Delays in recognition of the need for telephone-assisted CPR due to caller descriptions of chief complaint.
The objective of this study was to test if caller descriptions of chief complaint delays emergency medical dispatchers' (EMDs) recognition of the need for telephone-assisted CPR (T-CPR). The investigators conducted an analysis of N = 433 cardiac arrest calls from six large call centers in the United States. They concluded that caller chief complaint description affected the time to recognition of the need for T-CPR.

Incidence of speech recognition errors in the emergency department.
The study’s aim was to determine the incidence and types of speech recognition (SR) errors introduced by computerized SR technology in the emergency department (ED). It found that SR errors occur commonly with annunciation errors being the most frequent. Error rates were comparable if not lower than previous studies. Fifteen percent of errors were deemed critical, potentially leading to miscommunication that could affect patient care.

Emergency physicians' views of direct notification of laboratory and radiology results to patients using the Internet: a multisite survey.
The authors explored emergency physicians' current practices of test result notification and attitudes to direct patient notification of clinically significant abnormal and normal test results. They found that more than half of the emergency physicians were uncomfortable with patients receiving direct notification of normal or abnormal test results. Main concerns were that patients could be anxious, confused, and lacking in the necessary expertise to interpret their results.

Developing and evaluating the success of a family activated medical emergency team: a quality improvement report.
The researchers aimed to develop a reliable process for family-activated medical emergency teams (METs) and to evaluate its effect on MET call rate and subsequent transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU). They found that children with family-activated METs were transferred to the ICU less commonly than those with clinician MET calls. Families, like clinicians, most commonly called MET for concerns of clinical deterioration; however, families also identified lack of response from clinicians and a dismissive interaction between team and family.

Safety of rural nursing home-to-emergency department transfers: Improving communication and patient information sharing across settings.
This paper reports on the evaluation of a demonstration in 10 rural communities to improve the safety of nursing facility (NF) transfers to hospital emergency departments by forming interprofessional teams of hospital, emergency medical service, and NF staff to develop and implement tools and protocols for standardizing critical interfacility communication pathways and information sharing. Study findings showed significant improvement in key areas, including infection status and baseline mental functioning. Accurate and consistent information sharing of advance directives and medication lists remains a challenge.

Information requirements for health information exchange supported communication between emergency departments and poison control centers.
The researchers analyzed audio recordings of current telephone-based communications between emergency departments (EDs) and poison control centers (PCCs) in order to describe the information requirements for health information exchange between PCCs and EDs. Their goal was to identify a focused subset of available health information, most relevant to emergency treatment of poison exposure, in order to support generalizable process re-design.
