Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence

Online Continuing Medical Education Course

University of Wisconsin Medical School

A free Web-based continuing medical education (CME) program is available that offers information and specific approaches for implementing the U.S. Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline (PHS Guideline), Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence.

The course is designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, and allied health professionals to support tobacco cessation efforts with patients.

Accessibility Notice: These course materials are not resident on a Government Web site and therefore do not comply with the requirements for Federal information resources under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Program Sponsors

This CME program is jointly sponsored by the University of Wisconsin Medical School, the Office of Continuing Medical Education, and the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (CTRI).

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality worked in partnership with CTRI and other organizations in the health care field to develop the PHS Guideline upon which the program is based.

Course Content

The course includes five modules:

  1. Why should I treat tobacco dependence?
  2. How do I treat tobacco smokers who are willing to quit?
  3. How can I help prevent relapse?
  4. How do I treat tobacco users who are not willing to make a quit attempt?
  5. Special Populations

CME Credit

The course may be taken for credit free of charge by participants:

  • First-time users must sign up for an account to receive continuing medical education credit.
