Comparison of socio-demographic characteristics of a computer based breastfeeding educational intervention among rural Hispanic women.
The purpose of this study was to examine association between socio-demographic characteristics and breastfeeding knowledge, self-efficacy and breastfeeding attrition prediction among rural Hispanic women. It found a significant positive association between self-efficacy and intent to breastfeed. Self-efficacy is an important predictor of intent to breastfeed among rural Hispanic women.

"You get reminded you're a sick person": personal data tracking and patients with multiple chronic conditions.
The researchers’ aim was to explore the perspectives of individuals with multiple chronic conditions (MCC) using a semistructured interview study. Their research questions were (1) How do individuals with MC track their own health and medical data? and (2) How do patients and providers perceive and use patient-tracked data? Their findings potentially explain relatively low adoption of consumer health information technology.

Trends in public perceptions of electronic health records during early years of meaningful use.
To track consumer perceptions of EHRs during this period, the researchers conducted a national telephone survey annually for 3 consecutive years, from 2011 to 2013, corresponding with the early years of Meaningful Use. They concluded that during the early years of the MU program, exposure to EHRs increased while confidence in the benefits of EHRs and concerns about privacy risks became less marked.

The invisible work of personal health information management among people with multiple chronic conditions: qualitative interview study among patients and providers.
The researchers conducted a semistructured interview study with 22 patients with multiple chronic conditions (MCC) with the objective of exploring their role in managing their personal health information. They concluded that personal health information management should be recognized as an additional burden that MCC places upon patients. Their findings suggest that both provider-centered and patient-centered information technologies will continue to be needed.

Development of an interactive social media tool for parents with concerns about vaccines.
The researchers describe a process for designing, building, and evaluating a theory-driven social media intervention tool to help reduce parental concerns about vaccination. Based on focus groups, interviews, and usability evaluations, they made revisions to the tool’s content, design, functionality, and overall look and feel. They concluded that engaging parents at all stages of development is critical when designing a tool to address concerns about childhood vaccines.

Using qualitative methods to create a home health web application user interface for patients with low computer proficiency.
The researchers undertook a multi-phased approach to create a consumer-facing home health web application in Rhode Island. This included reviewing the evidence base to identify design recommendations and then creating a paper prototype and wireframe. They performed qualitative research to iteratively test their proposed user interface with two user groups, home health consumers and hospital case managers and t]hen refined their design to create the final web application.

Exploring patients' health information communication practices with social network members as a foundation for consumer health IT design.
The purpose of this study was to inform the broader design of consumer health IT by characterizing patients’ existing health information communication practices with their social network members. It found that participants’ rationales for health information communication reflected various themes including characteristics and circumstances of the person, characteristics and circumstances of the relationship, and structure and composition of the social network.

DEEPEN: A negation detection system for clinical text incorporating dependency relation into NegEx.
The researchers developed a negation algorithm called DEEPEN to decrease NegEx’s false positives by taking into account the dependency relationship between negation words and concepts within a sentence using Stanford dependency parser. The evaluation results demonstrate DEEPEN, which incorporates dependency parsing into NegEx, can reduce the number of incorrect negation assignment for patients with positive findings.

Evaluating the usability of an interactive, bi-lingual, touchscreen-enabled breastfeeding educational programme: application of Nielson's heuristics.
The study purpose was to conduct heuristic evaluation of an interactive, bilingual touchscreen-enabled breastfeeding educational program for Hispanic women living in rural settings in Nebraska. The results demonstrated that the system was more consistent with Nielsen’s usability heuristics. With Nielsen’s usability heuristics, it is possible to identify problems in a timely manner.

Health literacy, vulnerable patients, and health information technology use: where do we go from here?
The authors comment on an article in the same issue that found only 32 percent of older adults used the Internet to get health information and only 10 percent of older adults with limited health literacy did so. They discuss its implications for the related issues of access, training, and perhaps most importantly, the usability of websites and other technology platforms.
