Implementation of patient-reported outcome measures in U.S. total joint replacement registries: rationale, status, and plans.
The authors report on the status of patient-reported outcomes (PRO) implementation as well as perceived barriers and facilitators of PRO use among five U.S. total joint replacement registries. They find that the current stage of implementation of patient-reported outcomes measures varies widely among U.S. registries.

Increasing obesity and comorbidity in patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty in the U.S.: a 13-year study of time trends.
The researchers examined the time-trends in key demographic and clinical characteristics of patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). They found that obesity, medical and psychological comorbidity increased and the underlying diagnosis of RA/inflammatory arthritis decreased rapidly in primary THA patients over 13-years.

Conditional survival in patients with thyroid cancer.
This study used data from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry to determine conditional 5-year disease-specific survival based on patient age, gender, and stage. It found that patients with localized thyroid cancer have excellent conditional 5-year survival, irrespective of where they are in their survivorship phase. In addition, patients with regional thyroid cancer have relatively stable conditional 5-year survival.

Linkage of a de-identified United States rheumatoid arthritis registry with administrative data to facilitate comparative effectiveness research.
In order to address a gap in linkage methodology, the researchers sought to link a large, de-identified outpatient registry of patients with rheumatoid arthritis with national Medicare administrative claims data. The purpose of their report was to describe the methods and validity of this linkage.

Organ donation knowledge, willingness, and beliefs of motor vehicle clerks.
This study assessed the donation knowledge, willingness, and beliefs of MV clerks and their association with demographic characteristics. It found that most clerks believed that people should register as organ donors. Whites and already registered donors were more likely than minorities and nonregistered clerks to believe others should register as donors.

An instrumental variable approach finds no associated harm or benefit with early dialysis initiation in the United States.
The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at dialysis initiation has been rising. This study described geographic variation in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at dialysis initiation and determine its association with mortality. It found no associated harm or benefit with early dialysis initiation in the United States.

Joint replacement registries in the United States: a new paradigm.
This commentary serves as an introduction to an upcoming series of articles about orthopaedic registries, in general, with an emphasis on lessons learned from the evolving U.S. and international total joint replacement registries. Specifically, this paper provides an overview of total joint replacement registries and the current expansion of data collection beyond implant attributes and survival to include postoperative complications and patient-reported outcomes.

Temporal trends in patient characteristics and outcomes among Medicare beneficiaries undergoing primary prevention implantable cardioverter-defibrillator placement in the United States, 2006-2010.
Results from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry's Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Registry. This study characterizing trends in clinical profiles and outcomes among Medicare patients undergoing primary implantable cardioverter-defibrillator implantation found only modest changes in clinical characteristics between 2006 and 2010. However, 6-month mortality and rehospitalization improved significantly over time, suggesting that there were meaningful improvements.

Influence of healthy candidate bias in assessing clinical effectiveness for implantable cardioverter-defibrillators: cohort study of older patients with heart failure.
This study assessed the potential contribution of unmeasured general health status to patient selection in assessments of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy. In a group of heart failure patients, those who received ICD therapy were younger and had lower ejection fraction and more cardiac admissions to hospital but fewer non-cardiac admissions. The lower risks of measured outcomes likely reflect unmeasured differences in comorbidity and frailty.

Validity of deterministic record linkage using multiple indirect personal identifiers: linking a large registry to claims data.
The researchers compared the validity of several deterministic record linkage methods with multiple indirect identifiers by using data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) registry and administrative Medicare inpatient claims data. Linkage rules using 2 or 3 indirect, patient-level identifiers and hospital ID produced linkages with sensitivity of 95% and specificity of 98% compared with a gold standard linkage rule.

Physician practices regarding contraindications to oral anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation: findings from the Outcomes Registry for Better Informed Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (ORBIT-AF) registry.
This study describes the frequencies of and factors associated with oral anticoagulation (OAC) contraindications in clinical practice for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Contraindications to OAC therapy among patients with AF are common but subjective. Many patients with reported contraindications were receiving OAC, suggesting that the perceived benefits outweighed the potential harm posed by the relative contraindication.

Site-level variance for adverse tracheal intubation-associated events across 15 North American PICUs: a report from the national emergency airway registry for children*.
This observational study of 15 pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) found that substantial site-level variance exists in tracheal intubation practice, adverse tracheal intubation associated-events and severe tracheal intubation associated-events. After adjusting for patient and provider characteristics, neither PICU size nor presence of fellowship training program explained site-level variance.

Prescribing warfarin at discharge for heart failure patients: findings from the Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure Registry
The researchers used data from a heart failure (HF) registry to determine the prevalence and variation, as well as patient characteristics, in warfarin prescription among real-world HF population. They found that warfarin was prescribed at discharge for more than 1 out of 10 patients hospitalized for HF without evident indications or contraindications for anticoagulation.

It's up to you: a multi-message, phased driver facility campaign to increase organ donation registration rates in Illinois.
This project applied successful strategies previously employed in driver facility campaigns to examine whether these strategies would be effective in growing a registry where the majority of individuals have already had the opportunity to register as an organ donor. In facilities with historically high and low registration percentages, these strategies resulted in higher organ donor registration rates, compared with control facilities.

Effect of including cancer-specific variables on models examining short-term outcomes.
The objectives of this paper were 1) to examine differences between existing American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) variables and cancer registry variables, and 2) to determine whether the addition of cancer-specific variables improves modeling of short-term outcomes. The researchers found that, although advanced disease stage and neoadjuvant therapy variables were predictors of short-term outcomes, their inclusion did not improve the models.

A method for probing disease relatedness using common clinical eligibility criteria.
The researchers explored the feasibility of using disease-specific common eligibility features (CEFs) for representing diseases and understanding their relatedness. They constructed disease-specific CEF networks to assess the degree of overlap among three types of diseases. Using these automatically derived networks, they were able to highlight connections among schizophrenia, epilepsy and depression. This finding and similar observations confirm the value of using clinical trial eligibility criteria for identifying disease relatedness.
