Building stronger online communities through the creation of Facebook-integrated health applications.
Social media, such as Facebook, provides a powerful mechanism to connect individuals with similar diseases, but current platforms do not achieve their full potential to help patients communicate with one another or with the medical community. The authors of this viewpoint article believe that an opportunity exists for health care professionals to strengthen online communities by creating apps that use the Facebook platform or a programming interface. Development of such apps are discussed, with an eye toward the needs of the patient, parent, or caregiver as end-users and involving their input.

Legal, practical, and ethical considerations for making online patient portals accessible for all.
The authors argue that there are potential legal mandates for improving portal accessibility (e.g., the Civil Rights and the Rehabilitation Acts), as well as ethical considerations to prevent the exacerbation of existing health and health care disparities. To address these legal, practical, and ethical considerations, they present standards and broad recommendations that could greatly improve the reach and impact of portal Web sites.

Information needs of older women with early-stage breast cancer when making radiation therapy decisions.
The researchers identified the information older women with early-stage breast cancer need when making radiation therapy decisions, and who patients identify as the main decision maker. They found that older women consider themselves to be the main decision maker; they desire information and have more agency and input in the decision-making process than prior literature would suggest.

Leveraging EHRs for patient engagement: perspectives on tailored program outreach.
Electronic health records (EHRs) present healthcare delivery systems with scalable, cost-effective opportunities to promote lifestyle programs among patients at high risk for type 2 diabetes, yet little consensus exists on strategies to enhance patient engagement. In this study, the investigators explored patient perspectives on program outreach messages containing content tailored to EHR-derived diabetes risk factors--a theory-driven strategy to increase the persuasiveness of health communications.

Graphics help patients distinguish between urgent and non-urgent deviations in laboratory test results.
Most electronic health record systems provide laboratory test results to patients in table format. Researchers tested whether presenting such results in visual displays (number lines) could improve understanding. They found that visual displays reduced respondents' perceived urgency and desire to contact health care providers immediately for near-normal test results compared to tables but did not affect their perceptions of extreme values.

Utilizing a novel mobile health "selfie" application to improve compliance to iron chelation in pediatric patients receiving chronic transfusions.
Iron chelation therapy can prevent iron overload for pediatric patients with sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia major; however, adherence is suboptimal. Therefore, the researchers developed an intensive training program (ITP), to improve medication management and disease knowledge. The objectives were to determine feasibility of the ITP and its preliminary impact on adherence, disease knowledge, and health outcomes. The mobile ITP was feasibly implemented in a clinical setting.

Reference pricing changes the 'choice architecture' of health care for consumers.
This article summarizes reference pricing's impacts to date on patient choice, provider prices, surgical complications, and employer spending and estimates its potential impacts if expanded to more services and a broader population. Reference pricing induces consumers to select lower-price alternatives for all of the forms of care studied, leading to significant reductions in prices paid and spending incurred by insurers and employers.
