Patient and physician experience with interhospital transfer: a qualitative study.
This qualitative study explored patients’ and involved physicians’ experience with interhospital transfer (IHT) to understand specific factors that may impact the quality and safety of this care transition. Individual interviews were conducted with adult patients transferred to cardiology, general medicine, and oncology services at a tertiary care academic medical center, as well as their transferring physician, accepting attending physician, and accepting/admitting resident physician. Participants included 10 adults (6 cardiology, 2 medicine, and 2 oncology), 9 accepting attending physicians, 12 accepting and/or admitting resident physicians, and 5 transferring physicians. Emergent themes demonstrated that participants held a shared understanding for the reason for the transfer and relayed a general dissatisfaction regarding the timing and lack of advanced notification of transfer. The authors found distinct differences in IHT experience by stakeholder group - with physicians relaying discontent on intrahospital chains of communication and interhospital information exchange, and patient participants focused more readily on the physical aspects of IHT.

Older adults experiences with ambulation during a hospital stay: a qualitative study.
The purpose of this study was to understand older adults' perceptions of and experiences with ambulation during a hospital admission. Through five focus groups meetings, participants described high complexity in deciding whether or not they could ambulate. Six categories were identified. This paper discussed these findings.

Association of preferences for participation in decision-making with care satisfaction among hospitalized patients.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of hospitalized patients' desire to delegate decisions to their physician with care dissatisfaction. The investigators indicated that the findings suggested that patient preferences to participate in medical decision-making were statistically significantly associated with dissatisfaction of hospitalized patients. The authors assert that clinicians should individualize their encouragement of patient participation in diagnostic and management decisions to maximize patient satisfaction.

Factors associated with family experience in pediatric inpatient care.
Researchers assessed which aspects of pediatric inpatient experience have the strongest relationships with parents' willingness to recommend a hospital. Their cross-sectional study examined surveys completed by parents of children hospitalized at hospitals using the Child Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey. They found that child comfort and nurse-parent communication showed the strongest relationships with willingness to recommend, followed by preparing to leave the hospital, doctor-parent communication, and keeping parents informed. They recommended improvement efforts focusing on creating an age-appropriate environment, improving the effectiveness of provider interactions, and engaging parents to share their values and concerns.

We want to know: patient comfort speaking up about breakdowns in care and patient experience.
The purpose of this study was to assess patient comfort speaking up about problems during hospitalisation and to identify patients at increased risk of having a problem and not feeling comfortable speaking up. The investigators suggest that creating conditions for patients to be comfortable speaking up may result in service recovery opportunities and improved patient experience. They assert that such efforts should consider the impact of health literacy and mental health on patient engagement in patient-safety activities.

Engaging hospitalized patients with personalized health information: a randomized trial of an inpatient portal.
This study examined the effects of an inpatient portal intervention on patient activation, patient satisfaction, patient engagement with health information, and 30-day hospital admissions. A randomized trial was conducted from March 2014 to May 2017 with 426 English- or Spanish-speaking patients from 2 cardiac medical-surgical units at an urban academic medical center. Patients were randomized into 3 groups: 1) usual care, 2) tablet with general Internet access, and 3) tablet with an inpatient portal. There was a difference in patient activation between the 3 groups, but the inpatient portal group had lower 30-day hospital admissions. There was also a difference with patient engagement with health information between the inpatient portal and tablet-only groups.

Paediatric hospital admission processes and outcomes: a qualitative study of parents' experiences and priorities.
The investigators aimed to characterize, among children hospitalised with ambulatory care sensitive conditions, families' experiences as they transitioned from outpatient to inpatient care, identify hospital admission processes and outcomes most important to families and determine how parental perspectives differed between children admitted directly and through emergency departments (ED). They conducted semistructured interviews with parents of hospitalised children at four structurally diverse hospitals.

Surfacing and addressing hospitalized patients' needs: proactive nurse rounding as a tool.
This paper reported on rounding interventions employed at high performing hospitals, and provided three case studies on how proactive nurse rounding was successfully implemented to improve patient-centredness. The investigators concluded that proactive rounding interventions are a feasible approach to help surface and address hospitalized patients' needs in a timely manner.

"Scared to go to the hospital": inpatient experiences with undesirable events.
Researchers surveyed pediatric inpatients and caregivers to understand their perspectives on undesirable events. By giving them an opportunity to use their own words to describe their experiences, they found a diverse array of undesirable events. Their qualitative analysis revealed four major types of events that patients and caregivers experienced: mismanagement, communication, policy, and lack of care coordination.

Patient perceptions of wearable face-mounted computing technology and the effect on the doctor-patient relationship.
The authors aimed to determine patients' perception of and their privacy concerns with Google Glass. They found that the majority, 64% of respondents, appeared open to and would want their doctor to use face-mounted wearable computers such as Google Glass, even when they were unfamiliar with this technology. Although some patients expressed concerns about privacy, the authors found that patients were much less concerned about wearable technologies affecting the trust they have in their physician.

Patient experiences using an inpatient personal health record.
Researchers investigated post-operative cardiac surgical patients' experience using an inpatient personal health record (PHR) on a tablet computer to increase engagement in their hospital care. They found that patients reported high satisfaction with being able to view their hospital medications and access educational materials related to their medical conditions. Patients also reported a desire to view daily progress reports about their hospital stay.

Rationale and study protocol for the Nursing Home Compare Plus (NHCPlus) randomized controlled trial: A personalized decision aid for patients transitioning from the hospital to a skilled-nursing facility.
This paper describes the design and rationale of a two-arm randomized controlled trial designed to test the effectiveness of Nursing Home Compare Plus (NHCPlus) compared to usual care only, in a sample of patients being discharged from the hospital to an SNF (N=229). Assessments were conducted within 24h prior to patient discharge and 30-days post discharge. A primary outcome to be examined was the use of NHC.
