Utility of automated data-adaptive propensity score method for confounding by indication in comparative effectiveness study in real world Medicare and registry data.
The authors assessed the utility of an automated data-adaptive analytic approach for confounding adjustment when both claims and clinical registry data are available. Using a comparative study example of carotid artery stenting vs. carotid endarterectomy with strong confounding by indication, they found that the automated data-adaptive propensity score performed better than the investigator-specified propensity score in general, but both claims and registry data were needed to adequately control for bias.

The comparing options for management: patient-centered results for uterine fibroids (COMPARE-UF) registry: Rationale and design.
The purpose of the study was to design and establish a uterine fibroid (UF) registry based in the United States to provide comparative effectiveness data regarding UF treatment. This registry, called Comparing Options for Management: Patient-centered Results for Uterine Fibroids (COMPARE-UF), will generate evidence on the comparative effectiveness of different procedural options for UF, in order to help patients and their caregivers make informed decisions that best meet an individual patient's short- and long-term preferences.

A framework for classification of electronic health data extraction-transformation-loading challenges in data network participation.
The researchers conducted key-informant interviews with data partner representatives to survey the Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) process challenges faced in clinical data research networks (CDRNs) and registries. The paper concluded that overcoming ETL technical challenges requires significant investments in a broad array of information technologies and human resources. Identifying these technical obstacles can inform optimal resource allocation to minimize the barriers and cost of entry for new data partners into extant networks, which in turn can expand data networks' inclusiveness and diversity.

Comparative effectiveness of cardiac resynchronization therapy among patients with heart failure and atrial fibrillation: Findings from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry's Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Registry.
The researchers investigated the outcomes of patients with both atrial fibrillation and heart failure who receive cardiac resynchronization therapy with defibrillator (CRT-D) compared with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) alone. They found that CRT-D was associated with lower risks of mortality, all-cause readmission, and heart failure readmission, as well as with a similar risk of complications compared with ICD alone.

A digital architecture for a network-based learning health system: integrating chronic care management, quality improvement, and research.
The authors collaborated with the ImproveCareNow Network to create a proof-of-concept architecture for a network-based Learning Health System. This collaboration involved transitioning an existing registry to one that is linked to the electronic health record (EHR), enabling a “data in once” strategy. This required automating a series of reports that support care improvement while also demonstrating the use of observational registry data for comparative effectiveness research.

Feasibility and validity of the pediatric ulcerative colitis activity index in routine clinical practice.
The specific objectives of this study were to evaluate the feasibility of using the Pediatric Ulcerative Colitis Activity Index (PUCAI) in routine clinical practice settings and the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between PUCAI and physician global assessment. Based on a population drawn from a large, diverse collection of pediatric gastroenterology practices, the study concluded that the PUCAI is feasible to use in routine clinical settings.

Implementation of patient-reported outcome measures in U.S. total joint replacement registries: rationale, status, and plans.
The authors report on the status of patient-reported outcomes (PRO) implementation as well as perceived barriers and facilitators of PRO use among five U.S. total joint replacement registries. They find that the current stage of implementation of patient-reported outcomes measures varies widely among U.S. registries.

Linkage of a de-identified United States rheumatoid arthritis registry with administrative data to facilitate comparative effectiveness research.
In order to address a gap in linkage methodology, the researchers sought to link a large, de-identified outpatient registry of patients with rheumatoid arthritis with national Medicare administrative claims data. The purpose of their report was to describe the methods and validity of this linkage.

Prescribing warfarin at discharge for heart failure patients: findings from the Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure Registry
The researchers used data from a heart failure (HF) registry to determine the prevalence and variation, as well as patient characteristics, in warfarin prescription among real-world HF population. They found that warfarin was prescribed at discharge for more than 1 out of 10 patients hospitalized for HF without evident indications or contraindications for anticoagulation.

It's up to you: a multi-message, phased driver facility campaign to increase organ donation registration rates in Illinois.
This project applied successful strategies previously employed in driver facility campaigns to examine whether these strategies would be effective in growing a registry where the majority of individuals have already had the opportunity to register as an organ donor. In facilities with historically high and low registration percentages, these strategies resulted in higher organ donor registration rates, compared with control facilities.
