Post-hip fracture mortality in nursing home residents by obesity status.
This research letter discusses a study that examined whether obesity status affected mortality in post-hip fracture patients who were nursing home residents. A national cohort of nursing home (NH) residents was examined from national Medicare fee-for-service claims linked to the Minimum Data Set (MDS) from January 2008 through the end of 2009. A total of 33, 622 long-stay residents were identified who had been hospitalized for a hip fracture. They excluded 6918 patients due to a number of factors. They classified residents based on their BMI: normal BMI, overweight, mild obesity, or moderate/severe obesity. They found that being moderate/severely obese did not increase mortality.

Does obesity protect against death in sepsis? A retrospective cohort study of 55,038 adult patients.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the relationship between body mass index and sepsis mortality using detailed clinical data for case detection and risk adjustment. In adults with clinically-defined sepsis, results demonstrated lower short-term mortality in patients with higher body mass indices compared with those with normal body mass indices and higher short-term mortality in those with low body mass indices. Understanding how obesity improves survival in sepsis would inform prognostic and therapeutic strategies.

Association of obesity with severity of heart failure exacerbation: a population-based study.
Researchers investigate the associations of obesity with severity of heart failure exacerbation and in-hospital mortality using population-based data from the State Inpatient Databases. Subjects were adults hospitalized for heart failure exacerbation in seven States from 2012 to 2013. The researchers found that, based on large population-based data sets of patients with heart failure exacerbation, obesity was associated with higher acute severity measures but lower in-hospital mortality.

Obesity and severity of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
A study was done to determine if there was an increase in severity and mortality with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients who were also obese. Researchers used data from 2012-2013 State Inpatient Databases data of seven U.S. states. 17% of COPD patients in the database were defined as obese. Obesity was shown to increase use of ventilation, increased hospital stays but not in-hospital mortality.

Reexamining the association of body mass index with overall survival outcomes after liver transplantation.
The purpose of this study is to identify the range of body mass index (BMI) at liver transplantation (LT) associated with the lowest risks of posttransplant mortality by Model of End Stage Liver Disease (MELD) category. It concluded that obesity in LT patients is not necessarily associated with higher posttransplantation mortality and highlighted the importance of the interaction between BMI and MELD category to determine their survival likelihood.
