Telehealth use and perceptions among prostate cancer survivors.
Researchers surveyed a sociodemographically diverse population-based cohort of prostate cancer survivors about their usage and perceptions of telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic. While less than a third of survivors used telehealth at the time of survey and only 10% thought telehealth care was comparable an in-person visit, more than half felt telehealth was a good option for initial consultations or basic care. Survivors with lower education had marginally lower use of telehealth. The researchers concluded that differences in survivor perceptions of telehealth by education level highlighted underlying disparities in telehealth use and offered potential targets for interventions.

Use of electronic communication with clinicians among cancer survivors: Health Information National Trend Survey in 2019 and 2020.
This study’s objective was to describe cancer survivors' use of electronic communication (e-communication) with clinicians and identify factors associated with their use, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors conducted a secondary analysis of cancer survivors (N = 1,482) from the combined Health Information National Trends Survey HINTS 5 Cycle 3 and Cycle 4. Survivors' use of e-communication was defined by at least one of four e-communication use behaviors in the previous 12 months. Cancer survivors had a 64% prevalence of e-communication use, with older adults (≥65 years old) were less likely to use e-communication. Survivors who were white, living in a metro area, diagnosed with breast cancer, seeking cancer-related information previously, or having a regular health care provider were more likely to use e-communication. The start of the COVID-19 pandemic was marginally associated with the increased e-communication use when other variables were controlled.

Inequity in telemedicine use among patients with cancer in the Deep South during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The authors’ goal was to characterize telemedicine use among a large oncology population in the Deep South during the COVID-19 pandemic. They found that telemedicine use, specifically with video, was significantly lower among historically vulnerable populations. They concluded that understanding barriers to telemedicine use and preferred modalities of communication among different populations will help inform insurance reimbursement and interventions at different socioecological levels to ensure that the continued evolution of telemedicine will be equitable.

An early palliative care telehealth coaching intervention to enhance advanced cancer family caregivers' decision support skills: the CASCADE pilot factorial trial.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of the modules of a telehealth palliative care decision support training program (CASCADE training- CAre Supporters Coached to be Adept DEcision Partners) for caregivers of cancer patients. The researchers conducted a pilot trial between October 2019 and October 2020 in which 46 dyads of newly diagnosed cancer patients and their caregivers were randomized and assigned to one of eight experimental conditions. Each experimental condition included a combination of one of three CASCADE modules. Measures of decision support and caregiver and patient distress, training feasibility, and training acceptability were collected. The study found that the individual CASCADE modules were reported to have a possible benefit for decision support and caregiver distress, and that the average caregiver rating for recommending the program was 9.9 on a scale of 1(Not at all likely) to 10 (Extremely likely). The study concluded that the pilot trial was a success and justify and warrant a full-scale trial.

Symptom and needs assessment screening in oncology patients: alternate outreach methods during COVID-19.
This initiative’s goal was to develop alternate outreach methods to cancer patients without access to an electronic portal during COVID-19. The authors implemented a standardized telephone outreach process targeting patients without active electronic portal accounts to improve remote symptom monitoring. A total of 172 screens were completed, identifying 110 needs for 63 individuals. Twenty-eight patients completed patient enrollment, with outreach calls capturing a higher percentage of Black patients (34%) and older adults age 61-80 years old (69%) compared to portal users.

The increasing value of eHealth in the delivery of patient-centred cancer care.
This paper is an appraisal of peer literature over the past 10 years on patient-centered eHealth to improve cancer care delivery. Uses of eHealth include the addressal of symptom management, health-related quality of life, and other patient-reported outcomes across cancer care. Challenges of, and opportunities for accessibility, scalability, and implementation of these technologies is also discussed.

eHealth activity among African American and white cancer survivors: a new application of theory.
eHealth is a promising resource for cancer survivors and may contribute to reducing racial disparities in cancer survivorship. This research applied the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) to examine eHealth activity among African American (AfAm) and White cancer survivors.

eHealth and mHealth interventions in pediatric cancer: a systematic review of interventions across the cancer continuum.
The primary objectives of this study were to (a) identify current published research in electronic health (eHealth) and mobile health (mHealth) interventions for youth undergoing cancer treatment and child, adolescent, and young adult survivors of childhood cancer and (b) critically appraise the current scientific evidence on their effectiveness and efficacy. As an exploratory aim, the investigators identified pediatric cancer patients' and survivors' perceptions, attitudes, and concerns related to eHealth and mHealth interventions.

Reducing symptom distress in patients with advanced cancer using an e-alert system for caregivers: Pooled analysis of two randomized clinical trials.
The aim of this paper was to assess the effects on cancer patient symptom distress of an eHealth system that alerts clinicians to significant changes in the patient's symptoms, as reported by a family caregiver. It found that when severe caregiver-reported symptoms were shared with clinicians, the symptoms were more likely to be subsequently reported as improved than when the symptoms were not shared with clinicians.

Feasibility of a telehealth educational program on self-management of pain and fatigue in adult cancer patients.
The primary objective was to assess the feasibility of a telehealth pain and fatigue self-management program among adult cancer patients. The program did not meet feasibility requirements because of only 34% of eligible patients choosing to participate. However, 50 percent of patients starting the program graduated. Differences in baseline characteristics and retention rates were noted by recruitment strategy.

Development testing of mobile health interventions for cancer patient self-management: a review.
The purpose of the current study was to conduct a review of published articles that describe the development process of mobile health interventions for patients’ cancer care self-management. The following trends emerged: importance of stakeholder engagement during the development process, addressing the unique needs and experiences of cancer patients and care providers, ensuring user satisfaction with the system, and identifying perceived benefits and limitations of the system.
