Association between implementing comprehensive learning collaborative strategies in a statewide collaborative and changes in hospital safety culture.
Hospital safety culture remains a critical consideration when seeking to reduce medical errors and improve quality of care. Little is known regarding whether participation in a comprehensive, multicomponent, statewide quality collaborative is associated with changes in hospital safety culture. The purpose of this study was to examine whether implementation of a comprehensive, multicomponent, statewide surgical quality improvement collaborative was associated with changes in hospital safety culture.

Deliberate learning in health care: the effect of importing best practices and creative problem solving on hospital performance improvement.
The authors examined the effect on quality improvement of two common but distinct approaches to organizational learning, importing best practices and creative problem solving, in hospitals focused on improving treatment time for patients with heart attacks. They found that importing best practices helps hospitals achieve initial phase improvement, after which significant further improvement requires creative problem solving as well.

Frontline hospital workers and the worker safety/patient safety nexus.
This article reported on panels and small-group discussions from a day-long workshop held in Washington, D.C., on October 25, 2012, to explore whether and how hospital-based frontline health care workers (HCWs) affect patient safety and how they experience safety in their work settings. Conference sponsors included AHRQ, and workshop sessions focused on the intersection of worker safety and patient safety and on specific steps that health care institutions have used to implement a culture of safety in the workplace.
