Dietary intake correlated to waist-to-hip ratio in patients on maintenance hemodialysis.
Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing regular hemodialysis (RHD) are susceptible to protein-energy malnutrition (PEM). Insufficient dietary consumption and changes in body measurements are among the diagnostic criteria for PEM. The purpose of this study was to measure the adherence of ESRD patients on RHD to the 2020 National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative (NKF-KDOQI) recommendations for nutritional sufficiency during a dialysis day (DD) and analyze the association between dietary energy (DEI) and protein (DPI) intake and body measurements. The study utilized a secondary review of clinical and demographic data from 142 adults in the Rutgers Nutrition and Kidney Disease database. The correlations between DEI, DPI, and body measurements such as body mass index (BMI), BMI classification, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were evaluated. The study found that the median age of the participants was 55.7 years, with 58% being male and 83.8% identifying as Black/African American. The median time spent on dialysis was 42.0 months (approximately 3.5 years). Seventy-five percent of the participants were classified as overweight or obese. The WHR was 1.0 ± 0.8 cm for males and 0.9 ± 0.1 cm for females. Neither DEI nor DPI on a DD complied with the NKF-KDOQI 2020 recommendations. The median DEI was 17.6 ± 8.4 kcal/kg, and DPI was 0.7 ± 0.4 g/kg. Significant positive correlations were found between DEI and DPI and WHR for the entire sample. In females, a significant positive correlation emerged between DPI and WHR. The researchers concluded that the nutritional consumption of ESRD patients undergoing RHD falls short of the NKF-KDOQI 2020 guidelines on a DD.

Prediabetes awareness is not associated with lower consumption of self-reported added sugar in U.S. adults.
This study examined whether prediabetes awareness is associated with lower consumption of self-reported added sugar in US adults 20 years and older. Cross-sectional data for 3314 adults with prediabetes were analyzed from 2013-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. Among 3314 adults, 528 reported being aware and 2786 were unaware of their condition. Prediabetes awareness was not significantly associated with added sugar consumption with no differences for age, sex, or race/Hispanic origin.

The role of stress responses on engagement in dietary and physical activity behaviors among Latino adults living with prediabetes.
This study used qualitative methods to understand how Latinos with prediabetes attempted to modify their diet and physical activity behaviors to slow type-2 diabetes progression and how stress affected their engagement in these behaviors. Findings showed that stress affected behavioral and cognitive progresses that adversely altered primarily dietary behaviors.

Impact of guideline-recommended dietitian assessments on weight gain in infants with cystic fibrosis.
This study’s purpose was to characterize nutrition management for infants with cystic fibrosis (CF) with inadequate weight gain and to assess association of dietitian assessments and center-level weight-for-age Z-scores (WAZ). Encounter data from 226 infants was used from across 28 US CF Centers from the Baby Observational Nutritional study between January 2012 through December 2017. The authors identified dietitian assessments and consensus guideline-recommended responses to inadequate weight gain: calorie increases, pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) increases, or shortened time to next visit. They compared center assessments by funnel plot and summarized median WAZ by center. Of 2,527 visits, 808 visits had identified inadequate weight gain, distributed in 216 infants. Assessments occurred in 77% of visits but varied widely between centers (range 17% - 98%). They used funnel plot analysis to identify high-performers for frequent dietitian assessments (range 92% - 98%) and 4 under-performers (range 17% - 56%). High-performers treated inadequate weight gain more often with adequate calories (80% vs 52%) and closer follow-up (63% vs 49%) compared to underperformers. Three of 4 high-performing sites met center nutrition goals for positive median WAZ at 2 years old unlike 3 under-performers, despite similar patient characteristics.

Dietary beliefs and management of older American Indians with type 2 diabetes.
This qualitative study examined dietary-related beliefs and self-management among older American Indians with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The investigators concluded that American Indian older adults face a variety of challenges to dietary management of T2DM. The investigators suggested that future research efforts can focus on assessing how social support can be leveraged to facilitate healthy diets for American Indians with T2DM.

Identifying and planning for individualized change: patient-provider collaboration using lightweight food diaries in healthy eating and irritable bowel syndrome.
This study examined if the use of a photo-based food diary app will help patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) help gather food and symptom data to help their doctors with disease management. The investigators designed and developed Foodprint which includes a mobile and web app and pre-visit note to go to experts which communicate an individual’s expectations and questions. A control group and a group with IBS were used to determine the effectiveness of Foodprint.

Adults with diabetes residing in "food swamps" have higher hospitalization rates.
This study examined the relationship between ‘food swamps’ and hospitalization rates among adults with diabetes. Food Swamps are defined and measured by a ratio of fast food outlets to grocery stores within a given area. Data resources for this study included the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Community Health Management Hub(R), AHRQ’s Health Care Cost and Utilization Project State Inpatient Databases, and HHS’s Area Health Resources File. The study concludes that higher hospitalization rates among adults with diabetes are significantly associated with food swamps, more so in rural than urban communities, and that improvements to local food environments may help to reduce this disparity.

Preliminary development of the food allergy coping and emotions questionnaires for children, adolescents, and young people: qualitative analysis of data on IgE-mediated food allergy from five countries.
This study examined the use of a food allergy-specific development model that explained emotions and coping styles to children aged 6 to 15 years in Ireland in other countries. The Food Allergy Coping and Emotions (FACE) model was used with 274 participants aged 6 to 23 years and 119 parents in Australia, Ireland, Italy, the UK, and the US. The model has 5 major themes which were present across all the countries. The results will be used to generate an age-specific bank of items for the development of 3 questionnaires to assess emotions and coping in food allergy.

Common questions in food allergy avoidance.
Allergists must be able to provide avoidance advice while suggesting age and nutritionally appropriate substitutions. This review therefore focuses on providing an understanding of identifying potential myths that may surround certain aspects of food allergy management, with a focus on redirecting misconceptions, and enhancing communications that can improve how patients live life with disease.

Food insecurity, chronic illness, and gentrification in the San Francisco Bay Area: an example of structural violence in United States public policy.
This study sought to explore the experiences and structural determinants of food insecurity among a group of low-income PLHIV in the San Francisco Bay Area. It found that the lived experience of food insecurity among participants included periods of insufficient quantity of food and resultant hunger, as well as long-term struggles with quality of food that led to concerns about the poor health effects of a cheap diet.
