Hospital procalcitonin testing and antibiotic treatment of patients admitted for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation
The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of procalcitonin (PCT) testing on antibiotic treatment of patients hospitalized for exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in routine practice. The study conclude that as currently implemented, PCT testing appears to have had little impact on decisions to initiate antibiotic therapy or on duration of treatment for COPD exacerbations.

Is everyone really breathing 20 times a minute? Assessing epidemiology and variation in recorded respiratory rate in hospitalised adults.
The researchers sought to assess the potential accuracy of respiratory rate (RR) by analyzing the distribution and variation as a proxy, since RR should be normally distributed if recorded accurately. The observed patterns suggest that RR is inaccurately recorded, even among those with cardiopulmonary compromise, and represents a 'spot' estimate with values of 18 and 20 breaths per minute representing 'normal.’

Use of post-acute facility care in children hospitalized with acute respiratory illness.
In this retrospective analysis, the investigators assessed which children hospitalized with respiratory illness (RI) were the most likely to use post-acute facility care (PAC) for recovery. The investigators found that children with RI who were most likely to use PAC had a high prevalence of multiple chronic conditions, multiple medications, and medical technology.

The E-Coach technology-assisted care transition system: a pragmatic randomized trial.
The researchers sought to evaluate the impact of a technology-supported care transition support program (E-Coach) on hospitalizations, days out of the community, and mortality. for patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They found that rehospitalization rates did not differ between E-Coach and usual care groups; however, E-Coach was associated with fewer days in the hospital with the COPD subgroup, suggesting that E-Coach may be more beneficial among those with COPD but not those with CHF.

Prevalence of blood eosinophilia in hospitalized patients with acute exacerbation of COPD.
In this first study to investigate the prevalence of eosinophilia among inpatients with acute exacerbation of COPD, the authors found that 17% had blood eosinophilia, and that such patients had higher frequency of readmission during a one-year follow-up period.

The role of human metapneumovirus in the critically ill adult patient.
The purpose of the study is to describe the role of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) infection in critical illness and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). It concluded that although most patients hospitalized with hMPV had chronic cardiac or pulmonary disease, hMPV can also be associated with serious respiratory illness and ARDS in adult patients without significant comorbidities or immunosuppression.
