Breastfeeding is associated with lower likelihood of Helicobacter pylori colonization in babies, based on a prospective USA maternal-infant cohort.
The authors evaluated maternal and baby factors associated with likelihood of H. pylori colonization in the babies. They found that H. pylori prevalence was 31.8% in mothers and 19.7% in their babies. Dominant breastfeeding and maternal IBD were associated with significantly lower likelihood of H. pylori colonization among babies; no other clinical factors were associated with H. pylori colonization in the babies. They concluded that dominant breastfeeding may protect against early H. pylori colonization.

Geographic access to international board-certified lactation consultants in Pennsylvania.
The goals of this study were to assess geographic access to international board-certified lactation consultants in Pennsylvania, to compare access in rural vs. urban counties, and to compare access by county-level breastfeeding initiation rates. Researchers used geographic information systems methodology and a cross-sectional observational design to calculate the proportion of all young children, children in urban and rural counties, children in counties with low, medium, and high breastfeeding initiation rates who lived within specific distances of board-certified lactation consultants in Pennsylvania. Comparisons were made to answer the research goals. While the results indicate that most Pennsylvania children live in proximity to a board-certified lactation consultant, a lower percentage of children in rural counties and in counties with lower breastfeeding rates do.

Early solid food introduction: role in food allergy prevention and implications for breastfeeding.
The authors explore the evidence suggesting that introduction of solid foods before age 6 months might reduce the risk of food allergy. In addition, they review the possible implications of earlier solid food introduction on both the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding and the total duration of breastfeeding. Finally, they argue that harmonization of early introduction guidelines with breastfeeding guidelines is needed to maximize the benefits of both exclusive breastfeeding and early complementary food introduction

Having your cake and EATing it too: early timing of multiple allergen introduction does not increase the risk of developing food allergy in standard risk, breastfed infants.
This study sought to determine if there is a protective association between early allergen introduction and a reduced risk of developing food allergy in high-risk infants, but not in standard-risk children. Overall, it found no difference in the rate of food allergy development with introduction of potentially allergenic solids at 3 vs 6 months.

Treatment of ankyloglossia and breastfeeding outcomes: a systematic review.
This systematic review of literature on surgical and nonsurgical treatments for infants with ankyloglossia, a condition restricting tongue mobility in infants, found that frenotomy may be associated with mother-reported improvements in breastfeeding, and potentially in nipple pain. Since the existing studies are small and short-term with inconsistent methodology, the strength of the evidence is low to insufficient.
