Physician understanding and ability to communicate harms and benefits of common medical treatments.
The researchers evaluated physician understanding of harms and benefits of common tests and therapies. They found that most clinicians overestimate harms and benefits for most treatments. Likewise, most of the clinicians in our study reported rarely or never using statistical terms to explain treatment options to patients. However, they were interested in resources to improve understanding of treatment effect size.

An efficacy trial of an electronic health record-based strategy to inform patients on safe medication use: the role of written and spoken communication.
The researchers tested the feasibility and efficacy of an electronic health record (EHR) strategy that automated the delivery of print medication information at the time of prescribing. They found that written information and physician counseling were independently associated with patient understanding of risk information and that receiving both was most beneficial. They concluded that although an EHR can be a reliable means to deliver tangible, print medication education to patients, it cannot replace physician-patient communication, and that offering both written and spoken information resulted in a synergistic effect for informing patients.

Characterizing safety-net providers' HPV vaccine recommendations to undecided parents: a pilot study.
The researchers developed a tool to describe strength and content of provider HPV vaccination recommendations. The tool showed how providers undercut their recommendations through qualifications or support them with a rationale. The authors recommended that providers would benefit from communication skills training on how to make explicit recommendations with an evidence-based rationale.

Impact of regionalized care on concordance of plan and preventable adverse events on general medicine services.
This study regionalized 3 inpatient general medical teams to nursing units and examined the association with communication and preventable adverse events (AEs). It found that regionalization of care teams improved recognition of care team members, discussion of daily care plan, and agreement on estimated discharge date, but did not significantly improve nurse and physician concordance of the care plan or reduce the odds of preventable AEs.

Incidence of speech recognition errors in the emergency department.
The study’s aim was to determine the incidence and types of speech recognition (SR) errors introduced by computerized SR technology in the emergency department (ED). It found that SR errors occur commonly with annunciation errors being the most frequent. Error rates were comparable if not lower than previous studies. Fifteen percent of errors were deemed critical, potentially leading to miscommunication that could affect patient care.

Shared decision-making as an existential journey: aiming for restored autonomous capacity.
The researchers described the different ways in which illness represents an existential problem, and its implications for shared decision-making. They found that the fundamental uncertainty, state of vulnerability, and lack of power of the ill patient, imbue shared decision-making with a deeper existential significance and call for greater attention to the emotional and relational dimensions of care. They propose that the aim of shared decision-making should be restoration of the patient's autonomous capacity.

The emerging public discourse on state legalization of marijuana for recreational use in the US: analysis of news media coverage, 2010-2014.
The authors assessed the volume and content of US news media coverage on recreational marijuana policy. In the news outlets studies, they found that 53% of news stories mentioned pro-legalization arguments and 47% mentioned anti-legalization arguments. They concluded that it is critical for the public health community to develop communication strategies to convey accurately the rapidly evolving research evidence regarding recreational marijuana policy.

Mechanisms of communicating health information through Facebook: implications for consumer health information technology design.
The authors aimed to characterize patients' use of communication mechanisms within Facebook for health information communication to provide insight into how consumer HIT solutions may be better designed to meet patients' communication needs and preferences. They found that participants consider multiple factors, including what information they intended to share, what they were trying to accomplish, attributes of technology, and attributes and communication practices of their social networks.

An ethogram to quantify operating room behavior.
The researchers adopted a method from the field of ethology for observing and quantifying the interpersonal interactions of operating room (OR) team members. They found that the ethogram's high interobserver reliability indicates its utility for yielding largely objective, descriptive, quantitative data on OR behavior.

The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability of an observational rating tool to assess team interactions about the awakening and breathing coordination, delirium, and early mobility (ABCDE) bundle in one ICU. Reliability of verbal handoff assessment and handoff quality before and after implementation of a resident handoff bundle.
This study developed validity evidence for the use of the Verbal Handoff Assessment Tool (VHAT),examined the reliability of VHAT scores, and determined whether implementation of a resident handoff bundle was associated with improved verbal patient handoffs among pediatric resident physicians. It found that verbal handoffs improved following implementation of a resident handoff bundle, though gains were variable across the two clinical units.

A review of instruments to measure interprofessional team-based primary care.
The study’s aims were to develop a conceptual framework of high-functioning primary care teams to identify and review instruments that measure the constructs identified in the framework. The majority of instruments were surveys, and the remainder were observational checklists. They addressed multiple constructs, most commonly communication, heedful interrelating , respectful interactions, and shared explicit goals.

This study examines a health care system’s implementation of a broader set of automated primary care physician communication tools, including computerized medication reconciliation, and its impact on discharge medication errors. It found that implementation of automated health system–based tools, including computerized discharge medication reconciliation, decreased hospital discharge medication errors in medically complex patients.

Communicating findings of delayed diagnostic evaluation to primary care providers.
In this study, researchers examined the effectiveness of various communication strategies to inform primary care practitioners (PCPs) about the delayed follow-up of cancer-related abnormal or "red-flag" findings. They found that strategies (emails, phone calls, contacting clinic directors) to communicate to PCPs information on delayed follow-up of findings suspicious for cancer were useful, but not fail-safe.

Impact of an electronic alert notification system embedded in radiologists' workflow on closed-loop communication of critical results: a time series analysis.
The researchers evaluated the impact of a patient safety initiative with an alert notification system on reducing critical results lacking documented communication, and assessed potential overuse of the alerting system for communicating results. They found that a patient safety initiative with an alert notification system reduced the proportion of critical results among reports lacking documented communication between care providers.

Workarounds and test results follow-up in electronic health record-based primary care.
This study sought to understand why primary care practitioners use workarounds to manage test results by analyzing data from a previously conducted national cross-sectional survey on test result management. It concluded that workarounds to manage EHR-based test results are common, and their use results from unmet provider information management needs.

Communication and shared understanding between parents and resident-physicians at night.
The researchers studied communication breakdowns evidenced by lack of shared understanding between parents and night-team residents about the reason for admission and care plan. After conducting a prospective cohort study of 286 parents and 37 night-team senior residents, they found that parents and residents reported that they shared an understanding with one another about care plans in 86.0percent and 73.1 percent of cases, respectively.

Immunization data exchange with electronic health records.
The researchers assessed the impact of exchange of immunization information between an immunization information system (IIS) and an electronic health record on up-to-date rates, overimmunization, and immunization record completeness for low-income, urban children and adolescents. Their findings demonstrated that data exchange can improve child and adolescent immunization status.

Trends in news media coverage of mental illness in the United States: 1995-2014.
The authors studied the volume and content of a random sample of 400 news stories about mental illness from the period 1995-2014. They found that the most frequently-mentioned topic across the study period was violence, followed by stories about any type of treatment for mental illness while fewer news stories described successful treatment for or recovery from mental illness.

Patient-centered communication for discussing oncotype DX testing.
The researchers identified patient-centered communication strategies/gaps for discussing Oncotype DX testing (ODX) results. They applied a patient-centered communication framework to analyze qualitative interviews with oncologists about how they communicate about ODX with patients. Overall, providers discussed four patient-centered communication domains: exchanging information, assessing uncertainty, making decisions and cross-cutting themes.

Personal and professional challenges confronted by hospital staff following hurricane sandy: a qualitative assessment of management perspectives.
This qualitative study assessed the personal and professional challenges that affected staff decisions to report to work following a natural disaster and examined the role of management in addressing staff needs and concerns. Results indicated that staff encountered several barriers in the initial post-Sandy period including transportation problems, personal property damage, and communication issues.

Agenda-setting revisited: when and how do primary-care physicians solicit patients' additional concerns?
The authors assessed the distribution, content, and effectiveness of physicians' post-chief-complaint, agenda-setting questions. They found that physicians' questions designed to solicit concerns additional to chief concerns occurred in only 32% of visits. Further, those that were formatted so as to allow for 'concerns' were significantly more likely to generate some type of agenda item.

Contributions of relational coordination to care management in accountable care organizations: views of managerial and clinical leaders.
The researchers identified the extent to which accountable care organization (ACO) leaders are aware of the dimensions of relational coordination and the ways these leaders believe the dimensions influenced care management practices in their organization. They found that ACO leaders mentioned four relational coordination dimensions: shared goals, frequency of communication, timeliness of communication, and problem solving communication. Their analysis identified ways leaders believed the four dimensions contributed to the development of care management, including contributions to standardization of care, patient engagement, coordination of care, and care planning.

Criminal activity or treatable health condition? News media framing of opioid analgesic abuse in the United States, 1998-2012.
The authors conducted an analysis of the volume and content of news media coverage of opioid analgesic abuse over a 15-year period from 1998 to 2012. They found that news media more often frame the problem as a criminal justice issue, rather than a public health crisis. The most frequently mentioned cause of the problem was illegal drug dealing, and the most frequently mentioned solutions were law enforcement solutions. Prevention-oriented approaches were mentioned more frequently in the latter years of the study period, but few of the news stories overall mentioned expanding substance abuse treatment, and even fewer mentioned expanding access to evidence-based medication-assisted treatments.
