Screening performance of digital breast tomosynthesis vs digital mammography in community practice by patient age, screening round, and breast density.
The purpose of this study was to compare digital mammography (DM) vs digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) performance by age, baseline vs subsequent screening round, and breast density category. Information was taken from screening examinations at participating Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium facilities of 1.5 million women aged 40 to 79 with no prior history of breast cancer. Findings showed that improvements in recall and cancer detection rates with DBT were greatest on baseline mammograms. On subsequent screening mammograms, the benefits of DBT varied by age and breast density, and women with extremely dense breasts did not benefit from improved recall or cancer detection with DBT on subsequent screening rounds.

Breast conserving surgery compared with mastectomy in male breast cancer: a brief systematic review.
The surgical guidelines for male breast cancer (MBC) have been largely guided by female-predominant clinical trials. Because no clinical trial has been conducted to examine the surgical treatment of MBC, the investigators performed a systematic review comparing the survival of patients with MBC who had undergone breast conserving surgery (BCS) and those who had undergone mastectomy and evaluated the patients' radiotherapy compliance after BCS.

Performance characteristics of digital vs film screen mammography in community practice.
In this study, the investigators examined performance characteristics of digital vs film screen mammography in community practice by comparing the performance characteristics of 297 629 full field digital (FFDM) and 416 791 screen film mammograms (SFM). In their study, modest gains in performance were achieved with the introduction of FFDM as a replacement for SFM, in a large health care organization.

Testing the effects of narrative and play on physical activity among breast cancer survivors using mobile apps: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.
This paper described a study to determine the effectiveness of an intervention that combines narrative and gaming to encourage sustained physical activity in postmenopausal breast cancer survivors. The primary outcome of the study is minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity at six months. Other objectively measured outcomes include fitness and physical function. Self-reported outcomes include quality of life, depression, and motivation.

Comparative effectiveness of chemotherapy regimens in prolonging survival for two large population-based cohorts of elderly adults with breast and colon cancer in 1992-2009.
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of chemotherapy in prolonging survival according to age in breast and colon cancer. It found that the effectiveness of chemotherapy decreased with age in participants with breast cancer, in whom chemotherapy appears to be effective until age 79 except for the doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide combination, which was effective in participants aged 80 to 84.

Comparative effectiveness of imaging modalities to determine metastatic breast cancer treatment response.
This literature review evaluates studies regarding the effectiveness of different imaging modalities in evaluating treatment response among metastatic breast cancer patients. The review of the literature demonstrates a current paucity of evidence regarding the use of imaging for treatment evaluation of metastatic lesions among breast cancer patients.

Utilization of lymph node dissection, race/ethnicity, and breast cancer outcomes.
This study reports on the impact of nodal surgery utilization on survival among white, African American, Hispanic, and Asian women in a large population of women with breast cancer. It found that the disparities in survival among African American and Hispanic women with breast cancer are not explained by nodal surgery utilization among women with micrometastasis and macrometastasis in sentinel lymph nodes.
