Structured clinical documentation to improve quality and support practice-based research in headache.
The authors developed a proprietary toolkit to aid clinicians when creating clinical documentation in electronic medical records (EMRs). This toolkit will help clinicians provide discrete data and not unstructured free text which many clinicians enter into the EMR. The toolkit collects hundreds of fields of data and interprets score tests for a number of difference assessment tools for anxiety disorder, depression, migraine disability, and insomnia. The toolkit was used at 4346 initial patient visits as of April 1, 2018. The toolkit is being shared with other clinics as part of the Neurology Practice-Based Research Network.

Helping basic scientists engage with community partners to enrich and accelerate translational research.
In 2009, The Rockefeller University Center for Clinical and Translational Science partnered with Clinical Directors Network, a practice-based research network (PBRN), to create a community-engaged research navigation (CEnR-Nav) program to foster research pairing basic science and community-driven scientific aims. The program is led by an academic navigator and a PBRN navigator. This paper reports on its activities.

Facilitative components of collaborative learning: A review of nine health research networks.
This paper explored the characteristics and collaborative learning approaches of nine health research networks. It found that face-to-face meetings, intentional facilitation and communication, shared vision, trust among members and willingness to work together were key facilitators of collaborative learning. Competing priorities for members, limited funding and lack of long-term support and geographic dispersion were the main barriers to coordination and collaboration across research network members.

Differences in prevalence of community-associated MRSA and MSSA among U.S. and non-U.S. born populations in six New York community health centers.
As part of a research collaborative, 6 New York City-area community health centers recruited patients with Skin and Soft Tissue Infections (SSTIs). This study found that although not statistically significant, immigrants had lower rates of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections than did native-born participants, and immigrants showed significantly higher rates of Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) wound cultures.

Practice-based research networks (PBRNs) bridging the gaps between communities, funders, and policymakers.
In this commentary, the authors propose that practice-based research networks (PBRNs) engage with funders and policymakers by applying the same engagement strategies they have successfully used to build relationships with community stakeholders. A community engagement approach to achieve new funding streams for PBRNs should include a strategy to engage key stakeholders from the communities of funders, thought leaders, and policymakers using collaborative principles and methods.

A needs assessment of unused and expired medication disposal practices: a study from the Medication Safety Research Network of Indiana.
The investigators sought to describe the extent of the unused and expired medication (UEM) issue in Indiana, identify patient beliefs about UEM, and determine any association between those beliefs and various personal and demographic characteristics. They concluded that there remains a need for more disposal locations for both non-controlled and controlled medication.

Stakeholder engagement in a patient-reported outcomes (PRO) measure implementation: a report from the SAFTINet Practice-based Research Network (PBRN).
The objective is to demonstrate the use of stakeholder engagement in implementation of patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures. It concluded that stakeholder engagement appeared useful for promoting PRO measure implementation in clinical practice, in a way that met the needs of both researchers and clinical practice stakeholders.

Team science approach to developing consensus on research good practices for practice-based research networks: A case study.
Using peer learning strategies, seven experienced practice-based research networks (PBRNs) working in collaborative teams articulated procedures for PBRN Research Good Practices (PRGPs). The PRGPs is a PBRN-specific resource to facilitate PBRN management and staff training, to promote adherence to study protocols, and to increase validity and generalizability of study findings. This paper describes the team science processes which culminated in the PRGPs.

Community pharmacist participation in a practice-based research network: a report from the Medication Safety Research Network of Indiana (Rx-SafeNet).
The researchers described the experiences and opinions of pharmacists serving as site coordinators for the Medication Safety Research Network of Indiana (Rx-SafeNet). In general, Rx-SafeNet site coordinators appeared to experience increased confidence in research engagement after joining the network. While respondents identified a number of benefits associated with network participation, concerns about potential time constraints remained a key barrier to participation.

Pragmatic cluster randomized trials using covariate constrained randomization: a method for Practice-based Research Networks (PBRNs).
This study used covariate constrained randomization with data on relevant variables before randomization was used to achieve balanced study arms in 2 pragmatic cluster randomized trials (CRTs). It found that covariate constrained randomization, which restricts the full randomization set to a subset in which differences between study arms are minimized, is a useful tool for achieving balanced study arms in CRTs.

Leveraging practice-based research networks to accelerate implementation and diffusion of chronic kidney disease guidelines in primary care practices: a prospective cohort study.
This study was conducted to determine whether practice-based research networks (PBRNs) could increase dissemination, implementation, and diffusion of evidence-based treatment guidelines for chronic kidney disease by leveraging early adopter practices. After the intervention, the initial four PBRNs increased the use of ACEIs/ARBs, discontinuation of NSAIDs, testing for anemia, and testing and/or treatment for vitamin D deficiency. Most were able to recruit two additional practices, which also increased their use of ACEIs/ARBs and testing and/or treatment of vitamin D deficiency. The researchers concluded that, with some assistance, early adopter practices can facilitate the diffusion of evidence-based approaches to other practices.

Praxis-based research networks: an emerging paradigm for research that is rigorous, relevant, and inclusive.
The authors argue that praxis-based research networks (PBRNs) are dynamically evolving to meet the needs of communities by partnering to generate new knowledge that can benefit community and population health. Furthermore, the praxis-based research network model facilitates adaptive partnering and provides a learning mechanism that enables the formation of new collaborations while remaining true to the core values of PBRNs.

Using geographic information systems (GIS) to identify communities in need of health insurance outreach: an OCHIN practice-based research network (PBRN) report.
The researchers sought an understandable way to use electronic health record (EHR) data to locate uninsured patients. Through the use of maps, they found geographic variation in insurance rates of patients seeking care in OCHIN PBRN clinics, with insurance rates varying by age. They then identified appropriate OCHIN PBRN clinics for dissemination of an EHR-based insurance outreach intervention.
