Pilot testing Fall TIPS (Tailoring Interventions for Patient Safety): a patient-centered fall prevention toolkit.
Patient falls during an acute hospitalization cause injury, reduced mobility, and increased costs. The laminated paper Fall TIPS Toolkit (Fall TIPS) provides clinical decision support at the bedside by linking each patient's fall risk assessment with evidence-based interventions. The investigators examined strategies to integrate this evidence into clinical practice. They concluded that engaging hospital and clinical leadership is critical in translating evidence-based care into clinical practice. They address and detail barriers to adoption of the protocol to provide guidance for spread to other institutions.

Behavioral counseling to promote a healthful diet and physical activity for cardiovascular disease prevention in adults without known cardiovascular disease risk factors: updated evidence report and systematic review for the USPSTF
The researchers systematically reviewed the evidence on the benefits and harms of behavioral counseling for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in adults without known cardiovascular risk factors to inform the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). Diet and physical activity behavioral interventions were found to result in consistent modest benefits across a variety of important intermediate health outcomes across 6 to 12 months, including blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein and total cholesterol levels, and adiposity.

A clinical prediction rule for rebound hyperbilirubinemia following inpatient phototherapy.
The American Academy of Pediatrics provides little guidance on when to discontinue phototherapy in newborns treated for hyperbilirubinemia. In this study, the investigators sought to develop a prediction rule to estimate the probability of rebound hyperbilirubinemia after inpatient phototherapy. They concluded that the risk of rebound hyperbilirubinemia can be quantified according to an infant's gestational age, age at phototherapy initiation, and total serum bilirubin relative to the treatment threshold at phototherapy termination.

Association of atopic dermatitis with smoking: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The authors examined the association between atopic dermatitis (AD) and exposure to tobacco smoke. They found that a diagnosis of AD was associated with higher odds of active smoking and exposure to passive smoke but not to maternal smoking during pregnancy, and concluded that active and passive tobacco smoke exposure are associated with increased AD prevalence.

Serum urate gene associations with incident gout, measured in the Framingham Heart Study, are modified by renal disease and not by body mass index.
The researchers hypothesized that serum urate-associated SNPs, individually or collectively, interact with BMI and renal disease to contribute to risk of incident gout. They measured the incidence of gout and associated comorbidities using the original and offspring cohorts of the Framingham Heart Study. They demonstrated that minor alleles of rs1106766 (intergenic, INHBC) were negatively associated with the risk of incident gout in subjects without renal disease, but not for individuals with renal disease.

Risk assessment, genetic counseling, and genetic testing for BRCA-related cancer in women: a systematic review to update the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendation.
This systematic review was done in support of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) updated recommendation on the benefit and harms of risk assessment, genetic testing, and genetic counseling for BRCA-related cancer in women. A systematic review was done on literature from 2004 to July 30, 2013 from MEDLINE, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Health Technology Assessment, Scopus, and reference lists. Data on the participants, study design, analysis, follow-up, and results was extracted and a second investigator confirmed key data. The studies were rated on study quality and applicability. The analysis found women with high-risk for breast cancer had decreased risk of breast cancer by 85% to 100% by having a mastectomy, and risk of mortality by 81% to 100% compared to women without surgery. There was also a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer after having salpingo-oopherectomy surgery.
