Plenary Presentations

June 14: Trusting the Power of the Team: One CEO’s Journey to Embracing TeamSTEPPS

Akram Boutros, M.D. Speaker: Akram Boutros, M.D., FACHE

"It’s too expensive. Who has time for it? We tried some other program a few years back and it didn’t help." The list of reasons why not to invest in TeamSTEPPS is long. This plenary will give you another list—one that’s designed to convince your CEO and leadership team why everyone needs to take ownership and engage in TeamSTEPPS. With compelling stories and hard data to back them up, the president and CEO of The MetroHealth System, the public health system in Cleveland, will explain how TeamSTEPPS has worked across his 7,400-employee system. He’ll also tell you why he said “yes” to TeamSTEPPS as a brand new CEO in 2013. And why, 4 years later, he’s more convinced it’s the right thing to do.

June 16: It's Time for a Movement: Using Strategies From Grassroots Organizing to Mobilize your Team

Speaker: Andrew Morris-Singer, M.D.

Andrew Morris-Singer, M.D.As we transition to team-based care, health care professionals demand new skills to engage the heads and hearts of their teams—combining relational approaches to change management with traditional technical methods. With more than 15 years of experience in community organizing, Andrew Morris-Singer, M.D., is an advocate for the use of social movement strategies to accelerate the shift to team-based care and team-oriented culture. In this talk, participants will explore powerful tools that shape effective teams and cultivate personal resilience. From strategic storytelling to build stronger connections, to the use of social network analysis and relational leadership to advance change, care teams across the country are using grassroots organizing to revitalize primary care.
