Discharge heart rate after hospitalization for myocardial infarction and long-term mortality in 2 US registries.
In this study, researchers evaluated the association of discharge and admission heart rates with 3-year mortality. They concluded that a higher discharge heart rate after AMI was more strongly associated with 3-year mortality than a high heart rate at admissions.

Association of pretransplant and posttransplant program ratings with candidate mortality after listing.
The Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) is responsible for understandable reporting of program metrics, including transplant rate, waitlist mortality, and posttransplant outcomes. SRTR developed five-tier systems for each metric to improve accessibility for the public. In this study, the researchers investigated the associations of the five-tier assignments at listing with all-cause candidate mortality after listing, for candidates listed July 12, 2011-June 16, 2014.

Comparing Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients posttransplant program-specific outcome ratings at listing with subsequent recipient outcomes after transplant.
To improve accessibility of program-specific reports to patients, the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients released a 5-tier system for categorizing 1-year posttransplant program evaluations. Whether this system predicts subsequent posttransplant outcomes at the time patients are waitlisted has been questioned. IN this study, researchers investigated the association of tier at listing and the corresponding continuous score used for tier assignment, which ranges from 0 (poor outcomes) to 1 (good outcomes), with eventual 1-year posttransplant graft survival.

Better graft outcomes from offspring donor kidneys among living donor kidney transplant recipients in the United States.
This study used Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients data 2001-2016 to evaluate death-censored graft failure (DCGF) and mortality for recipients of offspring versus nonoffspring living donor kidneys, using Cox regression models with interaction terms. The investigators found that kidneys from offspring donors provided lower graft failure and comparable mortality.

Readmission predicts 90-day mortality after esophagectomy: analysis of surveillance, epidemiology, and end results registry linked to Medicare outcomes.
The purpose of this study was to characterize postesophagectomy readmissions and determine their relationship with subsequent 90-day mortality. It found that one in 5 esophagectomy patients are readmitted early after discharge. Readmitted patients have a 5-fold increase in early mortality.

Can adding laboratory values improve risk-adjustment mortality models using clinical percutaneous cardiac intervention registry data?
The authors predicted in-hospital/30-day mortality with and without appended laboratory data using New York's percutaneous coronary intervention registry data from 2008-2010. They found that adding laboratory data did not significantly improve the risk-adjustment mortality models' performance and did not dramatically change the quality assessment of hospitals.

The value of adding laboratory data to coronary artery bypass grafting registry data to improve models for risk-adjusting provider mortality rates.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the addition of laboratory data to the clinical database for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) would identify laboratory variables that are significant independent predictors of short-term (in-hospital / 30-day) mortality. The researchers found that there was no significant difference in the discrimination of the registry model or the combined registry/laboratory model.

Statin therapy after infrainguinal bypass surgery for critical limb ischemia is associated with improved 5-year survival.
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of long-term statin use after lower extremity bypass grafting on patient-related and graft-related outcomes. It found that statin therapy is associated with a 5-year survival benefit after lower extremity bypass in patients with critical limb ischemia. However, 1-year limb-related outcomes were not influenced by statin use in our large observational cohort of patients undergoing revascularization in New England.

Conditional survival in patients with thyroid cancer.
This study used data from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry to determine conditional 5-year disease-specific survival based on patient age, gender, and stage. It found that patients with localized thyroid cancer have excellent conditional 5-year survival, irrespective of where they are in their survivorship phase. In addition, patients with regional thyroid cancer have relatively stable conditional 5-year survival.
