exchange support around HIV treatment and care. The most salient HIV treatment and care issues were lab results, upcoming tests, ART adherence and side effects, regimen changes, and relationships with healthcare providers. The authors concluded that this analysis provided an opportunity to understand how participants informally interact with one another, how they seek and provide social support online, and their relevant personal issues.

Systemic barriers in receiving electronically prescribed glaucoma medications.
The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to quantify glaucoma medication treatment interruptions attributable to electronically prescribed medications and recommend interventions to reduce this barrier. The researchers reviewed Glaucoma medication refill requests received over a 6-week interval, and then contacted patient pharmacies 1 month after the request date to determine whether the medication was picked up by the patient. Patients who did not pick up the prescriptions were contacted and consented to participate in a survey to identify the barriers to getting the medications. The study found that a prior authorization requirement was significantly associated with patients not obtaining their medication, as well as insurance coverage (32.2%) and availability of the medication at the pharmacy (22.6%). The study concluded that due to the need for prior authorization, insurance coverage, and pharmacy availability, approximately one third of electronically prescribed glaucoma medications were not picked up by patients within one month of the refill request.

Exploring mHealth potential to improve kidney function: secondary analysis of a randomized trial of diabetes self-care in diverse adults.
This study examined whether REACH, a text message-delivered self-management support intervention, which focuses on medication adherence, diet, and exercise can significantly improve glycemic control in 506 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). The authors used data from the trial to explore the intervention’s effect on change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGR) at 12 months in a subsample of 271 patients. Patients with proteinuria at baseline who received REACH had less worsening of eGFR.

Technologies for medication adherence monitoring and technology assessment criteria: narrative review.
This narrative review summarizes the technical features, data capture methods, and various advantages and limitations of medication adherence monitoring technology along with proposed criteria for assessing medication adherence monitoring technologies. Technology assessment criteria were identified and organized into the following five categories: development information, technology features, adherence to data collection and management, feasibility and implementation, and acceptability and usability.

Parents' perspectives on a smartwatch intervention for children with ADHD: rapid deployment and feasibility evaluation of a pilot intervention to support distance learning during COVID-19.
This paper explores how smartwatch technology, including timing notifications, can support children with ADHD during distance learning due to COVID-19. The researchers used a Digital Health Intervention which included a smartwatch and a smartphone. Their results demonstrated that children successfully adopted the use of the smartwatch, and parents believed that the intervention was helpful, especially in supporting the development of organizational skills in their children. The authors included suggestions to help professionals teach children with ADHD to use smartwatches to improve organization and task completion, especially as it applies to supporting remote instruction.

Access to technology and preferences for an mHealth intervention to promote medication adherence in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia: approach leveraging behavior change techniques.
This study’s objectives were to examine access to mobile technology and preferences for an mHealth intervention to improve medication adherence in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Parents of children with ALL as well as adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with ALL who received maintenance chemotherapy were given a cross-sectional survey. Findings showed that parents, adolescents, and AYAs reported ubiquitous access to mobile technology and strong interest in multiple adherence-specific mHealth app features. Parents and AYAs provided valuable insight into preferred features for a multifunctional behavioral intervention to promote medication adherence in pediatric ALL.

An evaluation of the spread and scale of PatientToc™ from primary care to community pharmacy practice for the collection of patient-reported outcomes: a study protocol.
Patient-reported outcomes (PROs), measuring adherence challenges pertaining to both remembering and intention to take medication, offer a rich data source for pharmacists and prescribers to use to resolve medication non-adherence. PatientToc™ is a PROs collection software developed to facilitate collection of PROs data from low-literacy and non-English speaking patients in Los Angeles. This study evaluated the spread and scale of PatientToc™ from primary care to community pharmacies for the collection and use of PROs data pertaining to medication adherence.

Evaluation of patient willingness to adopt remote digital monitoring for diabetes management.
Investigators sought to identify the minimum effectiveness patients report they require to adopt 36 different remote digital monitoring (RDM) scenarios. Adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes living in 30 countries assessed three randomly selected scenarios from a total of 36 that described different combinations of digital monitoring tools. The investigators found that patients required greater health benefits to adopt more intrusive RDM modalities, food monitoring, and real-time feedback by a health care professional. They recommended that patient monitoring devices be designed to be minimally intrusive.

Protocol of the randomized control trial: the WiseApp trial for improving health outcomes in PLWH (WiseApp).
This paper outlines the protocol for the WiseApp randomized control trial. The WiseApp contains real-time medication monitoring linking an electronic pill bottle and fitness tracker to the app, helping persons living with HIV (PLWH) self-manage their medication adherence and improve their overall quality of life. The primary objective of the trial is to test the effect of the WiseApp's medication adherence features on antiretroviral adherence in underserved PLWH in New York City. The real-time monitoring of the WiseApp has the potential to help providers initiate interventions to help patients resume treatment before drug resistance begins.

Association of adherence to weight telemonitoring with health care use and death: a secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial.
This study examined if heart failure patients who had lower adherence to weight telemonitoring had higher hospitalization and death rates. This study was a post hoc secondary analysis of the Better Effectiveness After Transition-Heart Failure randomized clinical trial which included patients from 6 academic medical centers in California. Criteria for eligibility was if they were hospitalized for decompensated heart failure. Exclusion criteria included if they were discharged to a skilled nursing facility, were expected to improve because of a medical procedure, or did not have the cognitive or physical ability to participate. The trial compared a telemonitoring intervention with usual care for patients with heart failure after hospital discharge from October 12, 2011 to September 30, 2013. The cohort of 538 eligible participants had a mean age of 70.9, was 53.8% male and 50.7% white. Adherence got better from week to week, and they found that every increase in adherence by 1 day was associated with a 19% decrease in the rate of death the following week and an 11% decrease in the rate of hospitalization. However, weight adherence is unlikely to be a result of the telemonitoring intervention.

Development of the incharge health mobile app to improve adherence to hydroxyurea in patients with sickle cell disease: user-centered design approach.
This study looked at how use of a newly developed mobile app called InCharge Health can help sickle cell disease (SCD) patients adhere to their prescribed medication use of hydroxyurea. Four phases were used to develop the mobile app with substantial input from users and by mapping the Health Belief Model (HBM) as the framework that guided the choice for its components. More than half of the patients reported potentially low health literacy. Preferred patient app features included 7 key components: medication reminders and tracker, disease education, communication, personalization, motivation, support during pain episodes, and social support. This information was translated into features within the app.

Habit strength, medication adherence, and habit-based mobile health interventions across chronic medical conditions: systematic review.
This review’s goal was to systematically evaluate the most recent evidence for habit strength, medication adherence, and habit-based mHealth interventions across chronic medical conditions. Findings revealed that habit strength was strongly correlated with medication adherence, and stronger habit was associated with higher medication adherence rates, regardless of the theoretical model and/or guiding framework. Habit-based interventions were recommended to increase medication adherence, leveraging widely-available mobile technology tools and existing routines.

Use of the FITT framework to understand patients' experiences using a real-time medication monitoring pill bottle linked to a mobile-based HIV self-management app: a qualitative study.
This study examined the usefulness of a mobile app linked to a real-time medication monitoring pill bottle that reminds HIV patients to take their medication. Thirty-eight randomized patients living with HIV who were aged 18 and older, owned a smartphone and were mostly medication-compliant were selected. The majority were African-American, had a high school education or less, and had a median income of less than $20,000. The Fit between Individuals, Task and Technology (FITT) framework was used to determine the fit between the individuals and the technology. Hindrances to the technology included: ease of use, HIV-related stigma and disclosure of HIV status, customized alert of medication time windows, and preference for device design.

Employing a user-centered design to engage mothers in the development of a mHealth breastfeeding application.
The Mother's Milk Connection mHealth application was designed to improve breastfeeding duration and access to support. This article describes a user-centered design process to engage mothers in the development of the Mother's Milk Connection application. Stakeholder and user engagement indicated the integration of four distinct features acceptable for use as a comprehensive mHealth intervention to improve access to breastfeeding support. Further, mHealth has the potential to be a useful strategy for providing breastfeeding support, and a clinical trial regarding the efficacy of the Mother's Milk Connection application is needed.

A multi-step usability evaluation of a self-management app to support medication adherence in persons living with HIV.
The authors developed a mHealth app (WiseApp) for HIV self-management to help persons living with HIV (PLWH) self-manage their health. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usability of the WiseApp. The results of the cognitive walkthrough with both experts and end-users informed iterative refinements to the WiseApp and finalization of a mHealth app for PLWH to better self-manage their health.

Identifying prevalence and risk factors for metformin non-persistence: a retrospective cohort study using an electronic health record.
Non-persistence may be a significant barrier to the use of metformin. The objective of this study was to assess reasons for metformin non-persistence, and whether initial metformin dosing or use of extended release (ER) formulations affect persistence to metformin therapy. The investigators concluded that their data supported the routine prescribing of low starting doses of metformin as a tool to improve persistence.

Feasibility and acceptability of real-time antiretroviral adherence monitoring among depressed women living with HIV in the deep south of the US.
The purpose of this study was to present feasibility and acceptability data on the use of an electronic adherence monitor (EAM) among African American women in remote areas of the Southeastern United States with HIV and co-occurring depression. EAM and self-reported antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence was monitored among 25 participants recruited at four HIV clinics in Alabama. Intra-class correlation showed a low degree of concordance between EAM and self-reported adherence. 83% of data collected via EAM was transmitted in real-time; the remainder was delayed though technological failures or was lost entirely. The authors conclude that EAM monitoring is feasible in a rural US setting but that technological difficulties may impede the device's usefulness for just-in-time adherence interventions.

Supporting collaborative health tracking in the hospital: patients' perspectives.
Through interviews and design probes, the authors of this study investigated hospitalized patients' health data tracking activity and analyzed their results using the stage-based personal informatics model. Their findings uncovered new directions for HCI research and highlighted ways to support patients in tracking their care and improving patient safety.

Language-concordant automated telephone queries to assess medication adherence in a diverse population: a cross-sectional analysis of convergent validity with pharmacy claims.
In a multilingual urban safety net population, the researchers examined the validity of assessing adherence using automated telephone self-management (ATSM) queries, when compared with non-adherence using continuous medication gap (CMG) on pharmacy claims. They concluded that language-concordant ATSM demonstrated modest potential for assessing adherence.

Daily and seasonal influences on dietary self-monitoring using a smartphone application.
Researchers examined within-person variation in dietary self-monitoring during a 6-month technology-supported weight loss trial as a function of time-varying factors including time in the study, day of the week, and month of the year. They found that participants recorded less as time in the study progressed. Fewer foods were reported on the weekends compared with weekdays. More foods were self-monitored in January compared with October; however, a seasonal effect was not observed.

The feasibility of text reminders to improve medication adherence in adolescents with asthma.
The goal of this study was to assess the impact of MyMediHealth (MMH) - a website and a short messaging service (SMS)-based reminder system - on medication adherence and perceived self-efficacy in adolescents with asthma. The investigators found that MMH was associated with improved medication adherence, perceived quality of life, and self-efficacy.

The impact of tailored text messages on health beliefs and medication adherence in adults with diabetes: a randomized pilot study.
The purpose of this pilot study was to test the effectiveness of tailored text messages focusing on improving medication adherence and health beliefs in adults with diabetes. It found that declines in medication adherence were observed in both groups over time but no significant differences were observed between groups or from baseline to the end of the active study period.

Electronic medication packaging devices and medication adherence: a systematic review.
The authors conducted a systematic review of studies testing the effectiveness of electronic medication packaging (EMP) devices. From the 37 studies included in the review, they determined that although many varieties of EMP devices exist, data supporting their use are limited, with variability in the quality of studies testing EMP devices.
