Behavioral counseling and pharmacotherapy interventions for tobacco cessation in adults, including pregnant women: a review of reviews for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.
The researchers reviewed the effectiveness and safety of pharmacotherapy and behavioral interventions for tobacco cessation. They concluded that behavioral and pharmacotherapy interventions improve rates of smoking cessation among the general adult population, alone or in combination. Data on the effectiveness and safety of electronic nicotine delivery systems are limited.

Comparing clinical and economic outcomes of biologic and conventional medications in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.
This study compared clinical and economic outcomes between teriparatide (monthly costs $1120) and bisphosphonates (monthly costs $14) among postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. It found that teriparatide users had higher risk of fracture and higher costs, compared with similar bisphosphonates users. The hazard ratios of fracture for teriparatide relative to bisphosphonates ranged from 1.37 to 2.12, depending on methods.

Incidence of opioid-managed pelvic pain after hysteroscopic sterilization versus laparoscopic sterilization, US 2005-2012.
The researchers compared the incidence of opioid-managed pelvic pain within 12 months after hysteroscopic and laparoscopic sterilization. They found that among women without recent history of childbirth, there was no compelling evidence of a clinically meaningful increase in the incidence of pelvic pain requiring opioids during the year after hysteroscopic sterilization.

Association of adverse pregnancy outcomes with glyburide vs insulin in women with gestational diabetes.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes among women receiving glyburide compared with insulin for the treatment of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in a US population-based cohort. It found an association between glyburide (compared with insulin) and elevated risk of NICU admission, neonatal hypoglycemia, respiratory distress, birth injury, and large for gestational age in women with GDM.

Use of medical, surgical and complementary treatments among women with fibroids.
This study examined the use of medical management, uterus-preserving surgery, and complementary treatments among women with uterine fibroids. It found that uterus-preserving fibroid surgery is effective, but many symptomatic women can be successfully treated with nonsurgical management, including complementary and alternative therapy.

Prescription of antihypertensive medications during pregnancy in the UK.
The authors aimed to describe the management of antihypertensive medications in pregnancy by general practitioners in the UK and compare it with current guidelines. Using electronic medical records from The Health Improvement Network database, they found that, in this population of UK pregnant women, prescription patterns of antihypertensive medications were dominated by recommended treatments, although some patients continued on contraindicated drugs throughout pregnancy or switched to preferred agents in a delayed fashion.

Trends in glyburide compared with insulin use for gestational diabetes treatment in the United States, 2000-2011.
The researchers sought to characterize pharmacologic treatment of women with gestational diabetes (GDM) by describing trends in the use of glyburide compared with insulin over the past decade (2000-2011) and identifying predictors of initial choice of pharmacotherapy. They found that glyburide has replaced insulin as the more common pharmacotherapy for GDM among those privately insured.

Are Food and Drug Administration prescription drug safety plans working? A case study of isotretinoin.
The authors comment on a case study analyzing pharmacy claims in order to examine the impact of the iPledge program (an FDA restricted distribution plan that included electronic registration of patients, physicians, and pharmacists plus monitoring of contraceptive use) on contraceptive use for women of childbearing age taking isotretinoin (Accutane). This drug, used for acute acne, could affect fetal development. The limited effectiveness of the program shows the difficulty of changing patient behavior.
