Training the next generation of learning health system scientists.
The purpose of this paper was to describe the approaches developed by 11 Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)- and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute- funded Centers of Excellence (COEs) to grow the number of learning health systems (LHS) scientists. Program directors for each COE have provided descriptive program data since 2018. The authors found that since the program began, the 11 COEs have partnered with health systems to train 110 scholars. Nine programs partner with a Veterans Affairs health system and 9 partner with safety net providers. Clinically trained scholars include 70 physicians and 17 scholars in other clinical disciplines. Non-clinicians represent diverse fields, with most representing population health sciences. Challenges include guiding scholars through issues that can disrupt or delay projects during already-limited program time, such as delays in accessing data, organizational changes, pandemic impacts and others. The researchers concluded that the program documentation provides evidence of scholars' academic accomplishments and career-trajectory achievements.

Development and evaluation of a remote training strategy for the implementation of mental health evidence-based practices in rural schools: pilot study protocol.
This paper describes a pilot study protocol to develop and evaluate a remote training strategy for the implementation of mental health evidence-based practices (EBPs) in rural schools. Rural schools are increasingly implementing multi-tier positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) to address school-climate problems. The study will use a mixed-methods approach for the development of the training platform, and a hybrid type 2, pilot randomized controlled trial to examine the implementation and student outcomes of two training strategies: Remote Video vs. Remote Video plus Coaching. The EPBs will be evaluated on appropriateness, feasibility, acceptability, usability, and preliminary student outcomes of the two online training strategies for the implementation of EPBs at PBIS Tier 2.

Building community and resilience in Massachusetts nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Researchers discuss the partnership of the Massachusetts Senior Care Association and Hebrew SeniorLife with AHRQ ECHO National Nursing Home COVID-19 Action Network (the Network). This educational program provided 16 weeks of free weekly virtual sessions to 295 eligible nursing homes. The Network weekly meetings were a source of connection, emotional support, and validation and may be a valuable mechanism to support resilience and wellbeing for nursing home staff.

Implementation science training and resources for nurses and nurse scientists.
This study discusses the need for implementation science training for nurses and nurse scientists and to encourage training in implementation science for these professions. The differences between quality improvement and implementation science is described as well. Implementation science educational opportunities were reviewed internationally along with organizations and literature. The role of nurses and nurse scientists in translating evidence into routine practice was also examined.

Therapist financial strain and turnover: interactions with system-level implementation of evidence-based practices.
In this study, the investigators prospectively examined the relationship between therapist financial strain and turnover in 247 therapists in 28 community mental health agencies. The investigators expected greater therapist financial strain to predict higher turnover and participation in a system-funded evidence-based practice (EBP) training initiative to alleviate this effect. They found that, controlling for covariates, financial strain predicted therapist turnover but not for therapists who participated in an EBP training initiative.

Training patients to review scientific reports for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute: an observational study.
This observational study aimed to evaluate the effect of new training for patient peer reviewers of scientific reports for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). A new online training in peer review was used to help change reviewers’ knowledge and skills and change self-efficacy and attitudes. Reviewers improved their answers to the knowledge questions. Median numbers of answers improved after the training, particularly in questions targeting the specifics of PCORI peer review. It modestly increased reviewers’ confidence in completing a high-quality peer review. Their excitement about providing a review slightly increased. All reviewers were satisfied with the training.

A comparison of in-person and online training in a statewide clinical education program for dissemination of HIV, HCV and STD clinical evidence.
This study compared in-person and online training for dissemination of clinical evidence of HIV, HCV, and STD. The study used 250 clinicians completing four training courses in dual formats over a three-month period. Online training was the preferred format by clinicians.

Comparison of functional benefits of self-management training for amputees under virtual world and e-learning conditions.
This project used a randomized design to compare two methods of disseminating an evidence-based self-management intervention for amputees, which included, avatar-based virtual world and e-learning environments. The investigators found that the virtual world group had a significantly higher dropout rate than the e-learning group.

Training in patient-centered outcomes research for specific researcher communities.
A number of publications have discussed approaches to training the scientific workforce in comparative effectiveness research (CER) and patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR). To extend these efforts into specific researcher communities, the AHRQ developed a Funding Opportunity Announcement that called for training for a specific researcher community in collaboration with associated program partners. This paper describes the strategies developed by the 5 subsequently funded programs, and the challenges associated with developing in-person and online programs.

Provider training to screen and initiate evidence-based pediatric obesity treatment in routine practice settings: a randomized pilot trial.
This randomized pilot trial evaluated two training modalities for first-line, evidence-based pediatric obesity services (screening and goal setting) among nursing students. Both live interactive training and Web-facilitated self-study training were acceptable, with higher ratings for live training and participants with previous experience. Knowledge and skill improved from pretraining to post-training and follow-up in both conditions.

Combining training in knowledge translation with quality improvement reduced 30-day heart failure readmissions in a community hospital: a case study.
The authors linked multidisciplinary training in evidence-based practice to an initiative to decrease 30-day readmissions among patients admitted to a community teaching hospital for heart failure (HF). They discovered that training of a multidisciplinary hospital team in use of a knowledge translation model, combined with ongoing facilitation, led to implementation of a budget neutral program that decreased HF readmissions.

Identifying effective approaches for dissemination of clinical evidence--correlation analyses on promotional activities and usage of a guideline-driven interactive case simulation tool in a statewide HIV-HCV-STD clinical education program.
The investigators analyzed correlations between promotional activities and usage of a guideline-driven interactive case simulation tool (ICST) for insomnia screening and treatment in a statewide HIV-HCV-STD clinical education program. They found that promotional activities were strongly correlated with the number of audience as well as the intensity of use of the target resource, with strong correlations identified between the sending of email newsletters and the intensity of resource use by promotion recipients, by new users, and through the most convenient access channel associated with the promotion.

Bringing it home: expanding the local reach of dissemination and implementation training via a university-based workshop.
The Colorado Research in Implementation Science Program (CRISP) developed and delivered an introductory D&I workshop adapted from national programs to extend training reach and foster a local learning community for D&I. This paper describes the context of the local training environment, findings from a pre-workshop needs assessment survey, training design and structure, and post-workshop evaluation. Lessons learned may inform others intending to develop local D&I training workshop.

A consensus statement on trauma mental health: the New Haven Competency Conference process and major findings.
The purpose of this article was to state the need for a comprehensive model of trauma-focused, empirically informed competencies for psychiatrists, and describe the work resulting from the New Haven Competencies consensus conference. The 60 participating experts outlined 5 broad foundational and functional competencies in the areas of trauma-focused and trauma-informed scientific knowledge, psychosocial assessment, psychosocial interventions, professionalism, and relational and systems. Eight cross-cutting competencies were voted into the resulting consensus statement.
