Implementation strategies for depression and anxiety screening in a pediatric cystic fibrosis center: a quality improvement project.
The objective of this study was to share key strategies that led to successful mental health screening (MHS) implementation in one pediatric cystic fibrosis center and to report implementation and screening outcomes. Results showed that leveraging coproduction to address stakeholder needs led to successful implementation of a sustainable MHS process.

Symptoms of anxiety and depression and use of anxiolytic-hypnotics and antidepressants in current and former smokers with and without COPD - a cross sectional analysis of the COPDGene cohort.
This study compared the frequency of anxiety/depressive symptoms of current and former smokers with and without COPD and their use of anxiolytic-hypnotics/antidepressants. A cohort of 5331 current/former smokers were surveyed. About 25% of smokers with and without COPD had anxiety/depressive symptoms. Unmedicated smokers tended to be African American, male, have no health insurance, have severe-very severe COPD and higher respiratory symptoms/exacerbation history.

Adherence and healthcare utilization among older adults with COPD and depression.
The researchers quantified the independent effects of adherence to antidepressants and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) maintenance medications on healthcare utilization among individuals co-diagnosed with COPD and depression. They found that, compared to no use, higher levels of adherence to COPD maintenance medications were associated with decreased risk of ED visits and hospitalizations. Similarly, higher levels of adherence to antidepressants resulted in decreased risk of ED visits and hospitalization.

Adherence to maintenance medications among older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. the role of depression.
The objective of this study was to assess the impact of depression on COPD maintenance medication adherence among of Medicare beneficiaries newly diagnosed with COPD. Average monthly adherence to COPD maintenance medications was low, peaking at 57 percent in the month after first fill and decreasing to 35 percent within 6 months. In the adjusted regression model, depression was associated with decreased adherence to COPD maintenance medications.

Depression is associated with readmission for acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The authors characterized the associations between depression and anxiety and COPD readmission risk. They found that depression is an independent risk factor for both short- and long-term readmissions for acute exacerbation of COPD and may represent a modifiable risk factor. They also found that in-hospital tobacco cessation counseling was associated with reduced 1-year readmission.
