Preparing for an aging world: engaging biogerontologists, geriatricians, and the society.
This perspective article summarizes a workshop discussion in Tucson in April, 2014, on biomedical approaches to best extend healthspan as way to reduce age-related dysfunction and disability. It further specifies the action items necessary to unite health professionals, scientists, and society to partner around the exciting and palpable opportunities to extend healthspan.

A Blue Ocean strategy for palliative care: focus on family caregivers.
The authors argue that there is an undeniable societal need (or high consumer value) for some entity to ensure that family caregivers stay healthy not only so they can provide the best care possible to patients, but also for their own sake. They believe palliative care should rise to meet this societal need and take on family caregivers as a new focus of its specialized care.

Effectiveness of remote patient monitoring after discharge of hospitalized patients with heart failure: the better effectiveness after transition-heart failure (BEAT-HF) randomized clinical trial.
The researchers evaluated the effectiveness of a care transition intervention using remote patient monitoring in reducing 180-day all-cause readmissions among a broad population of older adults hospitalized with HF. Theyn found that intervention and usual care groups did not differ significantly in readmissions for any cause 180 days after discharge.

New approaches to reduce readmissions in patients with heart failure.
The authors discuss a study by Ong and colleagues that presents the results of Better Effectiveness After Transition–Heart Failure (BEATHF), a randomized clinical trial of a combined telemonitoring and care transitions intervention to prevent readmission in patients with heart failure. The BEAT-HF intervention did not lower readmissions after hospitalization for heart failure.

Comparative effectiveness of iron and erythropoiesis-stimulating agent dosing on health-related quality of life in patients receiving hemodialysis.
The researchers examined the independent associations of bolus versus maintenance iron dosing and high versus low erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) dosing on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). They found that for individuals with low baseline hemoglobin levels, higher ESA dosing and bolus iron dosing were associated with slightly higher HRQoL scores in follow-up.

Computed tomography screening for lung cancer: A high-value proposition?
This study assessed the cost-effectiveness of low-dose computed tomographic scan screening for lung cancer within the Canadian health care system. It found that compared with no screening, the reference scenario saved 51,000 quality-adjusted life-years (QALY) and had an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of CaD $52,000/QALY.

Impact of bleeding on quality of life in patients on DAPT: insights from TRANSLATE-ACS.
This study sought to determine the incidence of post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) bleeding that occurs on contemporary prolonged dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) and its impact on quality of life (QOL). Among patients undergoing PCI for acute myocardial infarction, bleeding during follow-up was associated with worse 6-month utility and QOL

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have similar excellent outcomes after total knee replacement compared with patients with osteoarthritis.
The purpose of this study is to assess pain, function, and quality of life 2 years after total knee replacement (TKR) in contemporary patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compared with patients with osteoarthritis (OA). It concluded that patients with RA undergoing primary TKR have excellent 2-year outcomes, comparable with OA, in spite of worse preoperative pain and function.

Hospitalization burden and survival among older glioblastoma patients.
The researchers performed a retrospective cohort study among patients aged 65 years and older with glioblastoma diagnosed between 1999 and 2007. They found that higher comorbidity score and black race were associated with an increased risk of being hospitalized for at least 25% of remaining life, whereas radiation, temozolomide, and extensive surgery were associated with a decreased risk.

The impact of gout on patient's lives: a study of African-American and Caucasian men and women with gout.
The objectives of this study were to assess the impact of gout on patients’ quality of life (QOL) and explore gender and race differences in the impact of gout on patients’ QOL. Some frequently cited high-ranked concerns among the ten nominal race- and sex-stratified groups were: (1) effect of gout flare on daily activities (n = 10 groups); (2) work disability (n = 8 groups);and (3) severe pain (n = 8 groups).

Physician and patient and caregiver health attitudes and their effect on Medicare resource allocation for patients with advanced cancer.
The investigators sought to determine how baseline attitudes toward quality vs quantity of life affect end-of-life resource allocation. They found that, compared with patients and caregivers, otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) physician allocations differed significantly in all 15 benefit categories except home care. They concluded that understanding the effect of baseline attitudes is important for effective end-of-life discussions.

Cost-effectiveness of treatment of diabetic macular edema.
The researchers sought to determine the cost-effectiveness of different treatments of diabetic macular edema (DME). They found that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors with or without laser treatment provide important health benefits with favorable cost-effectiveness, costing less per QALY gained than many accepted therapies.

Second-line agents for glycemic control for type 2 diabetes: are newer agents better?
The researchers aimed to assess the benefits and harms of four commonly used antihyperglycemia treatment regimens considering clinical effectiveness, quality of life, and cost. According to the model used by the researchers, all regimens resulted in similar life years and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) regardless of glycemic control goal, but the regimen with sulfonylurea incurred significantly lower cost per QALY.
