Head Start's role in addressing food and nutrition insecurity: focus group findings.
The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of Head Start (HS) families' and employees' on family experiences with food and nutrition insecurity (FNI) and determine if and how HS addresses them. From August 2021 to January 2022, the researchers conducted 4 virtual focus groups with 27 HS employee and family participants. The study found that when addressing multilevel factors affecting FNI, HS's 2-generational method is useful for families. It was also determined that the role of the family advocate is critical. Finally, in addition to improving access to nutritious foods, skills and education to decrease generational unhealthy behaviors should be emphasized.

Ultra-processed food consumption and BMI-Z among children at risk for obesity from low-income households.
The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between baseline ultra-processed food consumption in early childhood and child BMI Z-score over 36 months. Among 595 children, median baseline age was 4.3 years, 65.4% had normal weight, 33.8% were overweight, and 0.8% were obese. When compared with low ultra-processed consumption (300 kcals/day), High ultra-processed intake (1300 kcals/day) was related with a 1.2 higher BMI-Z at 36 months for 3-year-olds and a 0.6 higher BMI-Z for 4-year-olds. The difference was not statistically significant for 5-year-olds or overall.

Total added sugar consumption is not significantly associated with risk for prediabetes among U.S. adults: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2013-2018.
This study examined if total grams/day and percent intakes of <10%, 10-15%, or >15% added sugar increase the odds for prediabetes in U.S. adults. A cross-sectional secondary analysis of 2013-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data was conducted. The study included data from adults ≥ 20 years with normoglycemia (N = 2,154) and prediabetes (N = 3,152) with 1-2 days of dietary recall information. The National Cancer Institute Method was used to estimate odds ratios of prediabetes based on usual intakes of added sugar (total and percent intakes). Total energy intake of the sample from added sugar was 13.9%. Total and percent intakes of added sugar and adjusted intakes were not significantly associated with an increased odds of prediabetes. Prediabetes did not differ by race/ethnicity or percent of added sugar intakes.

Dietary intake correlated to waist-to-hip ratio in patients on maintenance hemodialysis.
Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing regular hemodialysis (RHD) are susceptible to protein-energy malnutrition (PEM). Insufficient dietary consumption and changes in body measurements are among the diagnostic criteria for PEM. The purpose of this study was to measure the adherence of ESRD patients on RHD to the 2020 National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative (NKF-KDOQI) recommendations for nutritional sufficiency during a dialysis day (DD) and analyze the association between dietary energy (DEI) and protein (DPI) intake and body measurements. The study utilized a secondary review of clinical and demographic data from 142 adults in the Rutgers Nutrition and Kidney Disease database. The correlations between DEI, DPI, and body measurements such as body mass index (BMI), BMI classification, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were evaluated. The study found that the median age of the participants was 55.7 years, with 58% being male and 83.8% identifying as Black/African American. The median time spent on dialysis was 42.0 months (approximately 3.5 years). Seventy-five percent of the participants were classified as overweight or obese. The WHR was 1.0 ± 0.8 cm for males and 0.9 ± 0.1 cm for females. Neither DEI nor DPI on a DD complied with the NKF-KDOQI 2020 recommendations. The median DEI was 17.6 ± 8.4 kcal/kg, and DPI was 0.7 ± 0.4 g/kg. Significant positive correlations were found between DEI and DPI and WHR for the entire sample. In females, a significant positive correlation emerged between DPI and WHR. The researchers concluded that the nutritional consumption of ESRD patients undergoing RHD falls short of the NKF-KDOQI 2020 guidelines on a DD.

SNAP participation and emergency department use.
The objectives of this study were to examine whether Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation is associated with emergency department use among low-income children, and whether any such association is mediated by household food hardship and child health status and/or moderated by special health care needs (SHCN) status. Researched pooled cross-sectional samples of children in low-income households from 2016-19 National Survey of Children's Health. SNAP participation was found to be associated with lower likelihoods of emergency department use. The researchers concluded that food hardship relief may improve outcomes for vulnerable children as well as the health systems that serve them.

Pharmacologic and dietary treatments for epilepsies in children aged 1-36 months: a systematic review.
The purpose of this systematic review study was to assess the effectiveness and harms of pharmacologic and dietary treatments for epilepsy in children aged 1-36 months without infantile spasms. The researchers searched EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library for studies published from 1/1/1999 to 8/19/21 to identify studies reporting data on children aged 1-36 months receiving pharmacologic or dietary treatments for epilepsy. Twenty-three studies met the inclusion criteria. The study found that Levetiracetam leads to seizure freedom in some infants but the data on 6 other medications (lamotrigine, phenytoin, rufinamide, stiripentol, topiramate, and vigabatrin) were too limited to allow conclusions about their effectiveness. Three medications (lamotrigine, levetiracetam, and topiramate) were rarely discontinued due to adverse effects, and severe events were also rare. In the category of diets, the ketogenic diet lead to seizure freedom in some infants and both the ketogenic diet and modified Atkins diet reduced average seizure frequency.

Associations of maternal consumption of sugary beverages in pregnancy with infant weight status.
Researchers studied mother-infant dyads from a prospective cohort study in order to examine links between maternal consumption of 100% juice and sugar-sweetened beverages in the third trimester of pregnancy with infant weight status at 6 and 12 months. 100% juice consumption was found to be associated with higher infant weight-for-length at 6 months and higher odds of rapid infant weight gain from birth to 6 months and birth to 12 months. 100% juice consumption was not associated with weight-for-length at 12 months and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption was not associated with any of the outcome measures.

Reliability and validity of assigning ultraprocessed food categories to 24-h dietary recall data.
The objective of this study was to test the reliability and validity of training coders and assigning Nova categories to individual foods collected via 24-hour dietary recalls. The Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR) software was used to collect 2-3 dietary recalls at baseline and annually for 3 years. Over 3000 unique foods were categorized. This method of Nova classifying NDSR-based 24-hour dietary recalls was found to be reliable and valid for identifying individual intake of processed foods.

Beyond the dinner table: who's having breakfast, lunch and dinner family meals and which meals are associated with better diet quality and BMI in pre-school children?.
This study examined the frequency of eating breakfast, lunch or dinner family meals and associations with pre-school children's overall diet quality and BMI percentile. The authors concluded that breakfast family meal frequency and total weekly family meal frequency were associated with healthier diet quality in non-Hispanic pre-school children but not in Hispanic children. Longitudinal research is needed to clarify the association between family meal type and child diet quality and BMI percentile.

Knowledge of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome among general pediatricians.
In this study, investigators examined knowledge of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome among general pediatricians. They created a 32-question survey, collecting information regarding participants’ experience with FPIES and knowledge of FPIES diagnosis and management. Investigators found that many pediatricians had a basic but incomplete understanding of FPIES diagnosis and initial management.

Perceived barriers and facilitators to healthy eating and school lunch meals among adolescents: a qualitative study.
The researchers explored how perceived barriers and facilitators influence healthy eating and investigated the acceptability of changes to school lunch meals among adolescents after implementation of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Their findings suggest the need to measure perceived and actual barriers to healthy eating among adolescents and to examine the effect of these barriers on dietary behavior.

Trends in provider management of patients with food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome.
Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy. This study sought to better understand provider-level variation in FPIES knowledge and management. It found that nearly one-third of respondents reported poor familiarity with FPIES. Considerable variation exists in the use of diagnostic tests, management, and choice of "safe" nutrition, indicating a strong need for FPIES practice guidelines.

LEAPing through the looking glass: secondary analysis of the effect of skin test size and age of introduction on peanut tolerance after early peanut introduction.
This study explored relationships between peanut tolerance, baseline peanut/egg sensitization, eczema severity/duration, age of introduction, gender, and race. It concluded that increasing peanut wheal size predicted peanut tolerance only in the avoidance arm. Peanut introduction between 6 and 11 months of age was associated with the highest rates of peanut tolerance, questioning the 'urgency' of introduction before 6 months.

Milk options observation (MOO): a mixed-methods study of chocolate milk removal on beverage consumption and student/staff behaviors in a rural elementary school.
The researchers conducted a study of flavored milk removal at a rural primary school between May and June 2012. They measured beverage selection/consumption pre- and post-chocolate milk removal and collected observation field notes. Their conclusion was that removing flavored milk from school-provided lunches may lower students' daily added sugar consumption without considerably decreasing calcium and protein intake and may promote healthy weight.

Factors contributing to food insecurity among women living with HIV in the Dominican Republic: a qualitative study.
The researchers examined factors contributing to food insecurity among women living with HIV (WLHIV) in the Dominican Republic (DR). Respondents identified economic instability as the primary driver of food insecurity, precipitated by enacted stigma in the labor and social domains. Women described experiences of HIV-related labor discrimination in formal and informal sectors.

Behavioral counseling to promote a healthful diet and physical activity for cardiovascular disease prevention in adults without known cardiovascular disease risk factors: updated evidence report and systematic review for the USPSTF
The researchers systematically reviewed the evidence on the benefits and harms of behavioral counseling for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in adults without known cardiovascular risk factors to inform the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). Diet and physical activity behavioral interventions were found to result in consistent modest benefits across a variety of important intermediate health outcomes across 6 to 12 months, including blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein and total cholesterol levels, and adiposity.

Psychometric evaluation of the youth eating disorder examination questionnaire in children with overweight or obesity.
This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Youth Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (YEDE-Q) and its utility for detecting loss of control (LOC) eating . It concluded that the YEDE-Q may not have utility as a screener for identifying true cases of LOC eating among school-age children with overweight or obesity.

Nutritional and dietary interventions for autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of dietary interventions or nutritional supplements in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Since the studies reviewed were small and short-term, and there were few fully categorized populations or concomitant interventions, the researchers concluded that there is little evidence to support the use of nutritional supplements or dietary therapies for children with ASD.

Tummytrials: a feasibility study of using self-experimentation to detect individualized food triggers.
The researchers designed, developed, and evaluated a mobile app that applies a self experimentation framework to support patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in identifying their personal food triggers. In examining the feasibility of this approach in a field study with 15 IBS patients, they found that participants could use the tool to reliably undergo a self-experiment.

When personal tracking becomes social: examining the use of Instagram for healthy eating.
The researchers aimed to inform the design of tools to support healthy behaviors by understanding how people appropriate Instagram to track and share food data, the benefits they obtain from doing so, and the challenges they encounter. Characteristics of tree nut challenges in tree nut allergic and tree nut sensitized individuals.
The purpose of this study was to determine the relation between tree nut (TN) sensitization levels and oral food challenges (OFC) outcomes. The investigators concluded that TN challenges were frequently passed in patients with TN sensitization with or without a history of TN reactivity despite a TN SPT wheal of at least 3 mm or a TN sIgE level of at least 2 kUA/L. Nearly all patients with peanut allergy and TN co-sensitization passed the TN challenge, questioning the clinical relevance of "co-allergy."

Early solid food introduction: role in food allergy prevention and implications for breastfeeding.
The authors explore the evidence suggesting that introduction of solid foods before age 6 months might reduce the risk of food allergy. In addition, they review the possible implications of earlier solid food introduction on both the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding and the total duration of breastfeeding. Finally, they argue that harmonization of early introduction guidelines with breastfeeding guidelines is needed to maximize the benefits of both exclusive breastfeeding and early complementary food introduction

Meals enhancing nutrition after discharge: findings from a pilot randomized controlled trial.
This pilot study's objective was to evaluate the feasibility of conducting a randomized controlled trial assessing a post-discharge home-delivered meal program's impact on older adults' nutritional intake and hospital readmissions and to assess patient acceptability and satisfaction with the program. It found that participants were overwhelmingly satisfied (82 percent to 100 percent satisfied or very satisfied) with staff performance, meal quality, and delivery processes.

The high and rising costs of obesity to the US health care system.
The purpose of this editorial is to provide new information on the medical care costs of obesity that help motivate various weight loss interventions. The editorial is a part of a special issue with articles examining behavioral, pharmacotherapy, and surgical interventions for weight loss, based on a 2016 conference on state-of-the-art weight management hosted by the Veterans Health Administration.

Advocacy coalitions involved in California's menu labeling policy debate: exploring coalition structure, policy beliefs, resources, and strategies.
Researchers used a qualitative research approach to identify coalition members and explore their expressed beliefs and policy arguments, resources, and strategies. The structure and composition of each coalition varied. Public health (PH) coalition leadership and membership notably increased compared to the industry coalition. The PH coalition promoted a clear and consistent message around informed decision making. The industry coalition, led by a state restaurant association, responded with cost and implementation arguments.
