Complications, revision fusions, readmissions, and utilization over a 1-year period after bone morphogenetic protein use during primary cervical spine fusions.
The authors sought to determine the 1-year risk of complications, cervical revision fusions, hospital readmissions, and health care services utilization after bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) use with cervical spine fusions. They found that patients receiving BMP were 29% more likely to have a complication and a nervous system complication; cervical revision fusions were more likely among patients receiving BMP; the risk of 30-day readmission was greater with BMP use; and readmission occurred 27.4% sooner on an average. Additionally, patients receiving BMP were more likely to receive computed tomography scans and epidurals with anterior surgical approaches.

Management of persistent pain in the older patient: a clinical review.
The purpose of this study was to 1.) Describe barriers to the management of persistent pain among older adults; 2.) Summarize current management approaches, including pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic modalities; 3.) Present rehabilitative approaches; and 4.) Highlight aspects of the patient-physician relationship that can help to improve treatment outcomes.

Adjuvant chemotherapy for stage II right-sided and left-sided colon cancer: analysis of SEER-medicare data.
The researchers examined the relationship between adjuvant chemotherapy and overall 5-year mortality for stage II colon cancer by location (right- vs. left-side) as a surrogate for microsatellite instability which is more common in right-sided cancers. They found that the chemotherapy did not improve survival for either right- or left-sided cancers.

Effect of adjunctive benzodiazepines on clinical outcomes in lithium- or quetiapine-treated outpatients with bipolar I or II disorder: results from the Bipolar CHOICE trial.
This study investigated the longer-term effects of adjunctive benzodiazepines on symptom response during treatment in patients with bipolar disorders. The investigators concluded that adjunctive benzodiazepines may not significantly affect clinical outcome in lithium- or quetiapine-treated patients with bipolar I or II disorder over 6 months, after controlling for potential confounding factors.

Effects of newly developed chemotherapy regimens, comorbidities, chemotherapy-related toxicities on the changing patterns of the leading causes of death in elderly patients with colorectal cancer.
This study examined the effects of newly developed chemotherapy regimens, comorbidities, and chemotherapy-related toxicities on the changing patterns of the leading causes of death in elderly patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). It found that the risks of CRC-specific death decreased with diagnostic time periods only in chemotherapy recipients.

Comparative effectiveness of infliximab and adalimumab for Crohn's disease.
This study compared the effectiveness of infliximab and adalimumab, the two most commonly used anti-tumor necrosis factor agents in patients with Crohn’s disease (CD). It found that both drugs were of similar effectiveness with respect to surgical rates, hospitalization rates, and the percentage of patients remaining on the drugs after 26 weeks.

Cost-effectiveness of treatment of diabetic macular edema.
The researchers sought to determine the cost-effectiveness of different treatments of diabetic macular edema (DME). They found that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors with or without laser treatment provide important health benefits with favorable cost-effectiveness, costing less per QALY gained than many accepted therapies.

Factors contributing to underuse of radiation among younger women with breast cancer.
This study explores factors associated with noncompliance of RT among insured young patients. It found that competing demands from child care, especially the presence of a young child in the home, can constitute a barrier to complete guideline-concordant breast cancer therapy.

Impact of specific glucose-control strategies on microvascular and macrovascular outcomes in 58,000 adults with type 2 diabetes.
This study used comparative effectiveness research methods to compare the effect of four distinct glucose-control strategies on subsequent myocardial infarction and nephropathy in type 2 diabetes. It found that in a large group of adults with type 2 diabetes, more aggressive glucose-control strategies have mixed short-term effects on microvascular complications and do not reduce the myocardial infarction rate over 4 years of follow-up.
