Use of hematopoietic growth factors and risk of thromboembolic and pulmonary toxicities in elderly patients with advanced ovarian cancer.
This study evaluated the risk of thromboembolic and pulmonary toxicities associated with hematopoietic growth factor (HGF) use (i.e., erythropoietin-stimulating agent [ESA] and/or colony-stimulating factor [CSF]) in a community-dwelling cohort of elderly patients with advanced ovarian cancer. An increased risk of thromboembolic events was observed in elderly patients with ovarian cancer who received ESA + CSF.

Fracture prediction with modified-FRAX in older HIV-infected and uninfected men.
The authors investigated considering HIV as a cause of secondary osteoporosis when calculating FRAX, a clinical fracture risk calculator, in HIV-infected individuals. They found that modified-FRAX underestimated the fracture rates more in older HIV-infected than in otherwise similar uninfected men. and they recommend further studies to determine how to risk stratify for screening and treatment in older HIV-infected individuals.

Colonoscopy and risk of infective endocarditis in the elderly.
The authors estimated the risk of infective endocarditis (IE) after colonoscopy in individuals aged 70 to 79 without a history of colorectal cancer (CRC), endocarditis, or colectomy from a random 20% sample of Medicare beneficiaries. Their findings suggest that individuals without risk factors for IE and those without gastrointestinal symptoms did not have an elevated IE risk after colonoscopy. However, they found a modestly increased risk among individuals with risk factors for IE who undergo a polypectomy or a biopsy during a colonoscopy following recent symptoms.

Combinations of chronic conditions, functional limitations, and geriatric syndromes that predict health outcomes.
The researchers aimed to identify combinations of chronic conditions, functional limitations, and geriatric syndromes that predict poor health outcomes. They found that functional limitations and/or geriatric syndromes were the most prominent conditions in predicting health outcomes. They concluded that accounting for chronic conditions alone may be less informative than also accounting for the co-occurrence of functional limitations and geriatric syndromes, as the latter conditions appear to drive health outcomes in older individuals.

Outcomes of patients discharged to skilled nursing facilities after acute care hospitalizations.
This study evaluated previously independent older patients discharged to skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and identified risk factors for failure to return home and death and development of a predictive tool to determine likelihood of adverse outcome. It found that a large proportion of older patients discharging to SNFs never return home.

Predictors of 30-day readmission following inpatient rehabilitation for patients at high risk for hospital readmission.
The purpose of this study was to identify variables in the full administrative medical record, particularly in regard to physical function, that could help clinicians further discriminate between patients who are and are not likely to be readmitted to an acute care hospital within 30 days of rehabilitation discharge. It found that functional outcomes and rehabilitation length of stay were the best predictors of 30-day rehospitalization.
