An evidence map for social and structural determinants for maternal morbidity and mortality: a systematic review.
The study aimed to identify social and structural determinants of maternal morbidity and mortality during prenatal and postpartum periods in the U.S. Out of 8,378 references screened, 118 studies were included, covering domains like identity, socioeconomic factors, violence, and trauma. Findings revealed mixed patterns between risk factors and outcomes, with notable attention to depression and mental health. Advancing the field long-term should involve developing comprehensive datasets to thoroughly investigate intersections with biological and medical risk factors.

Associations between gestational weight gain, gestational diabetes, and childhood obesity incidence.
Excessive maternal gestational weight gain (GWG) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have been linked to childhood obesity. This cohort study explored the association between maternal weight gain during pregnancy, GDM, and early childhood obesity. Findings revealed that excessive weight gain during the second and third trimesters increased the risk of childhood obesity by age 6. However, GDM was associated with a lower risk. No significant interaction between GWG and GDM was observed.

Association of childbirth with medical debt.
The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between childbirth and having medical debt in collections and explored variations by neighborhood socioeconomic status. The study found that among a statewide cohort (n=26,717) of commercially insured pregnant and postpartum adults, having medical debt in collections was more likely among postpartum individuals compared with pregnant individuals and those in lowest-income neighborhoods compared with all others. Postpartum adults in the lowest-income neighborhoods also had the greatest predicted probabilities of having medical debt in collections, followed by pregnant adults in the lowest-income neighborhoods, followed by all other postpartum and pregnant adults.

Respectful maternity care : a systematic review.
The purpose of this systematic review was to collect information on definitions and valid measurements of respectful maternity care (RMC), its effectiveness for improving pregnant and postpartum maternal and infant health outcomes, and strategies for implementation. Frameworks for RMC were found to be well described but varied in definition. Evidence was lacking on the effectiveness of implementing RMC to improve any maternal or infant health outcome. Tools to measure RMC demonstrated consistency but lacked a gold standard; the authors conclude that further evaluation was needed before implementation in U.S. settings.

Maternal deaths from suicide and overdose in Colorado, 2004-2012.
This study ascertained demographic and clinical characteristics of maternal deaths from self-harm (accidental overdose or suicide) and to identify opportunities for prevention. It found that in seventeen percent (n=10) of maternal deaths there had been a known substance use disorder. Prior psychiatric diagnoses were documented in 54 percent (n=32) and prior suicide attempts in 10 percent (n=6).

Health behaviors among women using fertility treatment.
The researchers described associated perinatal behaviors among women using fertility treatment. They concluded that a significant proportion of women using fertility treatments were not practicing recommended perinatal behaviors or receiving prenatal counseling on preventable risk factors.

Optimizing preconception health among young women: what are we missing?
This study evaluated whether receipt of specific preconception counseling topics differs between teen, young adult, and older mothers. It found that teen mothers were less than half as likely to be counseled about taking folic acid, 4 times more likely to be counseled about vaccines, and twice as likely to be counseled about mental health before pregnancy compared with adult mothers.

Reliable implementation of evidence: a qualitative study of antenatal corticosteroid administration in Ohio hospitals.
The objective of this study was to understand conditions that enable delivery of antenatal corticosteroid administration (ANCS) with high reliability among hospitals participating in an Ohio Perinatal Quality Collaborative (OPQC) ANCS project. Among the major themes supporting reliable implementation of ANCS at these hospitals that emerged were: (1) presence of a high reliability culture, (2) processes that emphasize high reliability, and (3) timely and efficient administration process.

Understanding consumer perceptions and awareness of hospital-based maternity care quality measures.
This study explored factors that may influence use of comparative public reports for hospital maternity care. It found that, when describing high-quality maternity care, participants focused on interactions with providers, including respect for preferences and communication. The importance of quality measures was influenced by the extent to which they focused on babies' health, were perceived as the hospital's responsibility, and were perceived as representing "standard care."

Using social media, online social networks, and internet search as platforms for public health interventions: a pilot study.
The researchers analyzed public health interventions aimed at women potentially interested in maternity care via campaigns on social media (Twitter), social networks (Facebook), and online search engines (Google Search). They found that the campaigns reached a little more than 140,000 consumers each day across the three platforms, with a little more than 400 engagements each day. Facebook and Google search had broader reach, better engagement rates, and lower costs than Twitter.

Effects of group prenatal care on food insecurity during late pregnancy and early postpartum.
The researchers compared the effects of group to individual prenatal care in late pregnancy and early postpartum on women's food security and psychosocial outcomes among food-insecure women. They found that group prenatal care provided health education and the opportunity for women to share experiences and knowledge, potentially improving food security through increasing confidence and skills in managing household food resources.

Timeliness, frequency and content of antenatal care: which is most important to reducing indigenous disparities in birth weight in Mexico?
The authors estimated the potential for added weight gain among indigenous infants if their mothers received timely, frequent, and complete antenatal care (ANC). They found that the frequency of ANC was positively associated with birth weight for all women but complete ANC appears to differentially affect indigenous women at the bottom of the birth weight distribution.

Examining the link between women's exposure to stressful life events prior to conception and infant and toddler health: the role of birth weight.
The authors suggested a pathway may exist among maternal exposure to stressful life events prior to conception (PSLEs), infant birth weight, and subsequent offspring health. Infant and toddler health outcomes were assessed at 9 and 24 months, including overall health status, special healthcare needs, and severe health conditions. The analysis suggested a chains-of-risk model in which women's exposure to PSLEs increased the risk for giving birth to a very low birth weight infant, adversely affecting infant and toddler health.

Screening for iron deficiency anemia and iron supplementation in pregnant women to improve maternal health and birth outcomes.
This case study involves a 28-year-old woman presents for a routine antepartum visit. She is 33 weeks pregnant and also has a four-year-old son. She has no particular problems, and the findings from your examination are unremarkable. She asks if her blood iron level should be tested. Based on the recommendations of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, the quiz asks 3 questions involving screening and treatment.

Patient volumes and pre- and postdischarge postpartum infection: a retrospective cohort study.
The researchers examined the association between hospital and clinician obstetric volume and postpartum infection risk in the pre- and postdischarge periods. They found that hospital obstetric volume is positively associated with predischarge postpartum infections, whereas clinician volume may be negatively associated with those predischarge infections.
