Association of neighborhood socioeconomic context with participation in cardiac rehabilitation.
This study investigated the association of neighborhood socioeconomic context with Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) participation in the Southern Community Cohort Study- a prospective cohort study of 84 569 adults in the southeastern United States from 2002 to 2009, 52 117 of whom have Medicare or Medicaid claims. The study found that lower neighborhood socioeconomic context was associated with decreased CR participation independent of individual socioeconomic status. These data invite research on interventions to increase CR access in deprived communities.

Factors associated with epinephrine administration for anaphylaxis in children before arrival to the emergency department.
Researchers evaluated factors associated with anaphylaxis management before arrival at the emergency department (ED) or urgent care center (UCC). Reactions occurring at home were less likely to be treated with epinephrine compared with reactions occurring at school. The odds of receiving epinephrine before arrival at the ED or UCC were significantly lower with a 2-organ system or 3-organ system presentation compared with 1-organ system involvement.

Sex differences in lipid profiles and treatment utilization among young adults with acute myocardial infarction: results from the VIRGO study.
This study characterized sex differences in lipid profiles and treatment utilization among young adults with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Young women with AMI had slightly favorable lipid and lipoprotein profiles compared with men, suggesting that difference in lipid and lipoprotein may not be a major contributor to sex differences in outcomes after AMI.

Endocrine therapy initiation among Medicaid-insured breast cancer survivors with hormone receptor-positive tumors.
The researchers sought to characterize endocrine therapy (ET) use in a low-income Medicaid-insured population in North Carolina. They found that, of 222 women meeting the inclusion criteria, only 50 percent filled a prescription for ET. Results suggest substantial underutilization of ET in this population.

Increasing utilization and predictors of hematopoietic growth factors in patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer: findings from a large national population-based cohort in the USA, 1992-2009.
The authors examined the temporal trend and predictors of receiving hematopoietic growth factors in a large nationwide and population-based cohort of patients with colorectal cancer in the USA from 1992 to 2009. They found that gender, marital status, comorbidity scores, geographic area, year of diagnosis, tumor stage, number of lymph nodes, and risk profile for febrile neutropenia were statistically significant predictors of using colony-stimulating factors and erythropoiesis-stimulating agents.
