Comparative effectiveness of high-dose versus standard-dose influenza vaccine among patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis.
This study compared outcomes of routine dialysis patients who received either the standard dose vaccine (SDV) for influenza or a high-dose vaccine (HDV). Out of 22,215 influenza patient-seasons among adults 65 years and older, 97.4% received SDV and 2.6% received HDV. There did not seem to be any additional protection provided by the HDV for all-cause mortality or influenza-related outcomes.

Impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines on hospitalizations for pneumonia in the United States.
In this study, the investigators described the existing evidence for both the direct and indirect impact of Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) on pneumonia among children and adults in the US since PCV introduction. The introduction of PCVs into the US routine infant vaccination schedule led to important reductions in the burden of invasive pneumococcal diseases and non-invasive pneumonia among vaccinated and unvaccinated populations. The impact of direct vaccination of older adults in the US since 2014, though difficult to quantify, is currently being evaluated.

Longer-term direct and indirect effects of infant rotavirus vaccination across all ages in the US; 2000 - 2013: analysis of a large hospital discharge dataset.
Rotavirus disease dramatically declined among children under 5 years of age since the rotavirus vaccine was introduced in 2006. In this study, data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project State Inpatient Database were used to conduct a time-series analysis of monthly hospital discharges across age groups for acute gastroenteritis and rotavirus from 2000-2013, in order to elucidate population level impacts.

Trends in rate of seizure-associated hospitalizations among children <5 years old before and after rotavirus vaccine introduction in the United Sates, 2000-2013.
Since rotavirus vaccine introduction, hospitalizations for treatment of acute gastroenteritis have decreased. Researchers assessed whether there has been an associated decrease in seizure-associated hospitalizations. Their analysis provides evidence for a decrease in seizure hospitalizations following rotavirus vaccine introduction in the United States, with the greatest impact in age groups with a high rotavirus-associated disease burden and during rotavirus infection season.

National estimates of reductions in acute gastroenteritis-related hospitalizations and associated costs in US children after implementation of rotavirus vaccines.
The study compared acute gastroenteritis (AGE)-related hospitalization rates among children <5 years of age during the pre-rotavirus vaccine (2000-2006) and post-rotavirus vaccine (2008-2013) periods to estimate national reductions in AGE-related hospitalizations and associated costs.

Changes in empyema among U.S. children in the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine era.
The authors assessed changes in the incidence of empyema hospitalizations among U.S. children after the PCV13 vaccine introduction. They found that although empyema hospitalization rates among U.S. children peaked after the PCV7 vaccine introduction, rates decreased substantially following the introduction of PCV13.

Intussusception rates before and after the introduction of rotavirus vaccine.
The researchers examined trends in intussusception hospitalizations before (2000-2005) and after (2007-2013) rotavirus vaccine introduction to assess whether this observed temporal risk translates into more hospitalized cases at the population level. They concluded that, given the magnitude of declines in rotavirus disease compared with this small increase in intussusception, the benefits of rotavirus vaccination outweigh the increase risk of intussusception.

Changes in childhood pneumonia hospitalizations by race and sex associated with pneumococcal conjugate vaccines.
Introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines in the childhood immunization schedule was associated with decreases in all-cause pneumonia hospitalizations among black and white children in Tennessee, USA. Although racial disparities that existed before introduction of these vaccines have been substantially reduced, rates remain higher in boys than in girls among young children.

Estimating the effect of influenza vaccination on nursing home residents' morbidity and mortality.
This study estimated the effect of influenza vaccination on hospitalization and mortality in nursing home (NH) residents. It found that the association between vaccine match and reduction in overall mortality and pneumonia and influenza hospitalizations was strongest for A/H3N2, the influenza strain typically responsible for the most-severe influenza cases.

Acute gastroenteritis hospitalizations among US children following implementation of the rotavirus vaccine.
Because laboratory testing and coding for rotavirus are not routinely performed for patients with diarrhea, the researchers examined both all-cause acute gastroenteritis and rotavirus-coded hospitalizations among children younger than 5 years from 2000 through 2012. They found that, in 2012, when vaccine coverage was highest, the greatest reductions were observed for all-cause acute gastroenteritis (55 percent) and rotavirus-coded (94 percent) hospitalizations.

Direct, indirect, total, and overall effectiveness of the rotavirus vaccines for the prevention of gastroenteritis hospitalizations in privately insured US children, 2007-2010.
This study demonstrated how direct, indirect, total, and overall effectiveness estimates and absolute benefits of rotavirus vaccines vary through the years following vaccine introduction. It found that direct effectiveness of 1 or more doses of rotavirus vaccine in preventing rotavirus gastroenteritis hospitalizations ranged from 87 to 92 percent each year.
