Rates and consequences of posttraumatic distress among American Indian adults with type 2 diabetes.
This study examined the prevalence of screened posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated diabetes-related outcomes. It found that when grouped by mental health conditions (neither screened PTSD nor depressive symptoms, screened PTSD only, depressive symptoms only, and both), those with both screened PTSD and depressive symptoms reported the highest proportion of any past month hyperglycemia, past year hospitalization, and low self-rated health status.

Measuring geographic "hot spots" of racial/ethnic disparities: an application to mental health care.
The researchers identified geographic "hot spots" of racial/ethnic disparities in mental health care access. They identified these "hot spots": Richmond, Virginia, and Columbus, Georgia, for Black-White disparities; Fresno, California, and Dallas, Texas, for Latino-White disparities; and Riverside, California, and Houston, Texas, for Asian-White mental health care disparities. They discussed the potential and limitations of these methods as tools for understanding health care disparities in other contexts.

Training community-based primary care physicians in the screening and management of mental health disorders among Latino primary care patients.
The researchers evaluated a quality improvement intervention to improve the screening and management (e.g., referral to psychiatric care) of common mental disorders in small independent Latino primary care practices. They concluded that improving the quality of mental health care in low-resourced primary care settings may require academic detailing and consultation/liaison psychiatric intervention supplemented with staff outreach to achieve meaningful improvement in the processes of care.
