Electronic health record-supported implementation of an evidence-based pathway for perioperative surgical care.
This study examines the role of electronic health records (EHRs) in implementing enhanced recovery pathways (ERPs) for perioperative surgical care. Interviews with informaticians and clinicians from eight US hospitals revealed three thematic clusters: "EHR difficulties," "EHR enablers," and "EHR barriers." Researchers concluded that high performers and improvers successfully integrated ERPs into EHRs with dedicated multidisciplinary teams, while others faced challenges. Early involvement of informatics expertise benefited ERP implementation and sustainability.

Role of social knowledge networking technology in facilitating meaningful use of electronic health record medication reconciliation.
In this paper, Rangachari 1) conducted a narrative review of the literature on "technology use," to understand how technologies-in-practice may be transformed from limited use to meaningful use; 2) conducted a narrative review of the literature on "organizational change implementation," to understand how changes in technology use could be successfully implemented and sustained in a healthcare organizational context; and 3) applied lessons learned from the narrative literature reviews to identify strategies for the meaningful use and successful implementation of EHR Medication Reconciliation technology.

Assessing race and ethnicity data quality across cancer registries and EMRs in two hospitals.
The objective of this study was to characterize the quality of race/ethnicity data collection efforts. The authors assessed race and ethnicity data quality across cancer registries and electronic medical records in two hospitals. Their findings suggested that high-quality race/ethnicity data are attainable. Many of the "errors" in race/ethnicity data were caused by missing or "Unknown" data values.

Electronic health records and quality of care: an observational study modeling impact on mortality, readmissions, and complications.
The authors assessed the relationship between electronic health records (EHR) adoption and patient outcomes. Their results indicate that patients receiving medical and surgical care at hospitals with no EHR system have similar outcomes compared to patients seeking care at hospitals with a full EHR system. They concluded that EHRs may play a smaller role than expected in patient outcomes and overall quality of care.

A mixed methods study of how clinician 'super users' influence others during the implementation of electronic health records.
The researchers present the results of a comparative case study in which they sought to identify the mechanisms of super users’ influence on implementation success and examine the impact of a core contextual factor: how super users are selected. They found that super users on both medical units in a large hospital were more proactive, provided more comprehensive explanations for their actions, used positive framing, and shared information.

Using social knowledge networking technology to enable meaningful use of electronic health record technology in hospitals and health systems.
In this paper, Rangachari (1) reviewed the theoretical literatures on technology use & implementation, and identified a framework for understanding & overcoming unintended adverse consequences of implementing Electronic Health Records; (2) outlined a broad project proposal to test the applicability of the framework in enabling "meaningful use" of Electronic Health Records in a healthcare context; and (3) identified strategies for successful implementation of Electronic Health Records in hospitals & health systems, based on the literature review and application.

More than half of US hospitals have at least a basic EHR, but stage 2 criteria remain challenging for most.
The investigators used American Hospital Association data to assess progress and challenges in EHR adoption. They found that most hospitals are able to meet many of the stage 2 meaningful-use criteria, but only 5.8 percent of hospitals are able to meet them all.
