Mind the gaps: clinical trial concepts to address unanswered questions in aeroallergen immunotherapy-an NIAID/AHRQ workshop.
A joint AHRQ and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAAD) workshop was held to develop trial concepts that could improve the use and effectiveness of aeroallergen immunotherapy (AAIT). Four different expert groups were formed to propose different study designs. These study designs would create clinical trials of long duration and would need highly characterized patient populations.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome measurement error. Potential effect on clinical study results.
This study investigated how the degree of variability in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) measurement commonly reported in clinical studies affects study power, the accuracy of treatment effect estimates, and the measured strength of risk factor associations. It found that lower reliability measurement of ARDS during patient enrollment in randomized controlled trials seriously degraded study power and effect size estimates of clinical studies.

Standardizing predicted body weight equations for mechanical ventilation tidal volume settings.
Predicted body weight (PBW) equations use height, age, and sex as input variables. The researchers compared National Institutes of Health (NIH) ARDS Network (ARDSNet), actuarial table (ACTUARIAL), and Stewart (STEWART) PBW equations used in clinical trials, across physiologic ranges for age and height. They concluded that significant differences between PBW equations for both men and women could be important sources of interstudy variation. Studies should adopt a standard PBW equation.
