Pediatric Rheumatology Care and Outcomes Improvement Network's quality measure set to improve care of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
The objective of this study was to describe the selection, development, and implementation of quality measures for juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) by the Pediatric Rheumatology Care and Outcomes Improvement Network (PR-COIN), a multihospital learning health network. Clinicians in PR-COIN and parents of children with JIA collaboratively selected outcome quality measures and a committee of rheumatologists and data analysts developed operational definitions. Initial measures were clinical inactive disease, low pain score, and optimal physical functioning; the revised set included additional measures of disease activity, data quality, and a balancing measure. The authors concluded that PR-COIN's set of JIA quality measures is the first comprehensive set used at the point-of-care for a large cohort of JIA patients in a variety of pediatric rheumatology practice settings.

Three quality improvement initiatives and performance of rheumatoid arthritis disease activity measures in electronic health records: results from an interrupted time series study.
This study evaluated the effect of 3 HIT initiatives on the performance of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease activity measures and outcomes in an academic rheumatology clinic. The three initiatives implemented to facilitate performance of the Clinical Disease Activity Index (CDAI) were: 1) an EHR flowsheet to input scores, 2) peer performance reports, and 3) an EHR Smartform including a CDAI calculator. Data from 995 patients with 8,040 encounters between 2012 and 2017 was included. Electronic capture of CDAI scores increased from 0% to 64%. Peer performance reporting and the SmartForm kept performance stable. Physician satisfaction increased after SmartForm implementation.

Barriers to adherence in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: a multicenter collaborative experience and preliminary results.
The purpose of our study was to design and implement a standardized approach to identifying adherence barriers for youth with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and to assess the frequency of adherence barriers in patients and their caregivers across treatment modalities. It concluded that implementing a standardized tool assessing adherence barriers in the JIA population across multiple clinical settings is feasible.

Leveraging the electronic health record to improve quality and safety in rheumatology.
In the coming years, developing and leveraging tools within the electronic health record (EHR) will be the key to making the next big strides in improving the health of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other rheumatic diseases, including building EHR infrastructure to capture patient outcomes and developing automated methods to retrieve information from free text of clinical notes.

Rheumatology informatics system for effectiveness: a national informatics-enabled registry for quality improvement.
The authors reported on the Rheumatology Informatics System for Effectiveness (RISE) registry's architecture and initial data and demonstrated how RISE is being used to improve care quality. They concluded that RISE provides critical infrastructure for improving care quality in rheumatology and is a unique data source to generate new knowledge.
