Accessibility and feasibility of using technology to support mindfulness practice, reduce stress and promote long term mental health.
In this study the investigators evaluated the feasibility of using an activity monitor to support mindfulness practice, reduce self-reported stress and physiological indicators of stress. They found that there were no significant changes in self-reported stress, depression, post-traumatic stress and mindfulness from baseline to eight-weeks; pulse pressure and standard deviation of pulse pressure increased over time; and those who were high on the non-judge mindfulness subscale had a lower standard deviation pulse pressure and spent less time stressed.

The impact of an adolescent depressive disorders clinical pathway on healthcare utilization.
The purpose of this study was to examine the association between level of adherence to an adolescent depressive disorders inpatient clinical pathway with psychiatric patients’ length of stay (LOS), cost, and readmissions. Patients in the high-adherence category were found to have significantly longer LOS and higher costs when compared to those in the low-adherence category. The authors conclude that understanding which of the care processes within the pathway are most cost-effective for improving patient-centered outcomes requires further investigation.

Acceptability of group visits for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in pediatric clinics.
The objective of the study was to describe the acceptability of ADHD group visits in busy pediatric clinics based on caregivers, child participants and facilitators. The authors found that the majority of comments from families and facilitators highlighted a variety of benefits of the use of a group visit model for ADHD chronic care. Despite systems-level barriers to implementation, families and facilitators felt the benefits outweighed the challenges.

Patient engagement in ACO practices and patient-reported outcomes among adults with co-occurring chronic disease and mental health conditions.
The purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which practices with patient-centered cultures, greater shared decision-making strategies, and better coordination among team members have better patient-reported outcomes for patients with diabetes and/or cardiovascular and comorbid mental health diagnoses. The study concluded that Accountable Care Organization patients with comorbid physical and mental health diagnoses report better physical functioning when practices have patient-centered cultures.

Psychosocial co-morbidities in Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS): a systematic review.
Psychosocial factors amplify symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis (IC/BPS). While psychosocial self-management is efficacious in other pain conditions, its impact on an IC/BPS population has rarely been studied. The objective of this review was to learn the prevalence and impact of psychosocial factors on IC/BPS, assess baseline psychosocial characteristics, and offer recommendations for assessment and treatment.

Identifying moderators of response to the Penn Resiliency Program: a synthesis study.
Researchers sought to identify moderators of a cognitive-behavioral depression prevention program's effect on depressive symptoms among youth in early adolescence. Data from three randomized controlled trials of the Penn Resiliency Program (PRP) were aggregated to maximize statistical power and sample diversity. The primary analyses suggested that PRP's effects are limited to youth whose parents are unmarried.

Mental health service utilization is associated with retention in care among persons living with HIV at a university-affiliated HIV clinic.
The researchers sought to determine if mental health (MH) service utilization would be associated with improved retention in care for patients with HIV and MH comorbidities. They concluded that even in the absence of documented MH comorbidities, improved retention in care was observed with increasing MH service utilization.

Proxy and patient reports of health-related quality of life in a national cancer survey.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the difference between patient and proxy reports of patient HRQOL in a large national cancer survey, and determine if this difference could be mitigated by adjusting for clinical and sociodemographic information about patients. It concluded that the proxy-reported outcome scores for both physical and mental health were clinically and significantly lower than patient-reported scores for these outcomes.

Sleep disturbance may impact treatment outcome in bipolar disorder: a preliminary investigation in the context of a large comparative effectiveness trial.
The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential impact of poor sleep at baseline on outcomes in a randomized effectiveness trial of quetiapine and lithium. Sixty-three percent of patients had baseline sleep disturbance. Individuals with sleep disturbance had worse bipolar illness severity, greater severity of depression, mania, anxiety, irritability, and psychosis, were less likely to have sustained response, and had more necessary clinical adjustments.
