The comparing options for management: patient-centered results for uterine fibroids (COMPARE-UF) registry: Rationale and design.
The purpose of the study was to design and establish a uterine fibroid (UF) registry based in the United States to provide comparative effectiveness data regarding UF treatment. This registry, called Comparing Options for Management: Patient-centered Results for Uterine Fibroids (COMPARE-UF), will generate evidence on the comparative effectiveness of different procedural options for UF, in order to help patients and their caregivers make informed decisions that best meet an individual patient's short- and long-term preferences.

Rationale and design of the Clinic and Community Approaches to Healthy Weight Randomized Trial.
Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of family-centered, pediatric weight management programs in reducing childhood obesity. Yet, programs to optimize the care of low-income children with obesity are needed. The investigators sought to examine the comparative effectiveness of two, potentially scalable pediatric weight management programs delivered to low-income children in a clinical or community setting.

Clinical correlates of acute bipolar depressive episode with psychosis.
The aim of this study was to identify the characteristics of depressed bipolar patients with current psychosis compared to those without psychosis. Results showed that psychosis was present in 10.6% of the studied depressed patients. Psychotic patients had less education, lower income, and were more frequently single and unemployed. Psychosis was also associated with a more severe depressive episode, higher suicidality, more comorbid conditions and worse functioning. Most group differences disappeared when controlling for depression severity.

Patient-centered medical homes and access to services for new primary care patients.
The study objective was to determine whether patient-centered medical homes (PCMH) practices are associated with better access to new appointments for nonelderly adults by direct measurement. Callers to PCMH practices compared with non-PCMH practices were more likely to schedule a new appointment and be offered after-hour appointments.

Methods for engaging stakeholders in comparative effectiveness research: a patient-centered approach to improving diabetes care.
This article presents ways to engage stakeholders in comparative effectiveness research, including patient community surveys, stakeholder meetings with substantial patient representation, and patient stakeholder deciding votes in selecting pilot research topics. Researchers and health care leaders should continue to develop best-practices and strategies for increasing patient involvement in comparative effectiveness and delivery science research.

Patient-centered, direct-access online care for management of atopic dermatitis: a randomized clinical trial.
The researchers compared the effectiveness of a direct-access, online model with that of an in-person model for follow-up management of pediatric and adult patients with atopic dermatitis. They found that patients whose disease was managed through the direct-access online model achieved equivalent improvements in atopic dermatitis disease severity compared with those whose disease was managed through the usual, in-person visits.

Targeted versus universal decolonization to prevent ICU infection.
In this pragmatic, cluster-randomized trial the authors compared targeted versus universal decolonization of patients in intensive care units (ICUs) as strategies for preventing health care-associated infections, particularly those caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). They found that in routine ICU practice, universal decolonization was more effective than targeted decolonization or screening and isolation in reducing rates of MRSA clinical isolates and bloodstream infection from any pathogen.
