Safety and perioperative adverse events in pediatric endoscopic sinus surgery: an ACS-NSQIP-P analysis.
This study describes safety outcomes of pediatric endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) to identify risk factors for 30-day postoperative adverse events using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program-Pediatric (NSQIP-P) database. It concluded that urgent/emergent procedures carry the greatest risk of postoperative adverse events, and black children are significantly more likely to undergo higher acuity surgery than white children.

Quality improvement, implementation, and dissemination strategies to improve mental health care for children and adolescents: a systematic review.
The researchers describe the process by which they created an online interactive community resources map for use in the Connect for Health randomized controlled trial. The trial was conducted in the 6 pediatric practices that cared for the highest percentage of children with overweight or obesity. Parents and community partners identified several community resources that could help support behavior change.

Reducing hospitalization rates for children with anaphylaxis.
A quality improvement (QI) intervention was conducted to improve care and reduce hospitalization rates for children with anaphylaxis. This intervention was able to safely reduce unnecessary hospitalizations for children with anaphylaxis and sustain the change over 3 years by using a QI initiative that included evidence-based guideline development and implementation, reinforced by provider reminders and structured feedback.

A pediatric approach to ventilator-associated events surveillance.
The authors propose pediatric ventilator-associated conditions (VAC) for surveillance related to antimicrobial use, with pediatric possible ventilator-associated pneumonia (PVAP) as a subset of adult ventilator-associated conditions (AVAC). Studies on generalizability and responsiveness of these metrics to quality improvement initiatives are needed, as are studies to determine whether lower pediatric ventilator-associated event (VAE) rates are associated with improvements in other outcomes.

A new era in quality measurement: The development and application of quality measures.
Numerous national organizations focus on the development and application of quality measures, including the Pediatric Quality Measures Program, which is focused solely on the development and implementation of pediatric-specific measures. This policy statement provides an overview of quality measurement and describes the opportunities for pediatric health care providers to apply quality measures to improve clinical quality and performance in the delivery of pediatric health care services.
