Project Description: This research comprises a series of randomized controlled clinical trials designed to compare four methods to increase awareness about organ donation and decision to donate. The primary outcome is patient understanding of organ donation and brain death measured quantitatively and qualitatively. Secondary outcomes include a measure of commitment to donate and documentation of willingness to donate such as obtaining and carrying an organ donation card.
Career Goals: Dr. Wall is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine, where he also received his MD. He served his residency in Emergency Medicine at Harbor-University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Medical Center and went on to earn his MS in Health Services at UCLA. Dr. Wall is currently completing his coursework for a MA in Instructional Design. The grantee hopes to assist his Department in the future in developing activities so as to establish a center for emergency medicine patient education research.
Progress to Date: All English speakers have been interviewed and coded. A research associate fluent in Spanish will conduct the Spanish interviews and assist with the Spanish video production and research protocol.
Future Plans: The study team will finish qualitative data analysis and coding for the English speakers. The ODBI Survey derivation and validation study will be analyzed and submitted for publication. The English video RCT will begin as will the Spanish ODBI study.
