Implementing DASH-aligned meals and Self-Measured Blood Pressure to reduce hypertension at senior centers: a RE-AIM analysis.
Investigators implemented two evidence-based interventions not previously tested in senior centers, DASH-aligned congregate meals and Self-Measured Blood Pressure (SMBP), to lower blood pressure (BP) at two senior centers serving low-income, racially diverse communities. Using the RE-AIM framework to analyze implementation, they found that change in systolic BP at Month 1 trended towards significance and change in SMBP reached significance at Month 6; food costs increased by 10%. They concluded that this RE-AIM analysis highlighted the acceptability, feasibility, and fidelity of this DASH/SMBP health intervention to lower BP at senior centers.

Implementing dash-aligned congregate meals and self-measured blood pressure in two senior centers: An open label study.
This study tested whether implementing two evidence-based interventions--DASH-aligned meals provided through an existing congregate meal program, and support for home Self-Measured Blood Pressure (SMBP) monitoring--lowers blood pressure among participants at two senior centers serving low-income, racially diverse communities. Participants were clients aged ≥60, eating ≥4 meals/week at two NYC senior centers. They received DASH-aligned congregate meals, and training in nutrition, BP management education, and personal SMBP device. Primary outcomes was a) change in systolic BP measured by independent health professionals, and b) change in percent with "controlled BP" (Eighth Joint National Committee (JNC-8) Guidelines), at Month 1 compared to Baseline. The authors enrolled 94 participants, with COVID closures interrupting implementation mid-study. Mean systolic BP at Month-1 changed by -4.41 mmHg compared to Baseline. Participants with controlled BP increased at Month 1 and changes in mean BP at Month 1 was significantly correlated with BMI, age, and baseline BP. Mean systolic mean SMBP changed by -6.9 mmHg at Months 5/6.

Conceptualizing food insecurity among older adults: development of a summary indicator in the National Health and Aging Trends Study.
Measurement of food insecurity in older adults is focused on financial barriers to food access. Given that older adults are particularly susceptible to additional access-related barriers including functional limitations and lack of social support, the objective of this study was to construct a summary indicator of food insecurity incorporating these domains. The investigators concluded that food insecurity among older adults is broader than lacking adequate financial resources to obtain food; it is also associated with social and functional limitations.

Dietary beliefs and management of older American Indians with type 2 diabetes.
This qualitative study examined dietary-related beliefs and self-management among older American Indians with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The investigators concluded that American Indian older adults face a variety of challenges to dietary management of T2DM. The investigators suggested that future research efforts can focus on assessing how social support can be leveraged to facilitate healthy diets for American Indians with T2DM.

Social and demographic predictors of nutritional risk: cross-sectional analyses from the UAB Study of Aging II.
Social factors may disparately affect access to food and nutritional risk among older adults by race and gender. This study assesses these associations using the Mini Nutritional Assessment among 414 community-dwelling persons 75+ years of age in Alabama. Multivariable analyses indicated that social factors affect nutritional risk differently by race and gender. Nutritional risk interventions are warranted for older adults.

Meals enhancing nutrition after discharge: findings from a pilot randomized controlled trial.
This pilot study's objective was to evaluate the feasibility of conducting a randomized controlled trial assessing a post-discharge home-delivered meal program's impact on older adults' nutritional intake and hospital readmissions and to assess patient acceptability and satisfaction with the program. It found that participants were overwhelmingly satisfied (82 percent to 100 percent satisfied or very satisfied) with staff performance, meal quality, and delivery processes.

Cost-effectiveness of nutrition intervention in long-term care.
The researchers sought to determine the cost-effectiveness of two nutrition interventions on food, beverage, and supplement intake and body weight. They found that oral liquid nutrition supplements and snack offers were efficacious in promoting caloric intake when coupled with assistance to promote consumption and a variety of options, but neither intervention resulted in significant weight gain.

Symptoms, weight loss, and physical function in a lifestyle intervention study of older cancer survivors.
This study examined how overweight long-term survivors’ symptom severity associated with comorbidity prior to a diet and exercise intervention was associated with post-intervention function. It found that symptom severity of older, overweight cancer survivors negatively affects physical function. However, greater weight loss and more physical activity were associated with higher functioning scores, regardless of symptom severity.

Income, food insecurity, and osteoporosis among older adults in the 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
The researchers investigated osteoporosis and low socioeconomic status (SES). They concluded that income and food insecurity may have significant implications not just for immediate nutritional outcomes, but also for conditions such as osteoporosis that develop over the lifespan.

Nutritional risk and body mass index predict hospitalization, nursing home admissions, and mortality in community-dwelling older adults: results from the UAB Study of Aging with 8.5 years of follow-up.
This study finds that nutritional risk was prospectively associated with all-cause and nonsurgical hospitalizations and with nursing home admission and mortality in unadjusted models. After adjusting for other risk factors, the association between high nutritional risk and all-cause and nonsurgical hospitalizations remained significant.

Calorie restriction in overweight seniors: response of older adults to a dieting study: the CROSSROADS randomized controlled clinical trial.
The researchers conducted a study designed to evaluate whether the benefits of intentional weight loss exceed the potential risks in a group of community-dwelling obese older adults. The development and implementation of the CROSSROADS protocol, including a description of the methodology, as well as unique data management features of the trial results, are presented in this article.
