The alternative quality contract: impact on service use and spending for children with ADHD.
The authors used Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) claims for 2006-2011 to compare youths enrolled in provider organizations participating in the alternative quality contract (AQC) with those not participating. They found that the AQC was associated with small increases in the probability of any outpatient visits and in the probability and number of medication management visits among children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Further, spending did not change, and there was no evidence of reductions in service utilization or spending for children with ADHD in the first three years of AQC implementation.

Comparative effectiveness and safety of cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy for childhood anxiety disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
This review evaluated the comparative effectiveness and adverse events of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy for childhood anxiety disorders. Evidence supports the effectiveness of CBT and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for reducing childhood anxiety symptoms. Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors also appear to be effective based on less consistent evidence.

Prevalence and clinical differences of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in a community sample of youth receiving cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety.
This study examined the incidence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in youth with anxiety before initiating cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as the emergence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors during treatment. Findings suggest that the assessment of suicidality at a single time-point and from one informant is not sufficient to identify at-risk youth. Ongoing assessment of suicidal risk during treatment is important in this population.

Conceptualizing culturally infused engagement and its measurement for ethnic minority and immigrant children and families.
The authors systematically reviewed 119 existing instruments that measure the multi-dimensional and developmental process of engagement for ethnic minority and immigrant children and families. Its findings highlight the variety of tools that are used to measure behavioral and attitudinal dimensions of engagement, showing the limitations of their application for ethnic minority and immigrant children and families.

Quality improvement, implementation, and dissemination strategies to improve mental health care for children and adolescents: a systematic review.
The researchers describe the process by which they created an online interactive community resources map for use in the Connect for Health randomized controlled trial. The trial was conducted in the 6 pediatric practices that cared for the highest percentage of children with overweight or obesity. Parents and community partners identified several community resources that could help support behavior change.

Contributions of children with multiple chronic conditions to pediatric hospitalizations in the United States: a retrospective cohort analysis.
Researchers assessed how much of US pediatric inpatient care is used by children with multiple chronic conditions (CMCC) and which chronic conditions are the key drivers of hospital use. CMCC accounted for over one-fourth of acute-care hospitalizations and one-half of all hospital dollars for US pediatric care in 2012. Substantial CMCC hospital resource use involves children with mental health-related conditions.

Preparing youth with cancer for amputation: a systematic review.
This review aimed to examine and identify the type and degree of psychosocial preparation provided to the child with cancer and family prior to amputation. Its findings demonstrate that there is a lack of studies to date that have adequately addressed psychosocial preparation prior to amputation for pediatric oncology patients.

Psychometric evaluation of the youth eating disorder examination questionnaire in children with overweight or obesity.
This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Youth Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (YEDE-Q) and its utility for detecting loss of control (LOC) eating . It concluded that the YEDE-Q may not have utility as a screener for identifying true cases of LOC eating among school-age children with overweight or obesity.

Secretive eating among youth with overweight or obesity.
This study evaluated the prevalence and correlates of secretive eating in youth with overweight or obesity. It found that youth who endorsed secretive eating had higher eating-related psychopathology and were more likely to endorse loss of control eating and purging than their counterparts who did not endorse secretive eating. Groups did not differ in excessive exercise or behavioral problems.

Selected comorbidities of atopic dermatitis: atopy, neuropsychiatric, and musculoskeletal disorders.
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic pruritic inflammatory skin disease with substantial morbidity and quality of life impairment. This review summarizes recent developments in the atopic and neuropsychiatric comorbidities of AD. For example, it concludes that persons with AD appear to be at higher risk for multiple neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, speech disorders in childhood, headaches, and seizures.

Caregiver involvement in behavioural health services in the context of child welfare service referrals: a qualitative study.
This study presents findings from a qualitative study of caregivers involved with child welfare agencies who were referred to behavioral health services. Findings suggest that when deciding to engage in services, caregivers weigh not only their individual and family behavioral health needs but also potential agency intervention, including loss of child custody.

Parent burden in accessing outpatient psychiatric services for adolescent depression in a large state system.
This study examined barriers facing parents who seek outpatient psychiatric care in a large state system for adolescents with depression. It found that virtually all clinics required at least one intake or therapy appointment before receipt of a psychiatry appointment. Parental burden did not differ by region, urbanicity, clinic type, seasonality (spring or summer), or insurance status.

The prospective associations between self-efficacy and depressive symptoms from early to middle adolescence: a cross-lagged model.
This study investigated the bidirectional and prospective associations between depressive symptoms and academic, social and emotional self-efficacy from early to mid adolescence in a cross-lagged path model. It found that depressive symptoms predicted subsequent levels of academic and emotional self-efficacy on all time points, and social self-efficacy on one time point. Self-efficacy did not predict subsequent levels of depressive symptoms.

Accuracy of electronic health record-derived data for the identification of incident ADHD.
The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of electronic health record (EHR)-derived diagnoses in identifying children with incident (i.e., newly diagnosed) ADHD. The authors describe their study and suggest that studies predicated on the identification of incident ADHD cases need to carefully consider study designs that minimize the likelihood of case misclassification.

Examining psychotropic medication use among youth in the U.S. by race/ethnicity and psychological impairment.
This study examined racial/ethnic differences in the prescription of psychotropic medications among youth with and without psychological impairment. Compared to Black and Latino youth with psychological impairment, White youth were more likely to be prescribed psychotropic medications when impaired. Among youth never having psychological impairment, White youth were also more likely to be prescribed medications compared to their racial/ethnic minority counterparts.

Research in the integration of behavioral health for adolescents and young adults in primary care settings: a systematic review.
Adolescents and young adults with mental health conditions have some of the lowest rates of treatment for their conditions of all age groups.. In this paper, the authors review the current research literature for behavioral health integration in the adolescent and young adult population and make recommendations for needed research to move the field forward.

Depressed adolescents' positive and negative use of social media.
This qualitative study examined descriptions of social media use among 23 adolescents (18 female, 5 male) who were diagnosed with depression to explore how social media use may influence and be influenced by psychological distress. Adolescents described both positive and negative use of social media. ." In the context of treatment, these adolescents shifted their social media use patterns from what they perceived as negative to more positive use.

The impact of cancer and its treatment on the growth and development of the pediatric patient.
Researchers sought to clarify the different models of psychosocial development and applicable psychosocial interventions to better prepare and tailor cancer treatment to pediatric patients. They found that pediatric patients of all ages cope and adjust better to all phases of treatment when their care is delivered in a developmentally-informed and psychosocially thoughtful way.
