High-intensity telemedicine decreases emergency department use for ambulatory care sensitive conditions by older adult senior living community residents.
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a high-intensity telemedicine program for senior living community (SLC) residents on the rate of Emergency department (ED) visits for ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSCs). It found that providing acute illness care by high-intensity telemedicine to older adults residing in SLCs significantly decreases the rate of ED use for ACSCs over 1 year.

Information sharing preferences of older patients and their families.
This study identified how patients older than 75 years (hereinafter, elders) and family caregivers of such patients approach sharing of health information, with the hope of applying the results to collaborative patient portals. It found that information sharing and control are complex issues even under the most well-meaning circumstances. While elders may delegate control and share information with family, they want to retain granular control of their information.

Developing and evaluating a website to guide older adults in their health information searches: a mixed-methods approach.
This mixed-methods study developed and evaluated an online program to improve older adults’ skills in identifying high-quality web-based health information. It found that experimental participants assigned significantly higher ratings of usability and learning to the new site than controls did to their tutorial although no differences were found in self-efficacy or knowledge.

Impact of cognitive training on balance and gait in older adults.
The researchers assessed whether a commercially available computer-based cognitive training program delivered in a classroom format over a 10-week period improved physical performance outcomes related to walking and balance in older adults. They found that the time to complete the Timed Up and Go increased less for the intervention group; however, there were no significant differences by group on gait speed or gait speed while distracted.

The effect of an information and communication technology (ICT) on older adults' quality of life: study protocol for a randomized control trial.
The goal of this study is to test the effects of a technology called Elder Tree designed for and used by older adults and their family caregivers. The primary purpose of Elder Tree, a web-based information and communication technology (ICT), is to improve older adult quality of life. Recruitment for the trial began in November 2013 and the intervention period will end in November 2016.

Design considerations for patient portal adoption by low-income, older adults.
This paper describes the results of an interview study investigating facilitators and barriers to adoption of patient portals among low-income, older adults in rural and urban populations in the southeastern United States. The authors then present a set of considerations for designing the patient portal user experience, aimed at helping healthcare clinics to meet U.S. federally-mandated 'meaningful use' requirements.

Health literacy, vulnerable patients, and health information technology use: where do we go from here?
The authors comment on an article in the same issue that found only 32 percent of older adults used the Internet to get health information and only 10 percent of older adults with limited health literacy did so. They discuss its implications for the related issues of access, training, and perhaps most importantly, the usability of websites and other technology platforms.

A new paradigm of technology-enabled 'vital signs' for early detection of health change for older adults.
The purpose of this article is threefold: (1) discuss research behind the technology-enabled ‘vital signs’ for early detection of health change that the Eldertech Research team has conducted, (2) discuss clinical implications for mainstream adoption and use of these vital signs for early interventions to help older adults, their families, and healthcare providers, and (3) present some obstacles to overcome for mainstream adoption.

Fall detection in homes of older adults using the Microsoft Kinect.
The researchers present a method for detecting falls in the homes of older adults using the Microsoft Kinect and a two-stage fall detection system. The method is compared against five state-of-the-art fall detection algorithms and significantly better results are achieved.

Use of patient portals: personal health information management in older adults.
This paper described initial results from the SOARING (Studying Older Adults & Researching Information Needs and Goals) study at the University of Washington, a participatory design investigation of personal health information management (PHIM) in older adults. Its findings indicate that patient portals designed to target the specific needs for older adults can support PHIM.

Quantitative gait measurement with pulse-Doppler radar for passive in-home gait assessment.
The researchers proposed and validated a low-cost Doppler radar system for passive and continuous in-home gait assessment. Using signal processing techniques, they estimated human torso velocity and leg swing for step recognition. They found that the radar system has achieved a high accuracy on the step time estimation, while the walking speed estimation is systematically affected by the walking path direction.

Personal health records: a randomized trial of effects on elder medication safety.
The purpose of this study was to compare patient-reported medication self-management behaviors and safety indicators among older adult participants invited to use an electronic personal health record (PHR). Among the 16.1 percent of participants who used the PHR frequently, there were significantly more changes in medication use, improved medication reconciliation behaviors, and more recognition of side effects.

Telecounseling for the linguistically isolated: a pilot study with older Korean immigrants.
This study explored the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a telecounseling program in the client’s native language. Participants who were native Korean language speakers living in Florida showed generally high levels of acceptance and adherence to the telecounseling program. The high retention of the participants may be due to multiple factors including brevity of the program and convenience of the location.

Automated health alerts from Kinect-based in-home gait measurements.
This paper details initial investigation of a method for automatically generating alerts to clinicians in response to changes in in-home gait parameters. The three case studies discussed illustrate the potential of automated alerts based on in-home gait data for notifying caregivers of changes in an individual's gait that may be indicative of changes in health status.
