A scoping review of paediatric latent tuberculosis infection care cascades: initial steps are lacking.
This literature review looked at current studies on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric latent tuberculosis infection (TB infection), commonly known as the TB infection care cascade. The authors conducted a systematic search of several medical databases and included articles and meeting abstracts that studied children and adolescents 21 years or younger who were screened for or diagnosed with TB infection. They identified 146 studies examining steps in the pediatric TB infection care cascade, including 31 in children living in low- and middle-income countries. Most literature described the final cascade step, which is treatment initiation to completion. Strengths and gaps were identified and future research in examining cascade steps upstream of treatment initiation was recommended.

Inpatient versus outpatient management of negative pressure wound therapy in pediatric patients.
Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is commonly used to manage complex wounds in the pediatric population. With recently developed portable NPWT devices, providers have the opportunity to transition NPWT to the outpatient setting. However, there are no studies describing outpatient NPWT in pediatric patients. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to leverage a population-level analysis to advance current knowledge about outpatient NPWT use in pediatric patients.

Evaluating surveillance patterns after chemoradiation-only compared with conventional management for older patients with rectal cancer.
This study examined surveillance patterns for elderly patients who were treated only with chemoradiation (CR) as opposed to traditional treatment (chemoradiation and protectomy). In the cohort study, a total of 2,482 individuals met the inclusion criteria, with 21% receiving CR-only treatment, and 79% had conventional treatment. In comparison to patients who had traditional treatment, patients with CR-only treatment had far less follow-up during the first 2 years post-treatment. Adherence to guideline-recommended surveillance was poor for all Medicare patients, but especially for CR-only treated patients.

The contemporary appendectomy for acute uncomplicated appendicitis in adults.
Epidemiologic data related to the surgical management of appendicitis are out of date. In this study, the authors contemplated the role of nonoperative therapy in uncomplicated appendicitis and developed a contemporary profile of the risks and benefits of operative appendectomy by merging the 2016 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program essential and appendectomy-targeted participant use files.

Use of medical, surgical and complementary treatments among women with fibroids.
This study examined the use of medical management, uterus-preserving surgery, and complementary treatments among women with uterine fibroids. It found that uterus-preserving fibroid surgery is effective, but many symptomatic women can be successfully treated with nonsurgical management, including complementary and alternative therapy.

Management of persistent pain in the older patient: a clinical review.
The purpose of this study was to 1.) Describe barriers to the management of persistent pain among older adults; 2.) Summarize current management approaches, including pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic modalities; 3.) Present rehabilitative approaches; and 4.) Highlight aspects of the patient-physician relationship that can help to improve treatment outcomes.
