The frequency of PTSD and subthreshold PTSD among African-American women with depressive symptoms in a disadvantaged urban neighborhood: pilot study.
This report examined the frequency of a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis and subthreshold PTSD among 72 female participants with depressive symptoms in a mindfulness-based intervention for depression at an urban federally qualified health center. The authors reported the high frequency of PTSD diagnosis and subthreshold PTSD among underserved women with depressive symptoms.

Assessing the individual, neighborhood, and policy predictors of disparities in mental health care.
This study assessed individual- and area-level predictors of racial/ethnic disparities in mental health care episodes for adults with psychiatric illness. It found that racial/ethnic disparities arise because minorities are more likely to live in neighborhoods where treatment initiation is low, rather than because of a differential influence of neighborhood disadvantage on treatment initiation for minorities compared with whites.

Geographic variation in mental health care disparities among racially/ethnically diverse adults with psychiatric disorders.
The main purpose of this study is to examine geographic variation in unmet need for mental health care among racially/ethnically diverse adults with psychiatric disorders in the US. It found that Latinos in the South, Blacks and Latinos in the Midwest, and Latinos and Asians in the West had higher unmet need than non-Hispanic Whites, whereas no significant racial/ethnic effects were found in the Northeast.

Chronic physical illness burden and suicidal ideation among Dominicans in New York City.
This study used data from a community survey of 2753 Dominican adults in New York City to investigate the association between chronic illness and suicidal ideation. The investigators concluded that the association of interest did not differ significantly between younger and older adults. They suggest that screening for SI in health care practice, particularly among Dominican men with multiple chronic health conditions, may be warranted.

Panic attacks and panic disorder in the American Indian community.
The purpose of this study is to describe the epidemiology, clinical features, and comorbidities of panic attacks and panic disorder in two large American Indian tribes. It found that the prevalence and clinical features of panic attacks and panic disorder in American Indians were similar to epidemiologic studies with majority populations. However, in contrast to earlier research, panic symptoms were similar in both males and females, and different patterns of comorbidity emerged.

Association of depressive symptomology and psychological trauma with diabetes control among older American Indian women: does social support matter?
Among older American Indian women with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), the researchers examined the association between mental health and T2DM control and if social support modifies the association. They found that there was not a significant association between depressive symptomatology and higher HbA1c although increased depressive symptomatology was associated with higher HbA1c values among participants with low social support.

Examining psychotropic medication use among youth in the U.S. by race/ethnicity and psychological impairment.
This study examined racial/ethnic differences in the prescription of psychotropic medications among youth with and without psychological impairment. Compared to Black and Latino youth with psychological impairment, White youth were more likely to be prescribed psychotropic medications when impaired. Among youth never having psychological impairment, White youth were also more likely to be prescribed medications compared to their racial/ethnic minority counterparts.

Perceived discrimination in health care and mental health/substance abuse treatment among blacks, Latinos, and whites.
The researchers investigated whether perceived discrimination in mental health/substance abuse visits contributes to participants' ratings of treatment helpfulness and stopped treatment. They found that fifteen percent of California adults reported discrimination during a health care visit and 4% specifically during mental health/substance abuse visits. Latinos, the uninsured, and those with past year mental disorders were twice as likely as others to report health care discrimination.

Trends in racial-ethnic disparities in access to mental health care, 2004-2012.
This study compared trends in racial-ethnic disparities in mental health care access among whites, blacks, Hispanics, and Asians by using the Institute of Medicine definition of disparities as all differences except those due to clinical appropriateness, clinical need, and patient preferences. The investigators found that significant disparities were found in 2004-2005 and in 2011-2012 for all three racial-ethnic minority groups compared with whites in all three measures of access.
