Program Description

The goal of the Tufts-NEMC Clinical Care Research postdoctoral fellowship program is to train future leaders and innovators in the application of methods of health services research and to improve clinical care and outcomes for patients. Given the clinical nature of the program, it is primarily intended for physicians who have completed their residency training. By teaching core methods and skills to self-motivated candidates and by facilitating the fellow's successful completion of an independent research project in an environment where excellence and innovation are expected and opportunities are plentiful, the program intends to train health services researchers who will embark on successful and pioneering careers. Participants in the program can opt to complete their training in 2 years (culminating in earning an M.S. in Clinical Research) or continue with a third year completing a research doctorate degree (Ph.D. in Clinical Research).

The program's courses are provided by the Tufts University, Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences' Clinical Research Program. Most course instructors are members of the Tufts-NEMC Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies faculty. The program includes coursework in health services research, epidemiology, biostatistics, predictive modeling, meta-analysis and decision modeling, survey methodology, medical informatics, as well as study design seminars, and continuing courses in manuscript and grant-writing. Perhaps, the most important accomplishment of fellows while at Tufts-NEMC will be completion of an independent research project and Masters Thesis, and for some, a Ph.D. Dissertation. A large faculty of leaders and innovators in health services research, research resources, and many cooperative and vanguard health care system laboratories are all available assets of the Tufts-NEMC program.
