Associations of adverse childhood experiences with past-year DSM-5 psychiatric and substance use disorders in older adults.
This study examined the association of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) with past-year psychiatric and/or substance use disorders in older adults. A cross-section of the 2012-2013 National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions WAVE III was used and survey respondents 65 or older were included. About 36% of older adults reported some form of ACEs and there higher odds for both past-year psychiatric disorder and substance use disorders.

Integration of screening, assessment, and treatment for cannabis and other drug use disorders in primary care: an evaluation in three pilot sites.
This pilot study examined whether integrating evidence-based implementation strategies to implement Behavioral Health Integration (BHI) into primary care to increase diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs). Three pilot sites were used and patients were given annual screening for past-year cannabis and drug use, a Symptom Checklist for DSM-5 SUDs, and shared decision-making about different treatment options. Out of 39,599 eligible patients, almost 60% were screened for cannabis and other drug use. Daily cannabis use was reported with 2% of patients, and other drug use 1%. Of those patients, 51% and 37% completed an SUD Symptom Checklist. There was a higher proportion of patients diagnosed with cannabis use disorder (CUD) but not drug use disorder. However, the reverse was true for patients receiving treatment for drug-use disorders.

Drug use mediates the relationship between depressive symptoms and adherence to ART among recently incarcerated people living with HIV.
The purpose of this study was to identify the mechanisms involved with antiretroviral therapy (ART) non-adherence among people living with HIV (PLHIV) after release from prison. Results showed that, on average, study participants achieved 79% ART adherence. Greater symptoms of depression were associated with greater drug use, which was in turn associated with lower adherence. Lower adherence self-efficacy was associated with depressive symptoms, but not with adherence. Results suggested that depression screening and targeted mental health and substance use services for depressed individuals at risk of substance use constitute important steps to promote adherence to ART after prison release.

New onset alcohol use disorder following bariatric surgery.
Researchers sought to characterize the patients and incidence of alcohol use disorder (AUD) following sleeve gastrectomy (SG) compared to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). They found that the prevalence of alcohol use disorder in patients undergoing SG and RYGB was similar pre- and postoperatively, with the majority of patients developing AUD following their second postoperative year. The authors recommended understanding the timing and incidence of AUD in order to provide appropriate counseling and treatment.

Real-time demonstration of a mHealth app designed to reduce college students hazardous drinking.
The authors developed a smartphone application (SmarTrek) that targets college students and aims to reduce risky alcohol use. They found that the majority of participants agreed that SmarTrek was easy to use and that the information provided was useful and had a positive effect on decreasing their drinking.

Achieving mental health and substance use disorder treatment parity: a quarter century of policy making and research.
This article reviews the history and measures benefits from the 2008 passing of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA). It led to significant improvements in mental health care coverage. Directions for future research are also discussed.

Expanded HIV clinic-based mental health care services: association with viral suppression.
This study compared two cohorts of people living with HIV (PLWH) who were receiving clinic-based mental health services. Cohort A received the services before or during 2012, and Cohort B from 2013-2014. Cohort A had three times as many participants with a CD4 count <200. Cohort B were more likely to also have a substance abuse diagnosis. The researchers concluded that the later cohort may not have as much benefit from increased access to co-located mental health services and substance use services.

Poly-use of cannabis and other substances among juvenile-justice involved youth: variations in psychological and substance-related problems by typology.
Juvenile offenders engage in both cannabis use and polysubstance use at higher rates than the general adolescent population. Yet, limited research has examined the relationship between cannabis poly-use (e.g., cannabis and alcohol use) and functional or psychological problems among juvenile offenders. The current study addresses this gap by examining the association of polysubstance use of cannabis compared to cannabis only use with cognitive functioning, psychological distress, and substance-related problems among juvenile detainees.
