Comparative effectiveness of uterine leiomyoma procedures using a large insurance claims database.
The objective of this retrospective analysis of administrative claims from a large U.S. commercial insurance database, was to compare risk of reintervention, long-term clinical outcomes, and health care utilization among women who have bulk symptoms from leiomyoma and who underwent the following procedures: hysterectomy, myomectomy, uterine artery embolization, and magnetic resonance-guided, focused ultrasound surgery.

Role of patient-reported outcomes in postsurgical monitoring in oncology.
This article describes the benefits of electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) in postsurgical symptom monitoring for surgical oncology patients; ePROs can identify at-risk patients, provide closer monitoring, and provide a mechanism to identify and treat complications before they worsen. The article also summarizes the literature of ePRO use in surgical oncology.

A review of cost communication in oncology: patient attitude, provider acceptance, and outcome assessment.
This review identified 15 articles that covered 3 topics related to patient-physician cost communication: patient attitude, physician acceptance, and the associated outcomes. The data suggested that cost communication was associated with improved patient satisfaction, lower out-of-pocket expenses, and a higher likelihood of medication nonadherence; none of the studies established causality.

How much do cancer-related symptoms contribute to health-related quality of life in lung and colorectal cancer patients? A report from the Cancer Care Outcomes Research and Surveillance (CanCORS) Consortium.
The objective of this study was to examine associations of symptoms with physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) and in patients with lung cancer. It found that physical component summary scores for patients with CRC and lung cancer were below the general population norm of 50 (43 and 37, respectively), and mental component summary scores were at the population norm.

Health-related quality of life in lung cancer survivors: Latent class and latent transition analysis.
The authors determined the HRQOL classes that exist among lung cancer survivors, examined transitions among those classes over time, and compared survival outcomes of patients according to the classes present in the initial phase of care. Lung cancer survivors were characterized into 4 different classes based on HRQOL responses, and few survivors transitioned to better HRQOL classes.

Quality of life and satisfaction among prostate cancer patients followed in a dedicated survivorship clinic.
The researchers integrated quality of lifer (QOL) assessments into a prostate cancer survivorship clinic and compared recovery and satisfaction among men managed in the survivorship clinic with those followed with more routine care. They concluded that patient QOL and satisfaction were higher among men managed in a survivorship program.

The effect of graft type on mortality in liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma.
The researchers aimed to: (1) examine the risk of mortality in liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), (2) to establish if this risk is affected by partial graft use, and (3) to determine if this effect is mitigated by improved tumor-associated risk stratification. They found that the risk of mortality following LT does not differ by the type of graft used in recipients with favorable-risk HCC or those without HCC.

Complications following primary and revision transsphenoidal surgeries for pituitary tumors.
This study aimed to determine the incidence of major complications following both primary and revision transsphenoidal pituitary surgery. Major complications included endocrinopathic, skull base, orbital, hemorrhagic and thromboembolic complications. The overall complication rate following revision surgery was not significantly different from primary surgery. Insurance status and a diagnosis of a malignant neoplasm were associated with a higher rate of complications.

Treatment of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in the elderly: regimens without anthracyclines are common and not futile.
This study characterized treatment choices and compared the 3-year overall survival rates of 8262 Medicare beneficiaries diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in 2000 – 2006. It found that patients treated with anthracycline-containing regimens with rituximab have the highest survival rates when all available clinical features are accounted for.

Conditional survival in patients with thyroid cancer.
This study used data from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry to determine conditional 5-year disease-specific survival based on patient age, gender, and stage. It found that patients with localized thyroid cancer have excellent conditional 5-year survival, irrespective of where they are in their survivorship phase. In addition, patients with regional thyroid cancer have relatively stable conditional 5-year survival.
