Testing strategies and predictors for evaluating immediate and delayed reactions to cephalosporins.
Although 1% to 2% of the general population carries a cephalosporin allergy label (CAL), there is a lack of validated testing strategies and predictors of true allergy. The objective of this study was to identify cross-reactivity patterns and predictors of skin test positive (STP) in geographically disparate patients with a CAL. The investigators found that cephalosporin cross-reactivity was based on shared R1 groupings. Increasing time since the original reaction and the presence of a PAL with unknown cephalosporin tolerance predicted a lower likelihood of cephalosporin STP.

Mining social media data to assess the risk of skin and soft tissue infections from allergen immunotherapy.
This study examined large social media databases including Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit to identify postings of rare incidents of contamination or infection from extracts for allergen immunotherapy (AIT). They used natural language processing (NLP) related to AIT from 2012 to 2016. They compared posts on adverse events for AIT compared to influenza vaccinations. The results showed that both types of posts are rare events.

Association of systemic sclerosis with a unique colonic microbial consortium.
The authors compared colonic microbial composition in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients and healthy controls and determined whether certain microbial genera are associated with gastrointestinal (GI) tract symptoms in patients with SSc. They found that SSc patients had decreased levels of commensal bacteria and increased levels of pathobiont bacteria compared with healthy controls. They concluded that this unique ecologic change may perpetuate immunologic aberrations and contribute to clinical manifestations of SSc.
