Plenary Presentations

June 14: Lessons Learned at 25,000 MPH

Rhea Seddon, M.D. Speaker: Rhea Seddon, M.D.

Do perceptions change when a young physician is transported from the chaos of the trauma room to the calm precision of a Space Shuttle in Earth’s orbit? What courage does it take when the life at stake is not a patient’s but her own—and that of her crewmates? How does the work differ when it must be coordinated, not with a small group, but with thousands of dedicated and enthusiastic team members in Mission Control and around the globe? Are important and necessary skills transferrable from one enterprise to the other? As NASA’s first surgeon astronaut and one of the first females to fly in space, Dr. Rhea Seddon learned well the lessons of collaborative teamwork, precise communication, standardized processes, constant practice, contingency planning, and strong leadership on her three flights into space. Then she spent many years adapting them for health care. Her story weaves a tale of a remarkable career journey that will surprise and inspire everyone.

June 16: It's Time for a Movement: Grassroots Strategies to Accelerate a Shift to Team-based Care

Andrew Morris-Singer, M.D. Speaker: Andrew Morris-Singer, M.D.

With the growing demand for a health care revolution, our nation's care community is challenged with how to advocate for and advance change, like a shift to team-based care, in the midst of increasingly complex systems. With more than 15 years of experience in grassroots community organizing, Andrew Morris-Singer, M.D., is an advocate for the use of social movement strategies to accelerate innovation and reform in health care. In his talk, attendees will explore powerful tools that help health care professionals create teams and coalitions, mobilize resources and power, and shift hearts and minds to advance unprecedented changes.
